When I was little, my favourite character was Rupert Bear because he always had so many magical adventures. Who was your favourite character and why?

Milly Molly Mandy! When I was seven, my dad took me to join the local library. Only one book at a time was allowed in those days. I chose Milly Molly Mandy, which was new to me. I took it home, read it all then rushed back to the library to get another book out as I thought getting books to read was wonderful. What a disappointment it was to be told that they didn’t allow a return the same day! Anne of Green Gables came a little bit later, and was a great favourite. I still have my mother’s school prize copy which she received in 1939.

Drina Adams - the Drina books weren’t published until I was in my late teens, but I love stories about ballet, being a failed ballet dancer myself, so I read them avidly even though I wasn’t the intended audience. In many ways she was brought up the same way I was - the same behaviour was expected of me. So I identified with her a bit - well, apart from the fact that she was very talented and very well off!

Arrietty in the Borrowers was a favourite of mine, as well as George in the famous five.

I loved Heidi too, so much so that on a recent trip to Switzerland I made a point of visiting Heidiland, which I loved

I didn’t have any favourites. Read Hans Andersen fairy tales, Brothers Grim tales, Alice in Wonderland, Arabian Nights etc
My son who is 75 liked Rupert the Bear and when I was clearing out I found a Rupert annual. He was really excited to get it again.

I never really read children's books apart from Alice in Wonderland, I read all the Agatha Christie novels and liked characters like Poirot.

Another vote for George (Georgina) from the Famous Five. I even persuaded my mother to ask the hairdresser to cut my hair short like George's hair. It looked awful and I was relieved when it grew again to its previous length.

Milly Molly Mandy when I was very young. I loved her cosy life and her pink stripey dress

Not a specific character but I loved all of the Mallory Towers, St Clare's, Naughtiest Girl books. All the girls seemed to behaving a spiffing time.

Yes, I loved MMM too, I always wanted to live in the "nice white cottage with the thatched roof "! With that doting family, and Little Friend Susan, and Billy Blunt.
