My very first thread on gn was ages ago and...

I thought it might be fun to revisit it.

My least favourite sister in law (now ex!) was about to visit and I was musing about my need to do things properly.

I am quite a confident person so I was bewildered why I should be so worried about the impression I made.

I was roundly told off by Greatnan for being bothered and bringing such irrelevance to the forum.

There are still some people who make me feel the same. Are there people in your life who have that effect?

Grannyme6 Wed 21-Jun-23 23:33:03

I’ve never started a thread, more a reader than a poster.
Good to see Urms’s post and I send my good wishes. Like many others, she is often in my thoughts. 💐

Gundy Thu 22-Jun-23 00:16:20

Iam64 I did not say anything about Greatnan - I don’t even know who she is… was. May she RIP.

My comment was based on the first couple of pages of comments that posters made about her. Apparently she scared a lot of people. That’s all. So I apologize if I upset you. It’s nice that you came to her defense.

Didn't we have some good parties in the early days?

Why did they stop. I suppose it was lockdown!! grin

I first posted in 2013 having been recruited as a Gransnet Local editor. This short lived GN spinoff gave me lots of opportunities, such as being one of the makeup models that annoyingly pop up while you're browsing threads.

I have met some of you at meetups from Norwich to Edinburgh.
I really miss the book club and other competitions.

downtoearth Thu 22-Jun-23 07:56:01

I rememember our Norwich meet up Pittcity, was a lovely day.
And your pop up looks really good, you looked the same in real life, havent seen Norfolk Dumpling around here lately or her friend Gma.

Grundy, I find your comments about Greatnan unnecessary. This is an interesting , fairly light thread. Greatnan had a very successful career in the uk. I’ve no reason to believe she wouldn’t have been equally successful in the USA or other parts of Europe
Her death was untimely, distressing for her family, and many of us.

Hear, hear. That’s the danger of extrapolating from the comments of some people who did not know Greatnan at all. It turns into a sort of Chinese Whispers character assassination.
And is particularly hurtful when the subject died in such tragic circumstances. Nil nisi bonum

Phoenix is another late member I miss for her SOH, but also sense of fairness and personal courage. If any of our newer members want to look for “Cursing the gammon” it gives you an idea of how much fun GN was back in the day.
(I also recommend looking up the Argy).

Marydoll Thu 22-Jun-23 08:08:11

I was one of the founding members of the Argy, way back in the day. I used to have tears rolling down my face at some of the antics. Big Jim , a stalwart of the café, was a nod to my DH.
GN was more fun in those days.

Nfkdumpling pops up now and again on the Lockdown Gang thread. She is another with a poorly DH.
I am no longer blonde but au naturel.

I miss the Q&As with various celebs. We had some fairly big names on here. Des O’Connor was my favourite. When I asked him if he really was the support act for Buddy Holly when he toured the UK he quipped, ‘No, that was my Dad!’ 😂.

HQ weren’t so heavy handed in those days and would often join in the chats. It was very rare for somebody to be banned. There were some right old ding-dongs and some threads looked like battlefields with so many deleted posts but we weren’t treated like children or residents of a care home!

DanniRae Thu 22-Jun-23 08:25:30

I have been on here since 2015 ....... and I remember some really fun threads. The virtual parties ...... having fun describing what we were going to wear, the more outlandish the better. Choosing crazy, virtual sports for a forthcoming Olympics.

I have reread this thread and it all sounds a bit feeble but it really was great fun at the time!

I have started a few threads ..... some more successful that others. I think my most successful ..... and I have started it 3 times through the years.... was "I have never....." I would then put about 3 everyday things I had never done.
Again this sounds very feeble but it always led to some interesting admissions!! grin

I remember the GN conference held at the Overseas club in Edinburgh. Elegant and Baggs had us all extracting the DNA of strawberries! I still use my GN biros from the party bag given out that day. It wasn't the first conference either.

I do agree. There were more gentle reprimands in those days,

HQ used to pop into the Argy and I remember them commenting on a thread I started about my dodgy eyebrow dyeing.
The Argy customers invaded the sedate Kitchen and Soop took it all in good part, even visiting the Argy to join in the fun.

Charleygirl5 Thu 22-Jun-23 08:40:48

Oh yes, I remember only too well being banned with around 4 others and we became part of the Doghouse. I cannot remember why we were banned but it was probably;y somebody being high-handed.

this was during Covid, I live on my own so it did little to help my mental health.

It was lovely when GNHQ added their tuppence to a subject that interested them.

Phoenix was a really lovely person, had a hard life and died too young. The curse of the gammon is classic-she was an extremely good writer and I also miss her.

kittylester Thu 22-Jun-23 08:43:55

I would also refer you to her curse aimed at our Idiot.

A fair few of us bonded over having Idiots in our lives. Ours has taken the hump and disappeared!!!

I missed urms post yesterday, but if you are still looking hugs and love ug

kitty I think I’ve contributed to GN for about 4 or 5 years. Not entirely sure. One of my earliest threads was asking everyone how old they were. I recall the thread literally ‘took off’. There were hundreds of replies in no time at all. Marydoll you were thinking of putting the information on a spreadsheet but with so much information it became overwhelming - even for your I.T. savvy - so you abandoned the idea. Crikey, I didn’t blame you!

As for your question kitty no I don’t do ‘impressing people’.

Just as well really ...

Here it is WWM2

What’s The Doghouse, Charleygirl?

Aveline Thu 22-Jun-23 09:39:00

I remember lobbying for your reinstatement Charleygirl. I forget what it was all about but I was outraged at your being banned.

Marydoll Thu 22-Jun-23 10:22:11

The Doghouse Four were people who had all been banned at the same time, all very unnecessary, one of whom was the late, much loved Phoenix.

I remember well, it was very unfair (and you were vindicated in the end too!!).

Phoenix is very much missed with her quirky sense of humour.

In fact, the lovely staff who were at GNHQ in the olden days used to pop in for cake quite often 🎂

Where's lemongrove too, she is missed.

However, the Admiral is busy on shore these days 😂

Did Lemon not change her name?

As for the Admiral, I do have a penchant for uniforms, with lots of braid. wink. He was a rascal, to put it mildly.

Has your Idiot gone kitty? We've still got ours well on his way to becoming an alcoholic.

kittylester Thu 22-Jun-23 12:23:16

Sorry about yours, Bertha.

Ours took the hump!! Cutting off your nose to spite your face springs to mind. Idiot indeed!!!!.
