I thought it might be fun to revisit it.

My least favourite sister in law (now ex!) was about to visit and I was musing about my need to do things properly.

I am quite a confident person so I was bewildered why I should be so worried about the impression I made.

I was roundly told off by Greatnan for being bothered and bringing such irrelevance to the forum.

There are still some people who make me feel the same. Are there people in your life who have that effect?

I’m a relative newcomer to Gransnet - about a year. I’m also an interloper being from the USA. I love GN, so many different perspectives and personalities. I learn from everyone.

By now I think the regulars kind of know who I am, where I’m coming from. Some have even taken a bite out of me. Go for it, I say, I don’t take things personally. If someone has a really strong reaction to what I post - it’s not my problem, it’s theirs.

And vise versa. I really try to respect that everyone has their own philosophy and viewpoints. Greatnan was before my time here, but from what was said about her, I can only say - I’ve had people like that work for me in my last job. They didn’t last long.

Love you all 😍 - even the cranks 😂

kitty I think I’ve contributed to GN for about 4 or 5 years. Not entirely sure. One of my earliest threads was asking everyone how old they were. I recall the thread literally ‘took off’. There were hundreds of replies in no time at all. Marydoll you were thinking of putting the information on a spreadsheet but with so much information it became overwhelming - even for your I.T. savvy - so you abandoned the idea. Crikey, I didn’t blame you!

As for your question kitty no I don’t do ‘impressing people’.

Just as well really ...

How lovely to see you posting Urms. In my prayers every night. 💐

Thank you GSM. Very much appreciated, truly.

Just ‘as and when’ really re my posting. x

I'm sure there's huge support for you and your family on GN, Urmstongran.
You were kind to me when I arrived on the scene, I thought you had been around for ages! Not much longer than me. X

I can't remember what my first post was, I was pretty much on GN since its inception, way back in 2011 I think? I'd been on MN before that, mostly for the book threads, that's where I'm usually found grin I think it was suggested that maybe the oldies might like to shift themselves over to the new sister site GN and stop cluttering up MN , something like that, but a bit more diplomatic. I was actually a quite youngish mid 50 something, a veritable youngster back then, although I had become a new first time grandma around that time, so I thought I'd give it a go, it did seem altogether more restrained that MN, which is a bit like the wild west in comparison, although I'd say there have been the occasional "shoot outs" on GN too.

I do remember some of the legendary posters like Greatnan and Jing who both could be a bit scary at times but I was sorry to hear of their deaths particularly GN whose accidental fall in the mountains she loved where she loved to walk killed her, I think that left many of us reeling.

Lovely to see you posting again Urmstongran, I think many of us enjoy your up beat posts and great sense of humour flowers sorry to hear of the worrying time you have had lately.

Love urms.

Grundy, I find your comments about Greatnan unnecessary. This is an interesting , fairly light thread. Greatnan had a very successful career in the uk. I’ve no reason to believe she wouldn’t have been equally successful in the USA or other parts of Europe
Her death was untimely, distressing for her family, and many of us.

Marydoll Wed 21-Jun-23 19:39:47

I agree, Iam. Absolutely no need for the comment about Greatnan.
As my mum would say: If you have nothing nice to say about someone, say nothing..

My first post was in the summer of 2012 on a thread about a Glasgow meet up. I was invited along and had a smashing day out. I do believe it may have been the first ever Gransnet meet up.

I’m happy to say that I’m still friends with one of those lovely women.

Whitewavemark2

My first posting was on the virtual Halloween party at Glastonbury. I took my dog and supplied the lamb for the barbecue. 2011 I think.

I can remember everyone that has been mentioned. Sad to lose some of them😢

That sounds fun Whitewave! I probably missed that one

We need a few more threads like that 😁🎶🎶🎶🎶

We all used to be norty quite a lot on GN, not just in the Maffs Class.

Yes, I found Charleygirl really scary, always imagined her like Hattie Jacques's character, the matron wink

I'm sure she's lovely in real life 😁

Treetops05 Wed 21-Jun-23 21:02:56

Yes, when one of my older sister visits! Her home is picture perfect, a few choice pieces, many charity shop finds, beautifully decorated. My home ...isn't! I have far too much furniture, mostly inherited and differing styles, finishes etc and a very hairy dog. Add to this a slight hoarder husband and my love of books it is never clean and tidy like hers. I start 3-4 weeks prior trying to get ready.

She's always lovely, says she likes to stay to look after our dog (when we went away pre Covid) because she feels she doesnt need to clean or tidy as 'I don't care'. The problem I hide is that I do care - but having been married almost 40 years I lost the urge to fight the chaos...

I just can't get my head around why anybody would be upset about what a complete stranger on a forum said. It's not real life, just fun - so it doesn't matter.

Not being a social media expert, I joined for chat and friendship and was shocked that anyone could make such rude comments to people who posted in good faith.

I get that now!!

Charleygirl5 Wed 21-Jun-23 21:49:29

I have had my grammar and spelling corrected at different times -neither of which went down a treat. I was edyercated at a convent, the nuns did try and maybe there are some gaps.

TerriBull Wed 21-Jun-23 22:04:29

Does anyone remember Frank, I think that was his name and his dog Andy? I always wondered what happened to him.

farview Wed 21-Jun-23 22:05:21

I vaguely remember my first post..on Relationships...I also very much remember a very hurtful 'snipe' .....re my writing style......which remains the same I may add....I dont post much but do read the good morning thread....and worry, think....about everyone on there....albeit, sometimes wonder if new posters dont feel welcomed enough to continue posting...
Lovely to see urms post on here....💕
