Yes, thanks. I started the photo thread under my previous name because I love photography and nature. It was timely because we couldn't go far in covid times, and I think we reached 1000 + another 1000 posts.
I did laugh when even the Strictly thread briefly ran into an full blown argument!

My very first thread on gn was ages ago and...
(225 Posts)I thought it might be fun to revisit it.
My least favourite sister in law (now ex!) was about to visit and I was musing about my need to do things properly.
I am quite a confident person so I was bewildered why I should be so worried about the impression I made.
I was roundly told off by Greatnan for being bothered and bringing such irrelevance to the forum.
There are still some people who make me feel the same. Are there people in your life who have that effect?
I agree with Aveline- I also joined to sort out some practical problems I had and I stayed well clear of the political threads.
I have had my head bitten off on the most innocuous threads, present day as well as many years ago.
I know I have helped people with my professional expertise but I still got my head bitten off questioning me about something.
I joined in 2014 I think, more of an observer for some time. Cannot remember when I first started posting but it was certainly not on the News & Politics threads, they seemed far to argument prone. I too remember some that have been mentioned, sad they are not longer with us.

^If you appear to be friendly with some posters, you can be classed as part of a clique^
If you stick up for someone who's having hard time unfairly, then you're accused of being in a coven!

The thing is, as readers, one can only go on what posters say - and how they phrase it. How one presents oneself inevitably leads to people judging you as a person, or as part of a group. We judge people in the news, celebrities, etc by their words and their actions, their body language, etc. Online, we can only build up an idea of others by their words and their manner.

But, that’s rather the opposite of what I was saying - we can’t have preconceptions about other posters if we don’t know them, or even see a picture of the,. We can only go on what they say, and how they come across. Some posters are fairly constantly argumentative, some challenging, some infuriating, etc.

We can be whoever or whatever we want to be 😁
Today I am a dinosaur - tomorrow, who knows?
Who I am on GN, is who I am in real life as I hope the Glesca Grannies will confirm.
However, I quite fancy having an alter ego. 😉
The problem is that some things I hear about on GN aren’t things that come under discussion with anyone anywhere else. E.g. I don’t discuss how often I shower or with what with anyone off line.
So who I am on GN is what we discuss on here, but may not be reflected elsewhere. At the moment, I’m identifying as a sloth and hardly moving at all.
What I am trying to say is that I don't pretend to be someone I'm not.
I try my best to be kind and helpful and not upset anyone. However, I hate injustice and bullying and will call it out.
I don't always get it right, like everyone else I have weaknesses (many) and make mistakes, but am upfront at admitting when I get it wrong.
I frequently rabbit on and am aware I can irritate people and also know that I am disliked by some, we can't expect to be liked by everyone..
I get ratty at some posters and am not good at hiding it. What you see read is who I am.
A few years ago, we had what I would call keyboard warriors. I was convinced that in real life, they wouldn't say boo to a good.
It's so easy to hide behind anonymity.
I frequently rabbit on and am aware I can irritate people you and me both then Marydoll, and loads of others too! But I don't think there is any harm or spite there.

I hope not!
You seem very pleasant to me Marydoll tho that doesn’t mean I agree with all your posts, I sometimes agree with what a poster has said in a thread even when I don’t think they come over as pleasant and vice versa ( sp?) We can’t worry about how we’re seen on forums just put what we really feel and if others don’t like it then tough.
Ok I am coming clean ....... I am really a gorgeous super model. I am a granny but beautiful with it. I can fly a plane and speak 6 languages. Yep that's me or is it?
I guessed that Danni.
Got me thinking- what are we really like outside of these posts ? You can’t really tell, can you. Maybe those annoying feisty posters are actually quite pleasant and a big laugh in real life. Maybe they are meek and mild ,butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths , just keyboard warriors?
Oh I knew I wouldn't be able to fool you kittylester! When are you going to come clean about your real life? Don't worry I'm not going to spill the beans about it all!!
Or they could be pedantic know it alls who you would not want to pass the time of day with

They do tend to disappear after a while. Perhaps they wear themselves out ? Or return as another persona.
I made my first post when needing a bit of support after I'd been very unfairly treated by someone I had been close to. I got torn down by a number of posters, one after the other piled in, echoing each other. It was obvious most had not read my post properly anyway.
It went on for pages and I couldn't believe the vitriol towards me from strangers. I have remembered most of the names and noted how they have treated others since. Some rude and unkind posters on here.
But there were some who read the post properly and were kind and empathetic, giving advice and who understood [they'd read the post properly too] I have noted those usernames too, Also note how their responses to others have been understanding and thoughtful.
I went downhill quickly that day. probably my fault for coming on whilst at a low ebb. Mods deleted the thread though and I've changed my username since.
I've never had that sort of problem anywhere else on the web where others have their own opinions and thoughts but here, and find it interesting that so many others have been shot down in flames too.
Like Pittcity I was a local editor for Gransnet back in the day and tested some horrible smelling bath cleaner at some stage. The exciting bit was going on BBC Radio Leicester a few times and having really enjoyable interviews with the presenter about all things Gransnet encouraging people to join. I would only recommend it now with a big 'Caution' label on it. A level of resilience is required to contribute to many more of the threads now I feel.
Hi ladies I am flying to faro Portugal in September with my husband can anyone suggest a lovely place/hotel to stay. Also any activities places to visit we could do. Not Albuferia.
I like that Callistemon 🧹 😅
My very first post was about 9 years ago. Fairly innocuous but I got shot down in flames and took it badly. I do “get” GN now (I’ve never seen MN). My assailant is still around but I’ve moved on and I do enjoy GN on the whole.
Speaking of missing people, where has Chewbacca gone? I do miss her.
