My very first thread on gn was ages ago and...

I thought it might be fun to revisit it.

My least favourite sister in law (now ex!) was about to visit and I was musing about my need to do things properly.

I am quite a confident person so I was bewildered why I should be so worried about the impression I made.

I was roundly told off by Greatnan for being bothered and bringing such irrelevance to the forum.

There are still some people who make me feel the same. Are there people in your life who have that effect?

Charleygirl , I can hardly believe you were accused of poor spelling and grammar! That doesn’t sound like you at all. Maybe they had just picked up on a typo but surely that would have been obvious. I do find personal criticisms very rude.

Doodledog Fri 23-Jun-23 12:00:01

Speaking of missing people, where has Chewbacca gone? I do miss her.
I miss her too. She left after a particularly spiteful incident which involved both MN and GN, as did a few others, I believe. I suspect that the perpetrators intended to get rid of people they didn't like, and it is a shame that they were allowed to get away with it. It is also a shame that Chewy no longer posts, and I would very much like to see her return.

Like others have said, my first posts on here were very rudely pounced on. I have been on many discussion boards before though, so didn't let it put me off grin. I don't really know why it works like that, but it does seem to happen that new people get a hard time on here - maybe it's a territorial thing?

Another who has vanished is Galen. I know she was never very well and her mobility was poor but I thought her brain was in good working order.

*We can be whoever or whatever we want to be 😁

Today I am a dinosaur - tomorrow, who knows?*

Hello there Callistemon. 🦕. Oh no, sorry, that was yesterday.

Francisann

Hi ladies I am flying to faro Portugal in September with my husband can anyone suggest a lovely place/hotel to stay. Also any activities places to visit we could do. Not Albuferia.

Please start a new thread to ask your question Francisaan as you won't get answers on this one as it is on another subject.

(Hope you are a new poster, if so welcome. If you are a veteran just being cheeky 🤣)

I started with GN back in 2019 and haven’t started my own thread yet. I was pounced upon by a poster when I added my thoughts on a general election discussion and one poster in particular pounced upon what I’d said - they were angry that I didn’t provide facts, figures and a powerpoint presentation to back up what I’d said.

It really shocked me. I also remember the name and they are still on here.

However, one particular poster who is also still on here was very kind to me. I’ve not forgotten either of them, for different reasons.

Staceyann Fri 23-Jun-23 15:16:46

Interesting, Shelmiss - I wonder if the two posters you mention are like that in real life?

I was thinking about Galen the other day and wondering how she was. Does anyone know?

Today I identified as Little Miss Forgetful Bellanonna 😂

I wish Chewbacca would return to GN too

I was thinking of contacting her.

Good idea, Marydoll

Chewbacca was always interesting and thiughtful. She left, as Doodledog says, after a particularly spiteful incident. Like many of us she had become dissatisfied with GN and finally decided to go. Like others mentioned here, much missed.
Phoenix was a lovely person with a great sense of humour

I was pounced on after commenting on an estrangement thread, soon after I joined. It’s a pity being criticised or disagreed with on GN seems to put some people off.

merlotgran Fri 23-Jun-23 21:39:04

Iam, Did you used to be WhenI’m64 back in the day and then had a birthday? Or were there two of you?😂

I’ve often wondered because When suddenly disappeared.

Bellanonna Fri 23-Jun-23 22:09:00

Marydoll, see if you can persuade Chewy to come back. A lot of us obviously miss her.

I think WhenI'm64 was a different poster, but not sure.

merlotgran Fri 23-Jun-23 22:39:00

I should have asked ages ago then I wouldn’t have spent nearly a decade wondering. 😂

Callistemon21 Fri 23-Jun-23 22:50:01

Someone on here will know 🙂

nanna8 Sat 24-Jun-23 04:43:33

Yes chewbacca is missed, she was a good poster. Hope she reads this and considers a return. We could have a welcome home party ?

harrigran Sat 24-Jun-23 05:25:17

I have been on GN from the very beginning but started very few threads.
In the past we had a few posters who came across as holier than thou but I just avoided the threads that they vented on.
I had great support when I got my diagnosis and all the way through my treatment.
When DH got his diagnosis and throughout his four years of treatment and his death I always felt as if I had friends around me.
There are quite a few of the 'old girls' missing now but some of them are FB friends too.

Marydoll Sat 24-Jun-23 06:54:48

Chewy had her reasons for leaving, there was a lot happening in her life and also quite a bit of unpleasantness on GN.
Sometimes, I think posters don't think of the effects of their behaviour on others.
I do miss her.

Nana, I'm unsure if she even reads GN now.

Joseann Sat 24-Jun-23 07:17:03

I agree. Many people can't cope with this and leave, or some just can't be bothered and decide it isn't worth the effort.
Maybe the Remainers (on GN!) are the ones who stick to their guns, are made of stronger stuff, or who, like me, feel that there are more good "friends" around than the few nasty ones?

Marydoll Sat 24-Jun-23 07:39:10

I concur, Joseann.

I have made some good friends on GN , but am not good at keeping contact, then people think they have offended me.
It's not that I don't care, but my failing health often gets in the way of things. Note to self: I must make a bigger effort.

Iam64 Sat 24-Jun-23 08:11:08

merlotgran , WhenIm64 was a different poster. I joined 10 years ago just after my 64th birthday. I couldn’t quite believe I’d hit 64, could hear the Beatles singing and decided on iam64. I’ve considered changing it as I’ve got (fortunately) even older but decided to stay with it

Talking about Chewbacca, lemon, Phoenix, Greatnan, jingles and others who either no longer post or have died reminds me how many cyber friends I’ve met here. Callistemon’s comments about cliques and covens hit the spot. I’m in the leftie group of posters but have friends on here who sit the other side of the fence. Humanity humour humility add to the joys in life

Me too, in ‘real life’ and online. I don’t think that friends have to agree about everything, and I definitely don’t think that just because someone has a ‘left wing’ point of view about one thing they are letting the side down if they don’t on another. People (well most of us!) are far more complex than that. I also think that it’s not always their political beliefs that attract me to someone (or otherwise) - it is the way they want to see them enacted. I have ‘decent’ and kindly Tory friends and I know some doctrinaire lefties who show no understanding of human nature and cannot conceive of the idea that they might just possibly be wrong. I might share the basic views of the latter group but prefer the company of the former.

Charleygirl5 Sat 24-Jun-23 08:45:18

Phoenix Greatnan and Jingles are sadly dead. There really does not need to be so much nastiness. I just withdraw, licking my wounds nowadays.

As I have said previously I have met quite a few in RL and got on very well with them and these are people for whatever reason I would not meet in RL normally.
