The coolest room in the house

I’ve just realised it’s the bathroom in our house.

Off to see if I can fit my garden easy chair for a good read!

There is no cool room !

In the Winter , this house is delightfully cosy , but in the Summer it is unbearable .

My bedroom. In fact all of the downstairs room in my ‘upside down’ house. My bedroom is particularly cool as it has a north facing wall and is shaded by trees.

Our lounge is north facing and as the house is old it has thick walls. Stays nice and cool.

My North facing lounge, a big bonus in the summer.

My east facing living room is the coolest room in the house once the sun has gone round to the back where the conservatory is around lunch time. It’s been stifling in there today even with the doors open so the living room was the place to be. Although my bedroom is directly above the living room, heat rises so by the time I go to bed it can be a tad too warm. This house is very well insulated so it’s never really cold in the winter.

My sitting room …it faces north …. for 45 weeks a year I avoid it ( I have a smaller south facing one ) ….for the remaining 6-7 weeks it’s bliss!!

The pantry. It's the only room with a north facing window.

The coolest room in the house in summer will always be the room(s) that do not face the afternoon sun. That would be my master bedroom. Even though it has morning sunshine it’s still the coolest - by about 5 degrees!

Bella23 Mon 26-Jun-23 15:12:50

It's the lounge, the bedrooms are unbearable the house should have been built upside down.

The garage. Not a comfortable space to relax in. But in a dire heatwave we could park couple of directors chairs in it.

Our bedroom is cool in summer if flipping cold in winter. Living room comfortable all year round. We don’t do badly.

I am not a bit concerned about which room in the house is coolest, as I am enjoying a warm, dry summer as long as it lasts.

What does concern me is which room is coldest in the winter and what the heck we can do about it.

It takes all sorts to make a world, doesn't it?

lizzypopbottle Mon 26-Jun-23 13:28:21

We live in a bungalow. The front room is North facing and so are two of the bedrooms. They are the coolest in this weather and definitely the coldest in winter 😨

DamaskRose Mon 26-Jun-23 12:49:33

Living room downstairs, my study/sewing room upstairs - now re-named The North Wing by friend! 😂

Baggs Mon 26-Jun-23 12:16:43

It's the kitchen normally. In hot weather, which is rare here anyway, the house is cooler than outside.

Sawsage2 Mon 26-Jun-23 12:14:17

My living room is coolest, as is bedroom in bungalow. Conservatory far too hot.

J52 Mon 26-Jun-23 12:12:47

North facing kitchen and south facing sitting room, ideal in hot summer and cold winter. The kitchen has a stone floor so cool to cook in. When the weather is hot we mostly sit outside, but in the winter the sun shines into the sitting room, making it cosy.
Fortunately the garden is not overlooked so sun gets in all day.

Nannan2 Mon 26-Jun-23 11:58:29

Why are there so many cold living rooms? Do builders not factor in that we might want to be warm in winter when we probably spend longer nights in there?!!

Applegran Mon 26-Jun-23 11:56:26

I've got a lovely fan - makes hot rooms tolerable - including bedroom at night. I got one recommended by Which - not the most expensive one but quiet, and effective.

Nannan2 Mon 26-Jun-23 11:50:40

No matter where i live it always seems to be the living room.Draughts mainly making it too cold.Even with excluder on.(ive even 'boarded up' the huge fireplace here in new place with cardboard) -fire unusable-Its always much warmer outside in garden, and i've to have heat on later when it drops a bit chilly even when other folk are making an energy saving with the warmer weather.

The Lounge or the downstairs loo here until the sun moves over at tea time. Lovely breeze today much more pleasant to be out in.

Grammaretto Mon 26-Jun-23 03:47:32

I'm in Scotland grin
Seriously though, I have never been too hot even at night but my pottery studio with it's stone floor is particularly cool in the morning.
My DSis was so unbearably hot, and pregnant, in London in the summer of 1976, she came to stay with me until the heatwave subsided.

Downstairs bedroom/DH's office which faces north. Almost as cool is the dining room.

JackyB Sun 25-Jun-23 20:18:44

Thanks to German building standards, very thick insulation all round the house, and shutters which close out sound light and heat, I can keep the whole house fairly cool. But we have temperatures of over 30° outside. I'm still too hot. Hide in bedroom with occasional trips under the shower.

At night shutters and windows are wide open, letting in cooler air.

Just discovered that the back stairs, just outside the very hot kitchen, are cool and have a lovely draught coming down from all the open windows.

Not comfortable but cool.
