The coolest room in the house

I’ve just realised it’s the bathroom in our house.

Off to see if I can fit my garden easy chair for a good read!

Ours is the lounge. We always complain about how cold it is in the winter when we are huddled around the fire.

In my home it's the kitchen/garden room that stays cool all day. It's bliss in hot weather. I can sit in the cool, but look out through French doors onto my garden.

The downstair loo is the coolest room in our old house-! No room for a garden chair. The bedrooms are under the eaves and are very warm in this hot weather.

Ours is the lounge which faces North too.

My bedroom is cool, with blackout blinds and a ceiling fan. That’s where I am now after a fitful sleep. My 8 year old GS stayed over and he slept with me. But my gosh - he can kick for England!!! By early morning he was 90degrees to me , with his legs on my face 😂

Our living room has three windows and lets the sun in from dawn to dusk, so at the moment we keep the blinds and the curtains closed all day and we have a large fan running when we’re in that room. We keep blinds and curtains closed in all rooms where the sun shines until it moves around. The study is like a sauna first thing in the morning as the sun shines straight in and we only have a blind in there. We can open the patio door in there though. The patio is in shade from mid morning and so we use it for morning coffee and just chilling. The dining room is probably the coolest but we don’t want to live in there as it only has a dining table and chairs and the piano and stool in there.

My living room is the coolest. It faces east so gets the morning sun but I keep the blinds closed until the sun moves round and hits the back of the house. I have a fan on at the moment which is making it pleasantly cool

The spare bedroom is the coolest , freezing in winter , but lovey and cool in the summer

Iam64 Sun 25-Jun-23 13:41:02

I’m in the kitchen dining room. Patio doors open to allow the breeze in along with the big fan on full. The dogs can go anywhere,-all three flat out near the fan )so am I)

GrandmaSeaDragon Sun 25-Jun-23 13:47:38

The snug, north facing front of our home. Sun only reaches there about 6 pm at this time of year. It’s also the warmest place in the winter when the log burner is lit.

Our study. Faces North has the kitchen behind it absorbing the southern sun and other rooms on the other aspects. No sun, just quiet and cool.

East facing living room, the blinds stay closed till the suns gone round the side it’s lovely in the afternoon with the windows open and the breeze passing through to the back of the house. A tall glass of ice and Robinsons lemon Barley, bliss!

North facing living room. No sun at all. Ever. Leather sofa is so cool too. Bliss after being out in the sun all morning.

North east facing sitting room. Windows wide open - very pleasant. Although I’ve actually just come in from the garden to see how the tennis is doing as I like the Spanish lad.

Cabbie21 Sun 25-Jun-23 15:29:13

North facing sitting room. I don't even need the fan on for long. Too noisy to open the widows however, but the double glazing keeps it very quiet.

ginny Sun 25-Jun-23 15:35:49

Our kitchen and dining room face North so never get any sun through the windows. Nice and cool and a sofa in the dining room for a comfortable read.

Jaxjacky Sun 25-Jun-23 15:50:53

Kitchen/diner faces East, living room West, if we keep the blinds closed at the right time and windows open/closed the living room is bearable. If not the chiller unit is set up in the living room.

Just discovered that the back stairs, just outside the very hot kitchen, are cool and have a lovely draught coming down from all the open windows.

Not comfortable but cool.

Thanks to German building standards, very thick insulation all round the house, and shutters which close out sound light and heat, I can keep the whole house fairly cool. But we have temperatures of over 30° outside. I'm still too hot. Hide in bedroom with occasional trips under the shower.

At night shutters and windows are wide open, letting in cooler air.

Downstairs bedroom/DH's office which faces north. Almost as cool is the dining room.

Grammaretto Mon 26-Jun-23 03:47:32

I'm in Scotland grin
Seriously though, I have never been too hot even at night but my pottery studio with it's stone floor is particularly cool in the morning.
My DSis was so unbearably hot, and pregnant, in London in the summer of 1976, she came to stay with me until the heatwave subsided.

The Lounge or the downstairs loo here until the sun moves over at tea time. Lovely breeze today much more pleasant to be out in.

Nannan2 Mon 26-Jun-23 11:50:40

No matter where i live it always seems to be the living room.Draughts mainly making it too cold.Even with excluder on.(ive even 'boarded up' the huge fireplace here in new place with cardboard) -fire unusable-Its always much warmer outside in garden, and i've to have heat on later when it drops a bit chilly even when other folk are making an energy saving with the warmer weather.

Applegran Mon 26-Jun-23 11:56:26

I've got a lovely fan - makes hot rooms tolerable - including bedroom at night. I got one recommended by Which - not the most expensive one but quiet, and effective.
