Distasteful TV adverts

I know I should post this somewhere appropriate but the sheer effort of finding something relevant is tedious.

I just want to vent about the Kleenex advert where a young woman openly sneezes into the lens of the camera. I have a horror of people sneezing without a tissue or handkerchief and this advert sickens me so much that I have to look away or switch off.
Also the one for incontinence pads where the actor claims to be "releasing her pee, letting it all go!"
Do we really have to be disgusted by these gross and offensive adverts, which in my case, only make me vow NEVER to buy that product?

Thank goodness I record everything so that I can watch when I want to. Not seen any of them. I hadn't realised the ads were so awful, as I usually fast forward through them. If I want to know where to get something, I'll Google it.

Starting by saying that it was too tedious to go to the sheer effort of finding a relevant place to post this complaint was not a good start. Frankly I don’t care if it helps folk use a tissue or sort out minor incontinence. On the other hand maybe I am mildly irritated by posts to trigger more moans!

... which you are perfectly free to ignore!

You might not have noticed - but we are also having a bit of fun with these adverts.

Totally agree with you.
Anything to do with bodily junctions either men or woman, makes me squirm.

This TAMPAX advert during one of the "Britain's Got Talent" shows raised a few hackles.

... "you've got to get them up there girls!" explained the chat-show host in a 'female blokey-matey' kind of way.

I don't think we should be over-coy about these things but I do cringe at the 'street culture' approach to advertising such products, just to show the "with-it" credentials of the company.

The advert does make a good point though, albeit I agree about the style of it - tampons are very effective, but they must be inserted properly otherwise leaking can occur.

Oh absolutely. Another important message to get across is to watch out for Toxic Shock Syndrome.

I've no problem with such messages / advertising, it's the linguistic 'blokey' style - women using male jokey-jargon to signal their 'street-cred'. It just comes across as a tad coarse, totally lacking any finesse, but I accept I might be in a minority thinking it so - not to mention being out-of-fashion with modern trends. I guess being an 'inclusive' society means just that - we have to accept and tolerate all styles of expression and idioms!

Callistemon21 Mon 03-Jul-23 14:24:19

So you're moaning about other posters having an opinion then?

Can’t seem to do a link, but ‘Mitchell and Webb, women, sort yourselves out’ will find it on YouTube
Very funny! And so true….

... that rings a bell - I'll try to find it!

PS though using tampons has never resulted in me being more sporty grin

Cossy Mon 03-Jul-23 14:10:38

Tbh I’m not offended by any adverts ever and if I was I’d use my on-off button or watch on catch-up and skip the adverts. Bodily functions have never bothered me, oh and to the lady who thinks leakages of urine can be fixed by the doctor, not always the case I’m afraid

PamQS Mon 03-Jul-23 13:40:15

I’m fed up of seeing people sticking their fingers in their cooking them licking it, to see what it tastes like, and then not rinsing or cleaning the finger, yuck! Not just in adverts, of course.

narrowboatnan Mon 03-Jul-23 13:38:59

Crikey, I didn’t know about half of these ads - I should make the effort to watch more telly, I’m obviously missing out 😳

Pjcpjc77 Mon 03-Jul-23 13:22:54

Totally agree!

NanaDana Mon 03-Jul-23 12:49:49

Bodily functions are not a spectator sport. Yes, of course we all have them, but I suspect that most of us believe that it's accepted behaviour to just get on with them in private. We don't need graphic displays of people sitting on loos, or pouring blue liquid onto pads in order to form an opinion of whether or not we want to buy the item being advertised. Do the advertisers really believe that we're all so feeble-minded that we couldn't possibly understand a verbal presentation of what the item's selling points are? I think that society has progressed well beyond the point where such issues were considered "taboo", but thankfully, we still choose to carry out certain bodily functions in private, so adverts should respect that. They are examples of some of the more civilised behaviours which differentiate us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Playing the "freedom of expression" or "I'm liberated" card just won't wash here, and suggesting that those of us, and there are many, who cringe at some of these adverts are somehow over-inhibited is just a cheap, inaccurate shot. Bad taste remains bad taste, however "hip" you try to make it.

Thoroughly dislike the one for a washing perfume booster where women are sniffing in rapture at a man at the bus stop and in a lift and then sniffing socks . Ugh.

The ad for a male deodorant called Africa and smells of GOAT? They have to be joking. Are. there any farmers on Gransnet who raise goats? Does your experience of goat smell correspond with mine?

It's a play on G.O.A.T - Greatest Of All Time!

Scottiebear Mon 03-Jul-23 12:24:27

Dislike the pee pants ad where the women to to a concert and one is sitting on man's shoulders. Don't think any woman needs graphic (blood) pictures or a woman sitting on a loo. Hate ads with children being handed something by an adult and just taking it and running off. Surely ads could have them saying thank you. Gambling ads are appalling and I think they should be banned. Daisy, daisy, daisy ad makes the girls in ad look silly. But there are some very good ads out there. Particularly like some of the animal ones.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 03-Jul-23 12:21:07

Yes, we all have bodily functions, but like anything else we discuss or advertise for, it would be nice if we could stick to decent language and graphics!

We can safely add the ads for products to help men with englarged prostates and ads for codoms to the list of ads we would rather not see all over the place.

I have no objection to any of these ads in a pharmacy or doctor's waiting-room, but we do not need them IMO on TV during family viewing hours, or plastered all over practically any magazine or local newspaper you can find.

Some people do have an agenda, Witzend and some parents who are desperate to be politically correct and on trend fall for it.

There is just no decorum these days.

#GrumpyOldWoman

Nowadays it’s called ‘being open and honest’ Callistemon. I’ve known the term used by someone who IMO was a bit of a perve, who enjoyed talking to children about sex.

Lollin Mon 03-Jul-23 09:41:22

Witzend to think it’s 12 years ago and still pertinent to today, some things don’t change.

It's not so much that they're about bodily functions that these ads annoy me (although they do) it's that apart from the erectile disfunction ones, obvs, it's always women's bums and front bums 😆 that are zoomed in on. It's not normalizing, it's prurient.

...it's always women's bums and front bums 😆 that are zoomed in on. It's not normalizing, it's prurient.

Hear, hear!

It's the over-emphasis on women's bodies; the shaving of legs to get rid of that 'ugly' (though natural) hairiness; the 'panties' that flatten those unflattering curves of flesh; the bra' that 'lifts'; the tampon that gives you 'freedom'... not to mention the 'fragrance' that leaves you gibbering "Daisy, Daisy, Daisy" whilst you femininely frolic in the long grass...

And when it all goes pear-shaped with age, never mind - there's some nice, bulky paper knickers to soak up the wee as you zip-line over the terrain into your lover's arms, confident that the 'image' we all have to try to live up to is restored.

Meanwhile, the only thing men have to worry about is their possible erectile dysfunction - even tho' they too suffer from incontinence, expanding and sagging flesh, and 'odours'.

However - we are the main purchasers, we are the ones looking on the shelves in supermarkets for the products that will keep us and our men-folk forever young. And as we - and the rest of society it seems - are obsessed with our appearance, then we will be the target for the advertisers!

Dickens, you’ve reminded me of that hilarious TV comedy skit on this very theme.
It’s on YouTube - if I can remember and find it, I’ll post a link.
