Worse than finding a spider

Finding a large marauding spider in your living room is terrifying enough. But even worse is when it disappears before you can deal with it (ie summons your DH) and you know it is still there, somewhere, hiding, waiting to pounce!!!😱🕷

I don't understand the fear either. It's illogical but there it is.
I have a friend who cannot cope with birds or butterflies. Another who is terrified of snakes and one cannot handle cotton wool balls!
A colleague at work was so scared of rats you couldn't even mention the word in her presence.

After reading Charlotte's Web as a child, I've always left spiders well alone and have never had a fear of them.

Wild rats though shock, we had a cat a long time ago who, one evening, literally dragged in a huge rat. It was alive and ran behind the sideboard with the cat in hot pursuit...my mum went next door to ask the neighbour for help, he was a huge man, very tough etc. The rat peeked out and all 3 of us fled!

I have cine film of me tickling tarantulas out of their holes in the jungle in Malaya ,with a piece of long grass (when I was 8/9), but I am now petrified of even tiny spiders! (I get all hot and bothered when I see them - even behind glass in zoos!
How does that work?

There is a new type of spider now that jumps at you. Haha. Watch out for them!

Granny always said 'if you want to live and thrive let a spider run alive' and I do
I find them fascinating and always have a Web in the flat. We are not troubled by flies. Have to say that rats freak me out

Spiders - I'm better than I used to be although I will wear a turban when I have to do anything in the garage as the thought of one in my hair - shudders. I have a lot of the long legged spindly ones in my house and I've only insisted one had to leave when I put on reading glasses to have a look at him properly as he seemed to have grown a lot .. to find he was a she and was surrounded by hundreds of tiny baby spindly legged (serious shivers just thinking about)... A tea towel and out the door into the rain, I'm afraid, and I chucked the tea towel a few days later when I was brave enough to retrieve it ....

Mice however. I work in a Grade II listed building near London Bridge Station, and we are infested with the buggers. Many a jolly hour chasing them with a bin or, one occasion, me with salad bowl while colleague moved furniture. Got him too! They live in the ceiling ductwork, or in the floor boxes, had one shimmy up the telephone cable and scamper around my desk one afternoon - not desirable co-workers at all, dreadful toilet habits, but they don't bother me.

Spiders don’t bother me but I don’t seem to get many inside my home . However, if it was a rat I would be horrified and panicking .
I once had a bat come inside somehow, I wasn’t scare but was upset about getting it out without hurting it.

Doesn't bother me at all. However, if it was a mouse, very different story!

Me too.

Frankly, not being afraid of spiders or daddy-long-legs is a great boon, but I simply CANNOT sit comfortably in any room, either in a private house or a hotel or restaurant that contains an aquarium.

I am scared of fish! (I know it's odd, but that's the way I am made.)

I am so glad to know that I am not alone. This particular specimen was seen in my living room by my DD yesterday. She was visiting and had baby GD with her. DD has herself had successful therapy to beat her own arachnophobia. She was remarkably calm though she left soon after. I spent all evening waitin for it to reappear. But nothing so far.

It is interesting to read about every ones different fears.

I have a Cornish racing spider living behind my kitchen dresser. I think it’s a close relative of Red Rum!
I’m not frightened of spiders fortunately!

I'd rather a spider than an earwig

Absolutely scare the life out of me

Same here VioletSky
Although I've not seen any earwigs for years they make me shudder.
I can remember as a child when I used to see them crawl out of dahlias. My dad used to grow them and mum would cut them and put them in a vase. They used to come out and walk over the windowsill. Yuk. I hate their pincer things at the back.

I’m the same, although not fond of spiders, I would never kill one, but earwigs do make me shudder as well, shiny little bodies, pointy little horns on their head 🤢

For me it's big hairy moths and daddy longlegs. I think it's their erratic behaviour. I'm scared if drunks as well!

Quichette Tue 04-Jul-23 21:24:37

I am only cautious around black widow and brown recluse spiders here I am quite tolerant of the others as well as the centipedes I see occasionally I hate the blackbeetles which come out of the drains and the flies coming in from outside on sanitary grounds and am happy to have the spider and centipede cleanup crew!

semperfidelis Tue 04-Jul-23 22:14:40

I once lived in an ancient beamed cottage. One Winter's night, with all the windows closed, a bat flew down the stairs. I was terrified, I find them very spooky. Much running around waving a spatula...until it eventually flew out the back door.

Oh, my goodness, millipedes and centipedes absolutely make my skin crawl…🤦‍♀️

I have a phobia about birds and finding a dead one in my raspberry bushes totally freaked me out! DH had to deal with it.

nanna8 Wed 05-Jul-23 10:45:28

Cockroaches. Hate, hate, hate them. They are so fast and black and yucky. They have cockroach races in Brisbane,so I hear. Nasty. Even my cats don’t like them. I can’t help it but if I see one I scream, even when I am alone.

Lovetopaint037 Wed 05-Jul-23 10:51:15

That spider will be on the look out for those germ ridden flies. Look after him.

Athrawes Wed 05-Jul-23 12:04:45

Spiders are not my favourite creature but over time I've been getting used to them - as long as they don't crawl on me. We have loads in our shed and I keep bird and hedgehog food there so have spiders as company when I'm dolling out the food to the wild life. I get the feeling I'm being stared at but they don't bother me which helps me get used to them. They have a right to be there I tell myself.
It's in the house I don't like them. The smaller ones are OK but occasionally we get a fat bodied one but again I'm getting better at removing them - I don't want to kill them so out comes the glass, or if they're smaller I have a spider tube which is easy for me to put the creature outside.
We're lucky in the UK. There are no eight legged enemies really that can hurt us - it's just their appearance!

I opened my composter and a large sleek rat was running around inside. I wouldn’t mind if their tails were furry but those naked pink tails, ugh. Spiders terrify me, though, even the ones with very small bodies & thin legs. I cannot rest if I know one is around, and I can tell by spider poo on my window ledges, ugh.

That’s why I stopped having a compost bin!
