My trip down memory lane today ( I’m sure I should be doing something more productive 😊)

I’ve looked out my Barbie doll who’s been in my possession since around 1963. My cousin was on a family visit from Canada and gave me her Barbie and a few outfits. She’s in remarkably good condition for a 60 year old.

My childhood friend had a doll with a key to make her hair grow. Was it Tressy? One day when her hair was fully extended her little brother decided she needed a haircut and chopped it off 🤣

Yes a Tressy, I was that brother, but my sister is younger than me.

I remember my brothers finding Dad's razor and playing barbers with their teddies.

🤣🤣

Poor teddies, bare and cold ☹

After reading this thread Toy land social services will be along any time 😆

This Morning are doing a section on Barbie and Sindy dolls today if anyone is interested. Their value etc.

Grannynannywanny Tue 11-Jul-23 11:02:53

I must check it out Kate1949 in case I’m sitting on a gold mine.

Kate1949 Tue 11-Jul-23 12:13:14

Yes!

I remember being desperate for a Sindy doll. None could be found locally. I finally got one from a shop in Birmingham when visiting my aunt.

I had Sindy, Patch, Tressy and Barbie. I remember getting Sindy with a few outfits for my birthday. Came with a free single (vinyl record!) too which I was mortified not to be able to play as we had no record player at the time. I loved my Sindy and would save up my pocket money to get new outfits for her. Was eventually seduced by the more ‘grown up’ glamour of Tressy and Barbie but I will never forget the thrill of my Sindy doll! I think my sister has them now as she likes to keep as many of our old toys (and her children’s) as she can. I’m not so sentimental, I’m afraid!

I used to have an Action Girl who got up to lots of adventures with my brothers Action Man . Was too much of a tomboy to want a Barbie ha

My niece had a Sindy doll and I made clothes, a tent and a doll for it and my husband a wardrobe for it.

My niece had a Sindy doll and I made clothes, a tent and a doll for it and my husband a wardrobe for it.

I used to knit clothes for Sindy and Action Man.

In fact, we still have some of Sindy's wardrobe but Action Man got passed on to another child. sad

Did you watch? Is Sindy worth thousands? 😲

Here is Sabina, dressed and packed to go on a business trip, she is an international lawyer, Emilie in her first solo role as a ballerina, and both girls at home with their cousins, Rafael on the left with Veronika next to him.

They have all been rescued naked from the local charity shop. And are all Mattel dolls of varying ages. Veronika and Sabina er more or less identical, but Veronika's hair had been cut when I found her.

I have washed the dolls carefully using a weak solution of washing up liquid in water as shampoo, rinsed their hair well in luke-warm water, and then in a lotion which is two parts glycerin, one part rose-water (made by steeping red rose petals immersed in water, in a sealed jam-jar for a week on a sunny window-sill, then bottling it) and one part vinegar.

I find a stff bristled clothes brush or a discarded, but clean toothbrush makes a more gentle hair-brush for dolls with nylon or acyrlic hair than a hairbrush or comb does.

I was another cutter of Tressy’s hair. Thought it would grow back! 😳

Chardy Tue 11-Jul-23 21:19:32

AreWeThereYet

I had Tressy and Patch. For some reason I cut all Tressy's long blonde hair off.

You cut Tressy's hair because '🎵her hair grows🎶'

grandtanteJE65 that’s an impressive display! I’m feeling a little sorry for my solo Barbie in a shoe box and not seeing the light of day for years .

Callistemon21 Tue 11-Jul-23 21:57:45

Thanks Grandtante

I must give them some TLC. I can find Sindy's tutu and ballet shoes but not her leotard or tights. 😲

I had Sindy and her bed and wardrobe but Tiny Tears was my favourite and I still have her 56 years on .. I knitted her a new dress and some socks.

Callistemon21 Tue 11-Jul-23 23:31:10

We still have Tiny Tears and her big sister but they're in a box since DGS said they gave him the creeps staring at him 😀

Gran16 Tue 11-Jul-23 23:32:41

I had Pippa dolls, they were smaller than Sindys. I never owned a Barbie. Yours is gorgeous OP.

CanadianGran Wed 12-Jul-23 01:32:20

It's funny, I can't quite remember what type of doll my sister and I had, but they weren't Barbies. They were a bit bigger, if I remember, and wouldn't fit Barbie clothes. Maybe they were Sindy dolls sent over from my Aunt in Jersey.

I seem to remember we lost interest in them rather quickly. Perhaps we just weren't interested in dolls that much. I do remember my Mum knitting a few tiny jumpers for them.

I’ve found the Tressy advert on YouTube.

Short, long or in between Tressy’s hair makes her queen 🎵

But only if the scissors are out of reach 😆
