BlueBelle that’s the futuristic film I watched in the 80s but I couldn’t remember the title!

I remember Soylent Green I think the futuristic message was lost on me back then, might resonate more now.

Even the title of this thread makes me feel nauseous.

Haven't seen it. Can't stand Greg Wallace. I suppose it's a modern twist on Swift's satirical piece "A Modest Proposal" in which he proposes that the problem of Irish poverty could be solved if they sold their children to the rich

The problem is TV isn't the written word and Greg Wallace isn't Jonathan Swift.

What's disgraceful beside the programme is our license fee paid for that trash.

I have just looked up this programme, it was a mockumentary not a documentary

In the same genre as science fiction programmes.

There is a quite disturbing film called “The farm"running along the same lines..

and a science fiction book 'The Harvest' - that gave me nightmares as a child! Aliens had put us here to farm us.

It was a spoof, trying to get people angry about food production, poverty etc - seems it just got people angry!

Makes me so sad.
We have amazing farmers and wonderful cattle who can be traced back hundreds of years.
Can you imagine your country without animals what a sad future.
Make sure if you continue to eat red meat you buy from a traceable source where the animals are treated with respect and dignity.

Soylent Green was dead people turned into food for an over-populated Earth. It was a very good last film of Edward G Robinson.

I didn't see the programme, and judging by these descriptions, I certainly don't want to, but Jonathan Swift published a satirical essay called A Modest Proposal in 1929, in which he suggested that the problem of famine in Ireland could be solved if people there either ate their babies, or exported their flesh to England.

So the idea is hardly new. If it is meant only as a satire as Swift's essay was, it may be distasteful, but is hardly sick.

If it was meant seriously, it is no worse than the cult being uncovered in Kenya right now, where a pastor encouraged his flock to starve themselves and their children to death in order to meet Jesus, or the Nazis making lampshades of human skin. Both are sickening, as are any and all atrocities.

Me too, he's got that manic look in his eyes and a rictus grin. Very creepy!

I saw solyent green with Charlton Heston. One of those early made to shock 1970s films. Humans were farmed for food. I don't like Greg Wallace, I think he's been sacked for saying insulting things about the people he meets on his programmes. When he's on master chef he turns me off with his constant shouting and stupid comments.

I watched this with my grandson aged 17. We became suspicious after a few minutes and a quick check on Google confirmed that the programme was a spoof.
It was supposed to be shocking and horrible, but I got mixed messages. Was this about the lengths people might go to get money in this cost of living crisis? Or was it a bit of creepy sci-fi disguised as a cheery documentary? Or was it to do with an alternative to raising cattle to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Actually, I do normally rather like Greg Wallace's programmes about factory production of everyday things.

Well - I thought it was an interesting concept and really funny! Of course, as a vegan, what I do find totally disgusting and vile is the totally unnecessary torture and murder of innocent animals.

Is it 'human' meat if it isn't directly from a human being but grown in a lab from a few cells? This is not a piece of a human being which is how I'd define "human meat".

Really? Misinformattion or ignorance? If you continue to eat red meat at least admit that you support cruelty. There is no meat production without pain and suffering.

I'm actually in favour of lab grown meat (soon to be 'factory grown'). It's very efficient as only muscle meat is cultured. Following the initial harvest of some cells (unfortunately, a little pain, equivalent to a blood test - on one animal) they can be reproduced endlessly.

Despite the fact that eating meat is optional and unnecessary, (so it goes against my principles) I'm a realist - so at least all those millions of short, painful lives could be spared.
