Podcasts

I listen to it on Apple Podcasts and don’t seem to get the annoying adverts. I’m not sure what actually happened. I used to listen to it on acast, then the adverts took over, then I couldn’t access it at all and then I suddenly found myself listening to it via Apple. Not sure if I’ll have to pay for it at some point? Same thing happened with The Rest is History. I also love In Our Time and You’re Dead to Me on BBC Sounds. I listen to podcasts all the time and, if I can’t access them I don’t know what to do with myself? I like Natural Histories on BBC Sounds, too.

My favourite is Philosophy Bites which has been going for 16 years, run by Nigel Warburton and David Edmonds.

These are short, around 15 minute, discussions on a philosophical issue that can often lead me to further reading and listening e.g. recently, Keiran Setiya on Loneliness. That lead me to his own podcast Five Questions (which you can find on Castbox along with another 259,000,000 volumes of audio content!).

In the PB discussion, I was struck by what what Warburton and Setiya had to say about the relationship between humans and pets.

That lead me to listen to Tim Crane talking about Animal Minds.

(Anyone who has read Bonnie Garmus's novel Lessons in Chemistry will be familiar with the loyal "thinking" dog Six-Thirty.)

For a broader range of subjects and a longer listen, Melvyn Bragg's In Our Time is hard to beat imo.

I listen to podcasts whenever I leave the house, it means I walk further with something else to concentrate on and shopping doesn't seem so much of a chore.

I really enjoyed The Death of Nuance on BBC Sounds the other year. I must listen to it again if it’s still available. And I loved My Teenage Diaries but that’s only available on Audible now.

Lots of good podcasts on the BBC Sounds app.

I can recommend The Big Travel Podcast, especially the one when she interviews her father.

I see that the latest edition of the Radio Times 5-11 August has a Podcast Special with something from Andi and Miquita Oliver.

I listen to Dr Rangan Chatterjee Feel better, Live more podcast and Clear and Vivid with Alan Alda mainly because I loved him as Hawkeye in MASH.

Thank you, LtEve. I've like Alda too for his roles in Woody Allen films and on ER and West Wing too. I like his New York accent. I found Clear & Vivid on Castbox. Some interesting topics to listen too.

This American Life is another I love too - I am working my way through all the back catalogue now foxie. I'm in 2014 at the moment.

Never listened to one.

Can highly recommend ‘Older and Wider’ by Jenny Eclair and Judith Holder . They talk about their lives, issues we can all relate to plus a ‘culture corner’ segment. Very funny ! Do give it a listen

Yes I appreciate a podcast to take on a walk as I find it hard to walk without a purpose apart from need for exercise.

i like to listen to radio on the radio.
i will miss when they take radio 4 extra off the radio.
i know i can listen to it on the laptop, but it doesn't seem as enjoyable to be chasing it up.
i like the randomness of turning on the radio and finding something interesting.
i remember having the same sort of discussion about 40 years ago re music on the radio, as i didn't compile tapes of favourites then either.
perhaps i am just v set in my ways, or nostalgic.
but i do like youtube videos. some of them.

BBC Sounds has Life Changing episodes. Fascinating stories of real life-changing events told by the people who experienced them.

I like podcasts, but most of them put me to sleep!

A really good podcast is well produced, has the message (topic) you’re interested in, might have background music for emphasis, and will hold your interest like you’re into a good book! You can’t wait for the next one!

The narrator’s/moderator’s voice is all important! Who wants to listen to a bunch of babbling personalities at a roundtable? Give me two/three voices in discussion.

There are so many to pick from, where do you start? I have to go by word-of-mouth, what’s trending, what’s relevant.

I love them - The Rest is History, Thé Rest is Politics, Newscast, Radio 4 podcasts like In Our Time, and Zoe Science and Nutrition. If you like history BBC History Extra and Not Just The Tudors are also great.

I would especially like to recommend Zoe Science and Nutrition. Helpful information delivered in an entertaining way, based on fascinating new research.
