Supermarket delivery charges

For the past year, we have had a weekly groceries delivery from Sainsburys, having paid £60 for a year’s Delivery Pass. This has now gone up to £80. I guess other supermarket’s pass charges will have increased too? Looks like Tesco is about £84, with £50 minimum spend. Wondering whether to continue, though it is so convenient.

I think the convenience outweighs the price, there is travel to and from, sometimes in bad weather, and the time it all takes to physically shop, I also think you spend more in-store, buying things that you would not have noticed and probably don't need.

I haven't tried the Delivery Pass scheme, but have been considering it - but even if I get a delivery every week it may not be worth it.
I use Tesco and the cheapest delivery is £2 for a £50 basket so I''m paying £104 a year - but if I take a fortnight holiday and a week off at Christmas, I'd just about break even with an £80 Pass.
Do you get to use a set time with a pass?

I will be paying to renew my delivery pass. It is well worth it for me. The way I look at it that if someone offered me a fiver to trek to the supermarket, push a trolley round looking for all the things on their list, source substitutions where necessary, take it all through the checkout process and bring it home, I wouldn't be tempted.

I have a delivery every week so it’s worth it for me. Also gives advance access to the C****** slots.

Staceyann Mon 14-Aug-23 11:50:28

Yes, ExDancer, with Sainsburys you choose an hour’s slot - say 9-10 am - and they deliver within that time.

Hellogirl1 Mon 14-Aug-23 11:59:42

I have a delivery pass with Tesco, but it`s somewhere around £40 for the year.

I’ve never had a delivery pass as I don’t need a weekly shop. There’s never been a problem booking a delivery one or two days in advance and clicking on the Saver link, to select a time and pay £1, although this has just increased to £1.50.
I also have a delivery of M&S food through Ocado, and deliveries on Wednesdays cost £1.

I've shopped online for decades but never had a delivery pass. I wouldn't want to be restricted to just one shop. I don't shop weekly either, more like every three weeks or so and more when I have visitors. I buy fresh veg and bread locally.

Sainsburys and Asda deliveries can be £1, Morrisons £1.50 (if you choose unpopular days/times) and Iceland's free if you spend over £40. Ocado and Waitrose charge about £3.

Don't other people stock up on certain things from different shops, but infrequently?

Oldnproud Mon 14-Aug-23 12:12:30

I've just renewed mine. It hurt, though!
Previously, I exchanged my rewards points at 3 × face value to pay for it, but they put a stop to that, of course.

Gosh Hellogirl your Tesco pass is cheap. We pay £48 every 6 months. I must investigate.

Well ... sometimes they do. I found Sainsburys so unreliable I changed to Tesco and if there's a delay they send a text. Recently they've introduced tracking when the van has left the depot. It was a good move on my part

Tesco have two ‘delivery savers’, the expensive one is for deliveries whenever you want, the cheaper one is changing to any day but after 3pm (used to be midweek only).

I got a text on Friday to say my delivery was running late - it was delivered on time the day before 🙄 -

Thank you Tizliz. That explains it!

That’s interesting Hetty - I shall investigate!

Kate1949, I`ve checked on Tesco website, my delivery saver is the off peak one, it`s £43.88, I have my delivery between 11am and 12 every Wednesday.

Kate1949 Mon 14-Aug-23 18:18:05

Thank you Hellogirl. I have a different one.

saltnshake Mon 14-Aug-23 18:31:24

We pay £40 a year for a Sainsbury's midweek delivery pass. They always come in the one hour delivery slot.

This will change when you have to renew, it will be after 3pm. don’t think I am going to like deliveries after dark

marshmarigold132 Tue 15-Aug-23 07:41:51

I pay £4.99 each month to Tesco for deliveries after 3pm which includes weekends.

kittylester Tue 15-Aug-23 07:49:57

I pay the lower Sainsbury's delivery charge. I have always found them incredibly reliable, polite and helpful.

TerriBull Tue 15-Aug-23 08:17:14

Aside from when we were in full lock down, I don't have deliveries very often. I have been enticed a couple of times by Ocado offering something like £15 off a shop over a certain amount, then I think I opted for a delivery time where only a charge of £1 was levied.

Galaxy Tue 15-Aug-23 08:28:56

It would cost me more in fuel than the delivery charge so I suppose it depends. I will occasionally shop in store but I always spend more.

Franbern Tue 15-Aug-23 08:42:49

I was rather taken aback at the large increase in Sainsbury's one hour delivery slots - £80 for the year. But, as has been said, the convenience is so great that I went with it. I use it three out of every four weeks. The fourth week is a trip in person to my very local, very large Tesco. Do a much smaller shop that week, but stock up on things that Tesco sells cheaper than S.bury.

Usual delivery in 10 - 11 on Sunday morning. Often they are early. I live in flat, main door is opened by remote control, delivery brought up to my front door, where I meet them with my shopping trolley into which I put all the shopping and then just wheel that through to my kitchen. My front door is in an enclosed, carpeted lobby, so if he comes early and I am still in my dressing gown does not matter.

However, last Sunday they were rather late. At 11.15 I managed to find a phone no to call, and the lady at the other end, said she would check with the driver and came back to say it was due to traffic problems. Sounded strange - anyway I asked what recompense I would get for this latenes. Silence at first, I had to really push it, asking for name and telephone No. to contact. (remained calm and polite throughout, but insistent). She abruptly, eventually told me that a five pound voucher had been entered into basket. I thanked her!!!
When delivery arrived he told me that it was nothing to with traffic, but the first delivery had been very large, and very complicated had taken nearly half an hour and Sainsury had only allocated nine minutes for it.
