Should Prince William fly to Australia to support the Lionesses?

Personally I think he should but I think cost and carbon footprint have been given as the reasons for him not to go.

What are your views or do you not care either way?

Australia would have been responsible for his safety

Be ridiculous to travel for two days there then two days back for a 90 minute cricket match. The jet lag would be horrendous.

I guess you don’t take much interest in sport! 😂

He needs to be around because what? You didn't really write that in all seriousness surely Sussaxborn ?

Sussexborn Fri 25-Aug-23 13:22:17

He had already spoken to both the women’s and men’s teams saying that he wouldn’t be attending but has a special reception arranged for their return.

He also needs to be around because the Markles are likely to kick off at any time, especially if they think it will spoil the royals break.

Charles still loves Harry and is very hurt by his actions but william is way past that and lives and supports his father.

When the royals travel that kind of distance they generally meet a wide number of different sections of society and have time to see if they can help in any way.

Whatever he does will be criticised by the woke brigade so he might as well do what suits him and his family best.

With all that’s gone on over the last year or so, he might just need to relax and recharge.

Wouldn’t it have been a good idea for young fans to be told in advance not to go to Heathrow this morning to greet the Lionesses as they would be leaving ‘by the back door?’

Apparently staff were supposed to inform fans who turned up that they wouldn’t see them but the message didn’t get through.

Some of them waited all night with placards and flowers hoping to get photos and autographs. Maybe the parents should have checked it all out first but I do hate to see youngsters disappointed especially as they were so keen to support their (losing) team.

🥲

Exactly. If PW can’t avoid protocol or security issues which prevent him from doing the job then someone who can should be chosen.

Sorry Callistemon21. He’s even less important to football than I thought. Even more reason for choosing someone more closely linked to football and not confined by protocol and security issues, don’t you think.

It is an important role, Mollygo but perhaps not suited to a member of the Royal Family if such rigid protocols prevent them from travelling to support England teams.

This (pointless) argument is likely to go round and round in ever -decreasing circles.
Could somebody please put it out of its misery?

(Or maybe somebody could blame Brexit?)

I have already said I support the idea that someone connected with football would usually, though not always, (e.g. Sepp Blatter scandal, or Gianni Infantino approving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar despite their human rights records) be a better President of FIFA than someone tied up in high security needs and now protocol.
Would PW’s presence have made the English team feel better about losing?

Prince William is not President of FIFA.

He is President of the FA.

I am pretty much a Royalist, but honestly, some of these rules and protocol need to be ditched.

👏👏👏

Apparently Prince William was unable to attend partly due to protocol. Paying for security etc would have been a problem among other things The reigning monarch has to have visited a particular Commonwealth country before P.W or any other members of the RF can visit. Ref: The Guardian, Wales online. Obviously the present monarch has not yet visited Australia so it was no can do for P.W. I had a feeling that there was a proper reason. Pity people have to wade in before exploring the facts.

The FA needs to appoint a different President, then, if royal protocol is going to interfere with the duties of the President of the FA.

They did well but not well enough. More training, etc., required. End of story. Except Sunak won't be calling a snap General Election!

At the end of the day, with the appalling things that are going on in the world, does it REALLY matter to the point of hysteria, whether the Queen of Spain , the P of W, Princess Charlotte, Infanta? or whoever flew half way round the world to watch.... A football match! which is exactly what this was! Unkind comments about Princess Charlotte are unnecessary and uncalled for, but of course she's only a girl, so her interest must be fake and only used for window dressing. How unkind and sexist is that?

Are you quite alright, Jaberwok?

You seem to be blowing the contents of this thread out of all proportion. Your own comments are the ones bordering on hysteria.

🤔

Jaberwok Sun 20-Aug-23 17:43:41

Well he wasn't and in the scheme of things it really hasn't mattered. Who knows why he chose not to, but maybe, just maybe it was a valied reason and nothing to do with the rest of us. Damned if he did damned if he didn't.poor man can't win , same with Princess Charlotte, a no win situation.

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Aug-23 17:33:43

Who's hysterical?

We're just pointing that, as President of the FA, perhaps he should have been there.
Well - I think he should have been there.

It would have been lovely if William's sons had joined their sister in wishing the Lionesses well. Reaching the final of a World Cup is a big deal even when women do it.

merlotgran Sun 20-Aug-23 12:45:29

Although - isn't she Spanish?
