Should Prince William fly to Australia to support the Lionesses?

Personally I think he should but I think cost and carbon footprint have been given as the reasons for him not to go.

What are your views or do you not care either way?

Foxygloves Fri 18-Aug-23 16:25:38

If he did how many people, here and elsewhere, would start whingeing about carbon footprint and misuse of public funds?

SueDonim Fri 18-Aug-23 16:26:41

Don’t really care about any of it. Though I guess I’d not be too happy if my Dh got called out of our family holiday at the last minute to go to Australia, leaving me with all the kids. grin

In his capacity as head of English football and heir to the throne I think he should go.

Yes, absolutely.

The plane will be going anyway, with or without him.

Are there are spare seats?

It's work!
It was always happening to me, although I don't think DH was watching football (although he got entertained in various places!).

It’s not as if they’ve had to save hard all year for a much needed break!

Spot on foxygloves.
In any case we don`t know if he has things to do that was arranged months ago.

James Cleverly and Lucy Frazer are going so doesn’t the same argument apply?

He’s president of the FA. There would be a riot if the men’s team was snubbed but then that’s unlikely to ever be a problem. 🤣🤣

Farzanah Fri 18-Aug-23 16:46:48

I think he should go, but by scheduled airline. He has used budget airlines when he has to flown before, and it’s not a holiday trip after all but a duty as president of FA.
Is it because he doesn’t want to interrupt his summer break or for climate reasons? I wonder if he would be going if it was the men’s team in the final?

Kim19 Fri 18-Aug-23 16:48:15

Why do I feel he would be there if it were the males playing? Changing his diary should always be possible as we all know it can be done when the unexpected happens. He still has time to change his mind. Actually, I'd rather Princess Anne went.

Lexisgranny Fri 18-Aug-23 16:53:23

I think he is in a “damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, damned if he changes his mind” situation. However after the European Championships there was always a possibility that the Lionesses would reach the final, maybe a privately funded family holiday as a contingency plan could have been investigated in advance, which might possibly have satisfied some of his critics

I should read the OP properly.

So - the President of the FA is not going to the final?
😲

Disgraceful!!

Mollygo Fri 18-Aug-23 16:56:01

As William, I wouldn’t go, simply because of all the whingeing that would go on about my carbon footprint and the cost of the security.
He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
On the other hand, if somebody offered to pay my fare I’d go, even though I’d be reprimanded for not caring about my DGC’s future.

Bella23 Fri 18-Aug-23 16:57:30

I agree with Lexisgranny,Damned which ever he does.

It sends out the wrong message to women's football.

It's being kicked into touch.

He can't win. Whatever he does he'll be criticised.

Casdon Fri 18-Aug-23 17:02:16

No, I don’t think anybody who isn’t already in Australia should fly there for just a few days specifically for the final. It’s such a long way for such a short visit, and not good for your body or the environment.

Anniebach Fri 18-Aug-23 17:03:31

No, a reception can be held when they come home.

Callistemon21 Fri 18-Aug-23 17:03:41

The plane's going anyway. And back.
Although he could be jet lagged - just imagine if he nodded off during the match 😲

I don’t think that makes it the right thing to do myself. I don’t think people should go just for a long weekend to Australia, and I think he’s right to set an example.

I don’t really care, but on the whole I agree with Casdon.

merlotgran Fri 18-Aug-23 17:11:44

I think he’s making a big mistake. So much for dragging the RF into the 21st century.

It’s giving out the message that the women’s game is not as important as the men’s. Saying he’s going to be watching it at home is a massive cop out. What about their hard work and sacrifices?

I’ve gone right off him! 🤣🤣

This!!

And I don't even live in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

eazybee Fri 18-Aug-23 17:32:14

Yes, whatever he does he will be wrong.
And the women's team, like all performers, are doing it by choice.
