👏👏👏*eazybee*. The person who would be in charge in Starmer’s absence? Unthinkable.

baggs I would define someone as a democratic socialist if they supported the NHS, a healthy and comprehensive level of social care, give due consideration to take back into government control things like water and the railway. Strong support for state education. Support for public services like good transport system, roads etc.

They would also recognise the need for a country, where businesses can thrive and provide the employment needed for the countries people.

I am not sure where Raynor comes in my list. Her opinion will of course be tempered by the Labours party need to win an election.

A socialist - I am unaware that there are any socialists - there would be no point in them belonging to the Labour Party as it is a strong supporter of our economic market system.
So to answer your question

Angela Raynor is not a socialist.

It's snobbery pure and simple.

It's the same snobbery that made the most worthless individual in the UK into Prime Minister with a party with an 80 seat majority in parliament.

I think that 80 seat majority was, rightly or wrongly, about "getting Brexit done". Nothing to do with snobbery about BJ's background.

I disagree, Baggs. I think that Johnson was a huge factor in securing that majority.

Angela Rayner is ignorant and uneducated, and has taken no steps to remedy the situation.

The thought of her as Deputy Prime Minister is appalling, but has a lot to do with the power of the Trade Unions.

Is this the best the Labour Party can produce?

foxie48 Sun 20-Aug-23 12:18:55

"too many MPs to mention " refers to doing lines of cocaine etc

Baggs Sun 20-Aug-23 12:18:24

Uncouth, vulgar and uneducated? That strikes me as snobbery. The only thing I don’t like about her is her belief that humans can change sex.

And that belief is enough for me not to want or to vote for anyone holding that belief, whatever their background or current politics.

Some educated people are uncouth and vulgar, as well as remarkably stupid. Formal education isn't everything, as many of our current government prove by their incompetence.

Would people describe Rayner as a socialist? Asking for a reason.

foxie48 Sun 20-Aug-23 12:17:36

I'm not a huge fan of Rayner but such double standards in this post, surely when compared to other MPs in high office her personal habits are pretty OK?

Drinks a lot on holiday with friends but not see hung over at the airport after partying in Italy with ex KGB whilst Foreign Secretary
Vapes but doesn't smoke cigarettes and vote against banning smoking in cars with children like Coffey (Health Sec)
Uses robust language but has empathy and an understanding of the plight of people less fortunate unlike Anderson (Conservative dep chair)
As far as we know doesn't do lines of cocaine, consort with prostitutes, give lucrative contracts to friends, try to sell themselves to companies for ÂŁ10K per hour etc etc
Had a child whilst a teenager, whom she cares for and lives with but hasn't got an unidentified number of children with 3 wives and other undisclosed liaisons. Too many MPs to mention
Actually I'm beginning to warm to her, compared to some of the people we have had recently in positions of power, she's pretty unremarkable!

Ilovecheese Sun 20-Aug-23 12:11:29

I thinkthe "uncouth" ship has sailed since the support Lee Anderson received on here, following his somewhat "uncouth" outburst.

maddyone Sun 20-Aug-23 11:55:24

I have the same view of Starmer. I don’t think Rayner is suitable to be deputy prime minister, but those on the far left will support her.

Since you appear to know little about Angela Rayner here is an extract from her Wikipedia page.

"Rayner was born and raised in Stockport, where she attended the state secondary Avondale School. She left school aged 16 whilst pregnant and without any qualifications. She later trained in social care at Stockport College and worked for the local council as a care worker. She eventually became a trade union representative within Unison, during which time she joined the Labour Party. Selected to contest Ashton‑under‑Lyne in 2014 and elected for the seat at the 2015 general election, she was appointed Shadow Minister for Pensions by Jeremy Corbyn in January 2016."

It seems to me that she has had more life experience than many of the Tory MPs who went to Oxbridge and have no empathy with a large part of the UK population.

At least she's honest about her view of Starmer.

Labour's deputy leader made light of her lifestyle as she acknowledged that her personality clashed with that of leader Sir Keir Starmer's, whom she described as being like a civil servant.

Speaking to the comedian Matt Forde at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ms Rayner said that she had just returned from a holiday in Spain where she had been drinking from mid-afternoon to sunrise the next morning with little food and only the occasional glass of water.(The Daily Mail)

At least she's being truthful.

I think this is a strange thread NiceNanny

I think there's plenty of strange threads on GN, scroll past if you don't like them, that's what I do.

I'm on a few Forums on Facebook and one of the reasons they give for not voting Labour is Rayner, it's a slow Sunday just thought I'd throw it out there

MayBee70 Sun 20-Aug-23 11:25:34

Just remind me who’s deputy leader of the current government. Does he( whoever he is) inspire confidence? Hasn’t he replaced someone who left under a cloud?? For what it’s worth I don’t think Angela will be deputy leader because she’d be better deployed elsewhere. I’d like it to be Yvette. Either way, I can’t wait for the cabinet to be full of people who genuinely want to make this country a better place. I mean, what exactly has Coffey done to improve the environment??

MaizieD Sun 20-Aug-23 11:19:41

P.S. The Adored Boris was also cr*p at his job. Not, I think, an accusation which could be flung at Angela

MaizieD Sun 20-Aug-23 11:17:31

Goodness me. The Adored Boris wasn't averse to a bit of hard partying (even with Russian spies or when it was a criminal offence)

Talk about double standards...

Whitewavemark2 Sun 20-Aug-23 11:16:00

Until Starmer wins the election, we won’t know who if anyone (it isn’t compulsory) is deputy PM.

Anniebach Sun 20-Aug-23 11:15:19

I’d prefer Yvette Cooper

JaneJudge Sun 20-Aug-23 11:13:15

I don't mind her but I'd also prefer Yvette Cooper.
