Gutted we are not now going to see Robbie Williams

As soon as tickets went on sale my friend and I bought tickets to see RW on Sat night at Sandringham.

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that you could not take folding chairs. I asked why not because you could at other concerts there and they said it was because other concerts are around 8,000 visitors but RW is 25,000!

I am pretty good healthwise but I doubt whether I could stand from about 3pm to 11.30 pm. All you are allowed is a picnic rug and then we both started worrying in case we can’t get up again! It’s sold out both Sat and Sun nights with waiting list of 7,000 so we got refunds on tickets. Gutted to be honest but have loads of recorded RW footage to watch.

Another friend is going to see The Who on Mon night and she said she will be so embarrassed because she has to get hauled up once she sits down.

The minds are willing but our vintage bodies are not. 😢

There is an area where seats are provided and where you can use your own chair, with loos nearby, but you have to pay extra for that.

It’s an extra £150 to sit in the VIP area GSM on top of your £85 ticket.

Yes I know. I was just telling BL that there was provision for people needing to sit and be near the loo.

Ok. I don’t think it’s that big an area actually. When we went to see Quo we were surprised how small the VIP area was there.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 26-Aug-23 16:47:57

Probably not too many people needing it and willing to pay so much extra.

DD and I went to see Bruce Springsteen and it was the same. We were very uncomfortable sitting on the grass but found if we sat back to back it was ok! We stood for the concert itself and a very nice man helped me stand up. Next time we will definitely investigate paying more for seating or go to a stadium to see him.

I've been to four live gigs this summer, all but one was seated. At the standing one (Eden Project, The Who, July) at least we had some railings to lean on (and it remained dry), but we both remarked it was unlikely we would go to anything at that venue again. Its a shame because we have been to many gigs over the last decade or so at the Eden Project because we now live within an hours drive.
It is such an amazing venue with ticket prices allowing entry the day of or day after to wander around. This year there were 'VIP' areas for an extra cost which provided seating and drinks. I think it would have to be a very special act indeed to entice us back and spend the extra.
The best seating arrangement was at the Principality Stadium in Wales where I saw Coldplay in June. The tickets entitled us to the flexibility of pitch standing and/or any seat in a lowest tier designated 'block'. It meant that a lot of the seating around us was empty and once everything had got underway we could move seats for a better view (I'm vertically challenged, so always a priority for me). My friend who purchased the tickets said they were the cheapest on offer!
As for food and drink, we don't bother with that at any venue. Besides my vintage bladder would mean me spending most of the time in the loos!!

Hmmm you may not regret missing RW. It has been sheeting it down with rain since 2.30 pm...I live just 2 miles from Sandringham.... umbrella anyone!

We are about 15miles away and I have been thinking of the poor people in that field!
I did hope that Sandringham had missed it but obviously not. It is fine now though.
They won’t allow umbrellas.🥴

PamelaJ1 Sat 26-Aug-23 18:30:57

I may be wrong about the umbrellas!

Primrose53 Sat 26-Aug-23 20:37:14

I am consoling myself tonight by watching all the Robbie stuff I recorded. There was a special RW night a couple of months ago.

PamelaJ1 Sun 27-Aug-23 10:56:13

We’re planning to arrive at about 7 tonight just when the rain stops.🤞

They are in breach of the Equality Act. You are not allowed to have a rule or regulation which makes it more difficult for a disabled person to comply. I would be posting something on farcebook and some of the other sites and asking them how they plan to make "reasonable adjustment".

People who can't stand for hours are not necessarily registered as disabled; it's just that we're getting older!

Most of these groups/singers would appeal to older people anyway and I don't understand why they won't allow chairs in an open-air venue.
We went to a big open-air concert in Australia and there were chairs already in place.

Maggiemaybe Sun 27-Aug-23 12:10:21

We went to an open air concert recently where seats were already set out. It bucketed down all evening and when people sought shelter under the arches surrounding the square they were told to take their seats or leave. Sometimes you just can’t win! grin

Open air concerts + British summer weather is not always a good combination!

Casdon Sun 27-Aug-23 12:21:03

SuperTinny is right, the Principality Stadium (although always called the Millennium Stadium still in my house) is a brilliant concert venue because it has all the infrastructure with massive TV screens, toilets, seating etc inbuilt, and by no means least, it has a retractable roof so if it rains you stay dry, a big plus in Wales!

I know. We went to see Tom Jones once and it poured all night. We took a big fishing umbrella and 2 small folding chairs but those days are gone.

A few years ago we saw Quo outdoors late August. It was the coldest night I can remember. Everybody had coats, hats, boots etc and Francis Rossi said they all had thermals on under their clothes.

The best night was The Proclaimers in July. One of those rare summer nights when it was still hot at 11 pm. That was fixed chairs though in an amphitheatre. Best night ever.

IClaudius Sun 27-Aug-23 13:29:46

The last open air concert I went to was to see Lulu. It had poured down with rain for days before the event and so the field was a quagmire. There was no chance of sitting anywhere because the mud was so deep and the portaloos were disgusting. Lulu was to be the last performer of the evening but we'd long given up by then.

Jan16 Sun 27-Aug-23 13:52:13

It will be very muddy at Sandringham tonight. We are 4 miles away and having a tremendous hail storm which has been going on for 20 minutes!

Primrose53 Sun 27-Aug-23 13:53:52

A friend just messaged to say RW was fantastic, a real showman as always. They arrived about 6pm and it took 2.5 hours to get in and over an hour to get out.

Allsorts Sun 27-Aug-23 14:03:16

I am sorry you couldn't goPrimrose, I wouldn’t be able to stand all that time either. An extra £150 mean paying three times the cost, I wouldn’t do it on principle and all that time going in and getting out I’d rather have teeth pulled.. Can’t think of anyone I would do that for except my family if they needed me. Hope you got your money back.

Unfortunately Norfolk roads are not built for an huge amount of extra cars and there will be delays and probably mega traffic jams! No motorways around here!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 27-Aug-23 15:13:18

Thank goodness!

downtoearth Sun 27-Aug-23 16:26:05

GSM Have you got the heavy rain and thunderstorms, the heavens have opend here in Mid Norfolk.
I read on my news feed this morning that an extra two hours was advised because of the traffic.
I dread to think of the congestion on the Hardwick roundabout at Kings Lynn, leading on to the A149,accident black spot at best of times, bikers and Bank holiday traffic use that route also for the coast.
I am home with a cuppa enjoying the peace.

Jan16 Sun 27-Aug-23 16:49:15

Downtoearth. If you know Knights Hill roundabout it was gridlocked at 11 this morning. They open the gates at Sandringham at 12 so I suppose everyone thought they would get there early. We are just a few miles away and yes the heavens opened!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 27-Aug-23 16:51:58

Yes, we’ve had heavy rain in north Norfolk and rumbles of thunder. It’s just starting to brighten up again. I feel sorry for people on holiday or who were looking forward to the long weekend. The plants will be happy though (and the weeds🙄).

I’m enjoying the peace too!
