Some time ago ( before I discovered the fount of wisdom and knowledge that is gransnet) one of the shrubs in my garden was in grave danger of being smothered and strangled by bindweed. Not knowing how to best resolve the problem , I turned to Google. Unfortunately I had a senior moment and had completely forgotten the name "bind weed". All I could remember was the name of its cultivated variety. So I happily, in all innocence and naivety googled " how to get rid of vigorous morning glory ". Well!!! How was I to know!!! What an education that turned out to be!!
Has anyone else had a Google revelation that they would rather not have had?

I once had a friend whose DH worked in the plastics industry. He was asked to do a presentation and was looking for info on the internet. Never, Ever type in 'plastic degradation' into a search engine, it gives nothing you could present to respectable people!blush

I once googled my single name and was dismayed at something that came up. I had to fill out all the forms to get them to remove the reference as a breach of privacy. It took about 6 months to get rid of it.

I had a prolific Golden Shower rose in the garden of my last house .
A builder asked me the name of it .
.
Knowing the other meaning of the name I hesitated and one of my children said ,
Come on mum , since when didn't you know the name of every plant in the garden ?

I have a beautiful yellow rose in my garden a visitor whom I was trying to impress admired it and asked the name, not quite sure I suggested we tried Google….whatever you do don’t ever put in Golden Shower without rose bush added on, I certainly learned something that day 😱

DM once went on a train tour in Canada with a group of retirees. Two of their number explained that one had ‘phoned the other asking if she’d like to see the Rockies. Thinking it must be a band she agreed & left it to her friend to make the arrangements. The bill came as quite a shock …….

My daughter had a black ish tongue, so I googled hairy black tongues
You would not believe what came up, good grief!! And I'm not easily shocked.
Turned out she'd overdone the Pepto Bismol trying to get rid of a hangover.
Lesson learnt.

The Head of School where I worked asked me to find some religious books suitable for children. So, I began with "hagiographies for children" and ended up with "Sisters of Mercy"...

I was trying to match up my dinner service and Googled "China match". I got some interesting offers from Chinese ladies.

When I worked for a local authority we had to be very careful what we looked up on the internet. A colleague at the next desk, an education consultant, was carrying out research for a history project and typed in ‘totem poles’. The results were very impressive but nothing to do with first generation people.

Many years ago, friends invited us to join them on a weekend break to Prague. They said to book the same flight with BMI Baby.
It sounded like Be My Baby.

It wasn't 🤣🤣🤣 I'm surprised I didn't have the Vice Squad hammering on the door. I nearly bleached the computer screen😅

I have not encountered that myself but I’m sure it will happen sooner or later… but this does bring to my attention how prevalent and easy it is to bring up online porn and nefarious “influencers” that children can access, just by Googling. Then there’s TikTok.

When elementary school aged children are able to view “adult content” off their smartphone or iPad… this is turning out to be a tragic interruption to their young emotional growth. If parents are not involved in reviewing or blocking what their kids are seeing - that’s another problem altogether too!

But in my caveman philosophy I’m dead set against young children (2-3 yrs!) being given any phones, pads or devices of any kind till high school. It’s sorrowful to see a mental decline of girls and boys grappling with self-esteem, anxiety, depression issues at such an early age.

This problem in America is a world-wide problem too. Unfortunately no one took the proper steps decades ago to help control this and now here we are. This is affecting our grandchildren. 😢

Thanks, Google - but no thanks‼️

ROFL reading these answers, btw.

A while ago someone on GN posted about resurfacing her driveway - and had googled 'hardcore'... She recommended never to do this.

My new boyfriend (late DH) had taken me to visit his rather proper aunt.
Looking out of the window at her bird table, he remarked, "What lovely great tits you have, aunt."
I'm ashamed to admit that I burst out laughing. Aunt was shocked, boyfriend embarrassed. Dead silence from both.
I couldn't face the aunt for ages, but she did become a beloved friend.

Years ago I was downloading music to make an upbeat summer playlist and in all innocence searched for the song Sex on the Beach. Well I certainly got what I asked for but none of it was musical.
I didn’t dare ask my children for help to get rid of it from my search history so had to enlist a more knowledgeable friend.

For a research project on images of the Mother of God I typed "Black Virgins" - did NOT find what I was looking for.

Teaching ten year olds, we watched the film version of the Edwardian children's book "The Secret Garden" both of which are suitable for that age group.

Unfortunately, one child liked the film so much that he googled it, but omitted to state it was a DVD or the author's name, and landed on a site that should never have got past the school's NetNanny!

In my previous life in Social Work Department when I worked with older adults someone donated a karioke machine without the instruction manual. At my work desk I googled the name and number of the machine which ended in xxxx!!!
After the initial shock, horror, my finger’s couldn’t move fast enough to get the images off the screen shock. I then had to explain to manager as I may have triggered an automatic inappropriate internet search warning!

A neighbouring farmer went on to Google to check prices of a new auger for his granary (vacuum type long pipe used for moving grain, it sucks up the grain and spits it out where you want it to be) having a mental block on the word ‘ auger’ he typed in ‘sucker blower’ and you can imagine what came into his screen ………

We were staying in a cottage in France and we had quite a lot of 'mésanges noires' - and wanted to Google them - so typed 'black tits'.

I can tell you it was a bit of a shock!

Way back, my dyslexic son, now 27 and recovered from the trauma, was set up with a Hotmail account by his aunt. The 'Hot Male' site wasn't what he intended when he logged in first time....

Many years ago my daughter was telling me about a camera in the jungle in Africa which she had been watching. I thought that I would like to see that so googled 'wildlife in Africa'. Big mistake!

lemsip

yes . I had a shock when I looked up the band Mcfly several years ago for my grandchildren. .... I just entered the word Mcfly and was shocked at what appeared and deleted quickly hoping it wouldn't stay on my computer..

I then typed in adding band.

I don't get this, just googled and the band Mcfly came up, what is the other meaning?

My dog once barked at an angler. I apologised and said ‘I think he’s worried about your tackle over your shoulder’ 🤭
