King Charles- One Year On.

So a year has passed since the death of Queen Elizabeth 11.

That news generated much discussion on GN, and we wondered how Charles would fit as King. Big shoes to fill.

Well., it all seems to have gone pretty well. He and Camilla stepped into their new roles with apparent ease, bringing a new informality but still retaining dignity and tradition. Ably supported by the Wales, Anne and the Edinburghs.

I think the late queen would be proud and relieved.

Talking of President, did you hear the dreadful booing and whistling President Macron received at the rugby in the Stade de France last night? He could hardly speak, he looked so uncomfortable.

Grany Sat 09-Sept-23 09:39:08

Our President would be a parliamentary president not like in France where Macron has more power.

Our President would hold the government to account, with all the wrong doings of this Tory government Charles has not, will only do what the PM asks.

Callistemon21, Henetha, who do you suppose Grany envisages as this paragon of virtue?
How will she be elected?
By whom?
Funded how?
Who will draw up the job description?
Who will be asked to pay for the election?

Grany Sun 10-Sept-23 00:08:10

This person could be anyone from the many talented people of this country, we could be spoilt for choice.
By a vote
We the people
Funded by the treasury as is Charles
There will be a written constitution, with laws specific to job of Head of State.
Same as how people get elected now.

There is polling showing fall in support for a monarchy especially from the younger generation. When polling shows 50% its game on.

I think he is doing a great job- I would no longer describe myself as a ‘republican’ because he is definitely a better choice than anyone here!

Grany Sun 10-Sept-23 00:44:55

What has he done, had himself a coronation cost a fortune, got a 40million pay rise, did not pay inheritance tax. No modernisation of monarchy it is the most expensive. Monarchy only help themselves do nothing for the people of this country. They spend tax payers money daily on their own travel homes holidays. Waste of space and money.

why don't you say what you really think.

You aren’t guaranteed a good monarch are you? In the past we’ve had mad/ bad/arrogant/sexual deviants as monarchs and more. It’s a random gene pool. If you were setting up a new country you’d never suggest they invent a royal family

That’s true. It applies in so many families. There’s no guarantee that good ancestry means good descendants or bad ancestry means bad descendants.

The RF started by being the most powerful people and using that power to gain more power, just like all the non-RF moguls do now.

If you were setting up a new country you’d never suggest they invent a royal family
No you wouldn’t, but . . .
It would still be the people with most money who would be at the top, e.g. in the US.
They would still do everything Grany et al accuse the RF of doing and they’d still expect the poor to pay for it.

The great thing about an elected head of state is that their actions, behaviour and public spending are all open to proper scrutiny, and if they do something wrong they can be sacked. So unlike Prince Charles, who ignores the unwritten rule that he shouldn't become political, in a republic the head of state could be challenged if they step out of line.

I will add monarchy gets lots of exemptions from the law, are unaccountable.
And recently the Met is not going to investigate Charles Cash for Honours

And files about Andrew locked away until 2065
Corrupt institution

Thinking that an elected head of
State can be held to account while in office is blinkered. Take a look around the world.

Grany Sun 10-Sept-23 11:15:19

There are lots of good republics that work well See Ireland Germany Iceland etc

Telegraph

Caribbean nations to formally demand slavery reparations from Royal family

National reparations commissions want to bypass the UK Government and pursue financial payments from British institutions directly

Well Charles got £650 million inheritance didn’t pay a penny unlike everybody else. A lot of that would be inherited from slavery.

Anniebach Sun 10-Sept-23 11:43:33

Wales should push for an apology from England
