I think it’s nonsense to make money for the card companies
Thankfully none of my 7 have caught onto it

Never heard of it.

I kind of like the idea BUT as grandparents are also parents and we have Mothering Sunday and Fathers Day it does seem a little overkill !

I’ve told this before but it still makes me chuckle. DH and I went to a Grandparents’ Day KS1 assembly once where the children presented their doting grandparents with buns and cards they’d made. DGS1 was blushing as he handed us a card with the greeting “Best grandparents” over a picture of a blond, curly headed woman and a man with glasses. He didn’t really need to follow it up with “It’s not for you”, as it was patently obvious it was the other lot. Good job we’re not sensitive! grin

No one has to support this day unless they wish to but if it helps one or more lonely grandparents to see or hear from their love ones it is worth mentioning. A visit or phone call would I’m sure make someone’s day. I’m lucky as I see my little grandchildren every week.

I'm waiting for 'my neighbour's budgie' day.
Hallmark day says it all - Hallmark make greetings cards.

Yes, I think that was Georgesgran’s point!

The following is from the Sun Life website www.sunlife.co.uk/articles-guides/your-life/what-is-grandparents-day-and-when-is-it-in-the-uk/

“Originating in America, Grandparents’ Day became a recognised holiday in 1978 following Marian McQuade’s campaign to create a day to celebrate grandparents.

After volunteering in a nursing home, she discovered that many of the residents got little to no visitors. This inspired her to create a day that highlights the importance of the older generation to the younger generations.

On 3rd August 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation saying that the day is intended “to honour grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.”

Grandparents’ Day was first introduced in the UK in 1990 by Age Concern. Since October 2008, it’s been celebrated on the first Sunday of October every year.”

I find the rest of the page cringey, bordering on the patronising

Also known as Hallmark day.

M0nica Thu 21-Sept-23 13:34:29

Is this an American invention being peddled in the UK to encourage people to buy cards and gifts?

Oreo Thu 21-Sept-23 13:11:07

😂 yeah I can just imagine.
I’ll def tell my DD’s tho as there may be a box of chocs in it, you never know.

silverlining48 Thu 21-Sept-23 13:03:34
