Firstly let me say that no way hosay is this post a Woe is me post.
Right, so I have M.S and am starting to find walking round our local Asda hard work.. soooo I decided to take along a little camping stool so when I needed to sit, I had something to sit on ( either that or park my derriere on a crate of beans )
The time arrives when I am needing to sit and rest for 5....6 minutes, out of my trolley comes my camping stool, I set it up alongside the shelves of biscuits. Picture the scene.... there is moi sat on the stool in the biscuit aisle, while various shoppers pass with their trolley's, 99.9% smile the other 1% looks at me like I have lost the plot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( hahahaha )
I don't want to get a delivery nor use 1 of the store scooters, I need to walk and use my legs and if it means resting on my camping stool then so be it.....
My friend said *Thank goodness you didn't put up your tent and start cooking a BBQ" hahahahahaha.
So my question is... what lengths have you gone to to rectify matters?

(37 Posts)Serendipity, so far I have not had to make any alternative arrangements. However I applaud your way of taking a rest in the supermarket, good on you ! If I were to sit on a camping stool I am not sure my old pins would allow me to rise with ease!!!!! Camping stool at the ready and why not - biscuit aisle is as good a place as any 😊!
Good for you at least you are making the effort to go out still. I would probably do the same if my knees would allow it.
I think if I was in your situation, I’d have groceries delivered - then go for a walk in the park / woods / countryside taking the stool with me. But then I dislike food shopping and I love being outside!
Last week I was at a weekend reunion about 16 of us all roughly my age 73 . Some had mobility issues and several like me joint replacements or waiting for one. I was the only one using a stick. I use a hiking stick when I’m in an area I’m not too familiar with as my balance isn’t great . It really helps and gives me confidence to take bigger strides thus improving my balance. I wasn’t exactly laughed at but there were some comments about little old ladies and sticks which was annoying, especially as one of the group did fall on the cobbled street. Go for whatever keeps you out and about for as long as you can . I’m grateful for all the nice benches in our high street!
The camping stool is a very good idea. We should keep going any way we can and I have sat on rocks, fallen trees and anywhere with a
flatish surface when my legs needed a rest on my walks.
I have sometimes ended up with a damp derriere though.
Less than mobile after surgery Mr C was given a stick that unfolds into a seat. There’s a sort of tripod that comes out at the bottom to keep it steady. He uses it now. When he doesn’t want it I’ll take it when I’m having a bad fibro day and if I need to us it to sit down on the way round a supermarket thr so be it. Needs must I think. Good for you serendipity.

I was about to say that!
Brilliant solution.. I was only thinking today that shops no longer seem to have chairs for customers whereas it was common practise when I was young...
Great idea Serendipity22! Not only have you dealt with your problem in a sensible way, you've also brightened up the day for the 99.9% of fellow shoppers. As for the 0.1%, it sounds as if something different is no bad thing for them to experience! More power to your camping stool, and perhaps you should give serious thought to the barbecue...
Serendipity. Bloody good for you! ⭐️
Yes, bravo- the right attitude. Of course mobility scooters can be really useful, but I do think it is a mistake to get one 'too early' and to stop moving- in fact the worst thing one can do.
In admiration x
What a brilliant uplifting post - wish you all the best Serendipityxx
Whoaaaaa 😲 .... mega thank you to everyone xx.... the post WAS intended to put across the - when needs must and what is yours? Then I read the replies and they are all absolutely lovely and positive and its left me like WHOAAAAAA BLIMEY !!!!! THANK YOU ....
I suppose I should be thanking the camping stool too hahahahaha.....
Next time you see anything to do with camping, think of me sat on my little stool up the biscuit aisle..
😂🤣😅
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you xx
WELLDONE Dont give up keep going as long as possible
How about a frame which has a seat and attaches to the shopping trolley
That's brilliant. Well done you. And it took courage. So congratulations. 😁
Well done you for keeping going!
I am short and have problems with my shoulders, one from a previous sports injury, the other sometimes from RA. For those occasions I carry a folding grabber in my supermarket shopping bags. It comes in handy for reaching my favourite multigrain bread which is always on the top shelf!
What a lovely positive post . My late fil had mobility issues due to arthritis. He didn’t drive , so after walking to his local Asda he needed a rest, they had seats and a staff member would take his list and do his shopping for him . Living alone it wasn’t a long list and he didn’t want it delivered as he wanted to get out of the house . The staff were lovely and happy to have a chat to him .
What a positive post - thank you.
On a humourus note, maybe you could take a flask of tea, and tell the 1% you are an official biscuit tester?
I have various medical problems the one that affects me every day is my very bad back. If you have ever seen Waiting for God the Stephanie Cole charactor is me! I walk when I can but often it is not possible, and I have now moved to a ground floor flat . Where I previously lived the Tesco had 2 disability scooters in a larger store. I cannot lift well either so using that I could get around , make my own choices and take 3 or 4 bags so that the checkout people could spread the load and then not carrying large bags when I get home. Went to the Tesco here and asked for the scooter and was told that the store was too small to have one. It is not a tiny place but the normal size. I am always prepared to make a compromise and suggested that they could get one and I would definitely not visit at busy times. The manager was most unhelpful with a poor attitude, so after 3 weeks of no effort being made at all I went online to the higher ups, and as I told them disabled people spend money too and a scooter enables me to browse and look at things so would probably spend more anyway. Result ? Now got a scooter there for use of anyone who needs it. Not only disabled people but for example if you have had a broken leg or just come out of hospital etc. I do occasionally have a delivery but I especially want to chose my own fruit and vegetables and see what bargains and ideas as I go round the shop.
I've found myself in a similar situation more than one, so I'm looking into getting a Rollator, 3 wheeled push along WITH A SEAT!
Great idea, wouldn't it be lovely if these big stores could provide the odd chair littered around the store especially for this purpose
I have a three wheeled cargo bike, as I no longer feel safe on an ordinary bike and bought one with an electric motor to boot.
Cheap reading glasses in coat pocket when shopping, as I can no longer read small print.
I find myself having to ask people, especially the young, to speak up or speak more slowly on the phone, but haven't yet gone to the trouble of having my hearing checked.
I am considering having the front garden paved as weeding and mowing lawns, which I hate doing anyhow, is getting more and more of a drag, and we have an arrangement with a schoolboy to carry logs inside when we have them delivered in return for pocket money (amount settled in consultation with his parents) and I have asked a local handyman to clean the gutters later this autumn.
Not quite the same thing but....when heavily pregnant and having sciatica I stood for some time in a taxi queue bent forward double to ease the pain. Did feel a bit silly, but then I was young and foolish, now I am old and wouldn't care less if it happened again.
Wow.... huge thank you's for your replies and do you know what! its all spurred me on to email allllll the large supermarkets and raise the issue of seats ... they will say that they do have seats at the bottom of the tills ( Asda and Morrisons ) and despite the fact that is BRILLIANT, you have to abandon your trolley and make your way to the seats when really they would be of GREAT need up an aisle.....
I'M ON IT RIGHT NOW... I REPORT BACK ANY PROGRESS..... ( Its in their benefit to install the seats.... they would get a lot more shoppers ..... )
😇😇😇😇😇😇😇.
Ooooo us Grannetter's may change the WHOLE concept of shopping... shock 😮
