Massive hike in car insurance

My insurance needs renewing shortly. Last year fully comp was £292. Renewal this year has leapt up to £475. Nothing has changed, no claims or accidents, nothing.
I have been looking online this morning fir alternatives and renewal prices are all very high. The highest £929. What?!!!

I have a 10 year old fiesta , and have always paid less than£300 for the same insurance. I did not expect to find the results online are all over £500 up to £950.
I phoned one company direct and was told they do not even cover my postcode. A market town outside London, not the Wild West.
Has anyone else noticed this massive hike? Or is it just me.
I am in shock.

There was a thread about this a few days ago.

It may be that you have just passed or are coming up to a significant birthday?

Are you still insuring the car for its original value or its current value, which is all you’d get if it was written off? That makes a difference to the premium.

GSM The computer decided the value, which is low, and no special birthday 🥳 coming up. Will check out the thread you mention. I am still in shock. Last year £292, this year more than doubled, with no reason whatsoever.

Our recent car insurance was £174.80, up from about £134 last year. Nothing like what OP is quoting of course.

The best I could get doing online checks was £162.

Nevertheless, I rang my insurance company and asked them to better my quote.

Without even asking what other quotes I had been given, they reduced it to £142.98, which I accepted.

I used to ask why they couldn’t give me the lower price in the first place, but don’t bother now. They just rely on you accepting the new amount.

Which insurance company are you with calendargirl.? That sounds much more up my street .

Mine goes up because I do hardly any miles, only driving locally. Maybe your postcode has had a lot of thefts.

It has caused more insurance scams where people insure cars at a relative's address in a better postcode.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 02-Oct-23 17:35:10

You could probably get a better deal based on limited mileage Theexwife. Your premium shouldn’t be more expensive because you don’t drive far.

Mine too was more, I phoned them and had a moan. On asking why as I had no claims no changes etc. I was told its due to the cost of parts, which could be true as everyone I know who has ordered a New car has nearly 6 months plus to wait before delivery due to shortage of parts, one friend has over a year to wait.

I did get £75 off my renewal, so why didn't they do that in the first place? also did a on line check, turned out mine was the cheapest (Direct line) after all.

Did you try One Call? They hiked my insurance up to more than double in a quote letter... I called them and actually got a new quote that was less than the previous year! These companies hope that you won't notice and I can't help but wonder if now some of them are just trying to get on the 'cost of living' bandwagon.

It’s a game we have to play every year or so.

Try Dial Direct. I've been with them for a couple of years now. Before that, I'd been with Direct Line, seen the premium creep up then leap up.

I drive a 14 year old Honda Jazz 1.3L petrol engine. Admittedly, I have not had to claim so I cannot vouch for how good or bad DD are should that be necessary.

Car insured for market value which is £3,500. Total cost under £190. £100 base cost plus add ons as in graphic and an admin fee. It doesn't include windscreen replacement. I’m late 60s, long no claims record and a low risk postcode.

Spooky - SinLaw rang this morning to say her premium has doubled - up to £754 for a 66 plate Fiesta! She’s 77 and in Cheshire.
BF says her premium has risen 52% for her sports car, she’s 68.

Greyduster Mon 02-Oct-23 19:15:14

I got a shock too, looking online for prospective premiums. In all cases the increase is a minimum of eighty per cent - over a hundred percent in some cases. My DS works for a very large insurance company and even with their friends and family discount it is a ridiculous quote. I do very little mileage in a car with a 1500 engine and have nine years no claims. But I’m 77 next month and I think that’s the clincher. I asked my current insurer for a quote but because it’s not due until next month, they won’t give me any idea of what they will offer me.

Grammaretto Mon 02-Oct-23 19:17:40

I just had a refund! I altered my policy today and added another driver. It seems that she has done us a favour.
It's now £226

Opal Mon 02-Oct-23 19:20:21

I started a thread on this a few weeks ago due to a 55% hike on my insurance premium quote. I managed to get a bit of a reduction but still paid over 35% more than last year, best I could get.

Georgesgran Mon 02-Oct-23 21:36:46

Yes -Grammaretto - adding another named driver (no points) to your policy will save a few pounds.
DD2 also works in insurance and says the cost has soared.

Mr C is now 80. We decided that means think of a number and double it for insurance.

Budget Insurance.

silverlining48 Tue 03-Oct-23 07:44:54

Thank you, will check it out.

Katie59 Tue 03-Oct-23 07:47:30

Mine has doubled too, partly the cost of repairing increasingly complex cars, partly personal injury claims, if you have a premium with a small increase you’re very lucky.

Allsorts Tue 03-Oct-23 07:57:58

Mine doubled, I shopped around and the cheapest I could find was a 25% hike but my current insurance matched it. Still £600

shysal Tue 03-Oct-23 08:01:30

A 94 year old friend has been quoted £1,600! She was pleased that she found a quote elsewhere of £1,400! I suppose it must be due to her age.
Mine was around £300 including breakdown cover.

silverlining48 Tue 03-Oct-23 08:18:08

You might get a nasty surprise when you try insure next time Shysal.

I’m with Saga, the renewal this year was £4 more than last year, so £174.00.
Value of my car is checked against second hand car sales sites online and I have reduced mileage as it’s not our only car, of 5000 miles, although I rarely do half that (at the moment MrOops car is waiting for some work to be done so more miles this year) I have both daughters and MrOops on as well.
I’m over 70 have full no claims bonus and the cost has stayed at this level for some years and the car is parked off road.

I think though that our postcode is a ‘good’ one and helps to keep the cost down.

Mr C is now 80. We decided that means think of a number and double it for insurance.

We have both turned 80 this year and our insurance went up by £125. My daughter-in-law’s father found his insurance went down significantly when he added his children as additional drivers.

Marrion Tue 03-Oct-23 10:51:00

I'm not the only one! Insurance has doubled, quote for £848 - but will remain the same for the next 3 years (Saga) A very good policy so I am tempted to remain with them. Milage limit of 5000 miles per year. Son and daughter in law additional drivers - this does reduce the premium. Mid 80's so I assume age comes into it.
I have looked at other providers but the cheapest is £100 less but not as good cover.
