Massive hike in car insurance

My insurance needs renewing shortly. Last year fully comp was £292. Renewal this year has leapt up to £475. Nothing has changed, no claims or accidents, nothing.
I have been looking online this morning fir alternatives and renewal prices are all very high. The highest £929. What?!!!

I have a 10 year old fiesta , and have always paid less than£300 for the same insurance. I did not expect to find the results online are all over £500 up to £950.
I phoned one company direct and was told they do not even cover my postcode. A market town outside London, not the Wild West.
Has anyone else noticed this massive hike? Or is it just me.
I am in shock.

In the new Martin Lewis podcast out today, he discusses car insurance increases; tips for getting the best quote and what to consider doing to avoid increases further down the line. Best tip is when to do the comparisions. 21 days before renewal gets the best prices. Listen here:

Got mine today, I changed my car 5 mths ago from a diesel to a petrol but smaller newer car and paid £40 extra so worked out at £370 for the year now they want £702!!! 😳 I’ll be checking the comparison sites at the weekend.

Sorry Budget was so expensive silverlining, the quote they gave you was shocking.

Our car is over 10 years old, we only do a low mileage and I suppose we live in a hopefully ‘safe’ area.

Yes, our quote is very good.

Now back and checked that it was calendar girl who got the really good deal with budget insurance. Thank you.
I have a old small car low mileage clean history yet their premium got me was £1500 before extras,
You did well calendar. Lucky you. grin

My insurance also doubled this year despite years of no claims..
I moved to Saga but only got a £50 reduction I'm going to sell my car this year I think..

silverlining48 Thu 05-Oct-23 13:17:00

Thanks fir all responses. I rang budget insurance recommended here as being reasonable , sorry forget who and am just on way out, and their basic quote before extras was £1500. What! ..?
We have caved in and reinsured with our old insurance company at a mere 75% increase from last year.
It’s shocking.

One of ours went down by about £20, one went up, about £40, £370 and £430, fully comp.
Spent a couple of hours on comparison sites.

Mine had gone up by more than 100%. I spoke to the rep who said it was nothing to do with my age, but to do with the number of thefts, accidents, state of roads in our area and the type of car (smallish).
He assured me there was nothing he could do and refused to put me through to someone more senior.
I went to compare the meerkat and found that my insurer was one of the cheapest, at about half what they were going to charge me.
I rang the firm back and asked to take out a new policy. The new rep took my details, then said, “but you’ve already got a policy with us.”
Yes I have, but I’m not renewing it. I just want an policy at the your Meerkat advertised price.
In return for not going through Meerkat, I’m paying even less than their quote on the Meerkat site, though I don’t get a year of free meals or cinema tickets.
Sharp practice? I think so.

I was caught out by this recently but was given some interesting advice regarding price comparison sites. When you use one there may be many companies you have not heard of at the beginning but simply scroll down to the first one you recognise and try it. Obviously doesn't work in all cases but did ok for me.

I'm not the only one! Insurance has doubled, quote for £848 - but will remain the same for the next 3 years (Saga) A very good policy so I am tempted to remain with them. Milage limit of 5000 miles per year. Son and daughter in law additional drivers - this does reduce the premium. Mid 80's so I assume age comes into it.
I have looked at other providers but the cheapest is £100 less but not as good cover.

Mr C is now 80. We decided that means think of a number and double it for insurance.

We have both turned 80 this year and our insurance went up by £125. My daughter-in-law’s father found his insurance went down significantly when he added his children as additional drivers.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 03-Oct-23 10:28:02

I’m with Saga, the renewal this year was £4 more than last year, so £174.00.
Value of my car is checked against second hand car sales sites online and I have reduced mileage as it’s not our only car, of 5000 miles, although I rarely do half that (at the moment MrOops car is waiting for some work to be done so more miles this year) I have both daughters and MrOops on as well.
I’m over 70 have full no claims bonus and the cost has stayed at this level for some years and the car is parked off road.

I think though that our postcode is a ‘good’ one and helps to keep the cost down.

You might get a nasty surprise when you try insure next time Shysal.

A 94 year old friend has been quoted £1,600! She was pleased that she found a quote elsewhere of £1,400! I suppose it must be due to her age.
Mine was around £300 including breakdown cover.

Allsorts Tue 03-Oct-23 07:57:58

Mine doubled, I shopped around and the cheapest I could find was a 25% hike but my current insurance matched it. Still £600

Katie59 Tue 03-Oct-23 07:47:30

Mine has doubled too, partly the cost of repairing increasingly complex cars, partly personal injury claims, if you have a premium with a small increase you’re very lucky.

silverlining48 Tue 03-Oct-23 07:44:54

Thank you, will check it out.

Yes -Grammaretto - adding another named driver (no points) to your policy will save a few pounds.
DD2 also works in insurance and says the cost has soared.

Opal Mon 02-Oct-23 19:20:21

I started a thread on this a few weeks ago due to a 55% hike on my insurance premium quote. I managed to get a bit of a reduction but still paid over 35% more than last year, best I could get.

Grammaretto Mon 02-Oct-23 19:17:40

I just had a refund! I altered my policy today and added another driver. It seems that she has done us a favour.
It's now £226

Greyduster Mon 02-Oct-23 19:15:14

I got a shock too, looking online for prospective premiums. In all cases the increase is a minimum of eighty per cent - over a hundred percent in some cases. My DS works for a very large insurance company and even with their friends and family discount it is a ridiculous quote. I do very little mileage in a car with a 1500 engine and have nine years no claims. But I’m 77 next month and I think that’s the clincher. I asked my current insurer for a quote but because it’s not due until next month, they won’t give me any idea of what they will offer me.

Georgesgran Mon 02-Oct-23 19:05:49

Spooky - SinLaw rang this morning to say her premium has doubled - up to £754 for a 66 plate Fiesta! She’s 77 and in Cheshire.
BF says her premium has risen 52% for her sports car, she’s 68.

Caravansera Mon 02-Oct-23 18:15:07

It’s a game we have to play every year or so.

Try Dial Direct. I've been with them for a couple of years now. Before that, I'd been with Direct Line, seen the premium creep up then leap up.

I drive a 14 year old Honda Jazz 1.3L petrol engine. Admittedly, I have not had to claim so I cannot vouch for how good or bad DD are should that be necessary.

Car insured for market value which is £3,500. Total cost under £190. £100 base cost plus add ons as in graphic and an admin fee. It doesn't include windscreen replacement. I’m late 60s, long no claims record and a low risk postcode.
