I had a sore throat last Sunday which lasted a couple of days, then lots of sneezing. Started coughing three days ago and got laryngitis. The coughing is wearing me out. I am drinking lots of lemon and honey but now wondering about buying some Boots Mucus Cough Relief medicine tomorrow?? I didn't think cough medicine worked but now, at 75, think perhaps my system needs some help. I had to cancel childcare for grandchildren this weekend.. hoping to be well enough not to cancel Friday. I think I caught it from them the little germ machines!

I have Doxycicline along with steroids in my COPD rescue pack. They are one of the few antibiotics, which do not cotraindicate with my heart meds.
I won't hesitate to take them if necessary.

I had an awful cough last year and in desperation I bought Broncho Stop from my local chemist.

As soon as the tickle started I sucked one and it stopped it escalating.

I have recommended them to several people and the also said they helped.

I use Broncho stop because it works on both dry and mucus coughs and sometimes I’m not sure which one I’ve actually got. Also use a Beconase nasal spray and a Saline nasal spray. And put Vicks on the soles of my feet.. I decided to be proactive this winter and I’ve got all of those items in my medicine cabinet as I usually end up having to go to the chemists when I’ve already got an infection.

Despite the disinterest you have the means of helping yourself Jeevee so I would xx

A persistent cough needs medical attention. If your cough can be treated with home remedies, or a cough suppressant ,that's okay but perhaps you need a more active treatment.

Thanks..I will try them. I have never had an antibiotic which requires you to stand up when you take them.

Doxycycline is great for chest infections but it's a vicious wee thing!

I had it in March, and just felt faintly gruey with it, as antibiotics can make one feel.
Got some last Tuesday: almost immediately I could feel my chest clear but by Friday I felt dreadful, and was back to coughing my head off. I gave up Saturday morning. (Discovered a cough is a known side effect).
Result! Chesty cough gone, Doxy cough gone. Sorted.

It does the job IMHO but takes no prisoners. Good luck!

Not to everyone's taste, but I like Covonia cough medicine and think it works well!
Also, Benylin.
I hope you feel better soon, Jeevee. If not, do go and see your doctor!!

There’s a throat spray you can get at the pharmacy - sorry, I can’t remember what it’s called but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It’s got anaesthetic in it and as well as soothing the throat, it also calms the cough reflex for a while. That might give you a bit of respite from it.

Your post brought back memories of a nasty chest infection our whole household came down with back in 2013. Our GP was on the point of having me admitted to hospital but said he would try doxycycline first. I think vicious is the right word for it - it made me really sick at first, but boy did it work and I avoided a hospital stay.

Jeevee sitting upright for 30 mins or so after taking it is fine. You don’t need to stand up. It’s just to reduce the likelihood of it giving you heartburn/reflux.
