Boris Johnson is to become a presenter on GB News.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 31-Oct-23 19:00:07

This is typical of GB News and its ethos. Publicising one’s charitable giving isn’t done.

Primrose53 Tue 31-Oct-23 19:02:16

GB NEWS did really well in the TV awards this year

www.gbnews.com/news/gb-news-breakfast-wins-tric-awards-2023#

Plus Nigel Farage won Best News Presenter.
Anne Diamond has been awarded the OBE too.

I hope we all contribute when we buy our poppies.

No need to state the obvious GSM 😏
I might be wrong, but I don’t see Sky or the venerated BBC doing anything of this ilk..🤷‍♀️

Obviously the BBC buys a lot of poppies as all their presenters wear them.

They just don't publicise the fact.

They do, however, always report the launch of the Poppy Appeal.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 31-Oct-23 20:09:02

Indeed they do. Charity should be given quietly, without a fanfare of publicity,. People are easily duped by publicity.

Primrose53 Tue 31-Oct-23 20:47:42

It would be a bit difficult to launch a fundraiser and not publicise it. £140,000 is a fantastic amount to raise in such a short time. Hardly a fanfare gsm.

What exactly is the difference between this initiative and Children in Need, or Comic Relief for example which have raised many millions? It’s hardly a new concept, or a relatively large amount of donations?

The BBC do quite a lot for CHILDREN IN NEED - for children across the UK.

And SKY, in 2022...

Sky has made a number of commitments to help the UK through this challenging period including supporting NHS frontline staff with unlimited access to data and calls; prioritising the vulnerable and those self-isolating with alternative methods of communication where we cannot carry out critical repairs and prioritising the needs of vulnerable customers and key workers through our contact centres. Sky Group Chief Executive, Jeremy Darroch, will also donate 100% of his salary to COVID-19-related charities for the duration of the crisis.

But, would any other organisation have raised so much for the poppy appeal? I can’t imagine the Beeb wanting anything to do with the British Legion either.
GB News may be marmite but it’s going from strength to strength when it was said it wouldn’t last the year.

This is so illogical. Does anybody call GB News watchers haters on the basis that they don’t support the BBC Children in Need - or is that in some way I don’t understand a less worthy cause than the Poppy Appeal?

Oreo Tue 31-Oct-23 22:48:06

Why would GB News watchers not support the BBC Children In Need Casdon ?
I watch and enjoy GB News at various times of day and evening and support the poppy appeal, children in need and many other charities.
What Shinamae means is that GB News is becoming more popular and those who hate it really don’t like that fact.

Nothing at all to do with that! you read through the threads on this subject, and you will find a lot of hate and disparaging remarks for GB news and it’s presenters.
I cannot stand BBC, so I just don’t watch it, I would not dream of running it down on a thread..

Please do stop virtue signalling about GB News and the Poppy Appeal.

Out on the streets are many Poppy Appeal Collectors, young and old, in wind and rain, the stalwarts who have done this year after year, others delivering boxes to schools and businesses, some of these people are in their 80s and even 90s, then comes the count, no mean task.

Sitting in a warm studio and appealing takes little real effort.

Oreo Tue 31-Oct-23 23:07:08

It’s pointing out that GB News is doing some good, and yes of course the people who go door to door are doing great work giving up their time in that way.
GB News has become the DM for the many people who want to disparage it, most of who have prob only given it a view for ten mins. Their breakfast programme for instance is really very good and much better than the BBC or ITV at that time.
I pick and choose the presenters and their guests that I want to watch or avoid but like the great variety of attitudes and politics on the shows.

Callistemon21 Tue 31-Oct-23 23:17:14

They don't go door to door, it's not allowed.
If they're lucky they can stand in the draughty foyer of a supermarket.

I don't care about what GB News is like but claiming they are raising some money for the RBL Poppy Appeal somehow makes them virtuous is something I find very annoying.

maddyone Tue 31-Oct-23 23:18:29

The BBC make a fuss about their Children in Need project. They started advertising it some weeks ago and I think it’s due in November. I’ve heard that much of the promised donations on the night never actually materialise. Some must though, as various projects do appear to receive contributions.
If GBNews want to ask for donations to something charitable, I have no problem with that. And the Poppy Appeal is a very worthy cause. I won’t be contributing to their scheme though, I will buy a poppy and wear it.

A woman came to our door just last night, and we were pleased as we hadn’t had the chance to buy our poppies yet.
She had all the right ‘stuff’ poppies, pins and collecting box.

Oreo Tue 31-Oct-23 23:25:57

I must try and find out if she was the real thing, but sure looked it.

Oreo Tue 31-Oct-23 23:49:42

Just did a bit of googling, it seems that although the British Legion removed a page about door to door selling through a promotional company they had been using in 2016, many small organisations / villages are still asking for more door to door volunteers to sell poppies to raise money for the BL.
Phew, glad we weren’t diddled on the door step.😁

Johnson has failed at every job he has ever had.

So his move to GBNews seems very appropriate -

Doodledog Wed 01-Nov-23 08:23:25

I haven’t seen much of GB News - I watched a bit of it when the Schofield scandal broke - and laughed at the number of times the word ‘woke’ was inserted into unlikely sentences. It felt like a parody.

It’s not my bag, as it’s very one-sided, and I’m so tired of division and the way anyone who questions anything is a ‘hater’ or deserving of derision. People are entitled to hold different views and perspectives, and sniping (as opposed to discussion and debate) about that is tedious.

Each to her own though, and much as I loathe Johnson for all sorts of things, he can work a crowd. He was funny on HIGNFY (although apparently his blustering ‘persona’ was because he turned up unprepared) and personable on Who Do You Think You Are. The ‘upper class twit’ act doesn’t impress me at all, but it does appeal to many, and I did find his Beano character act with its ‘Golly! ‘I say!’ ‘Oh, how splendid!’ interjections quite amusing. He’s much more suited to that than to ‘running’ the country.

As a personality presenter (which is what he is - even his columns are not journalism) he’s well placed to know the gossip, and indisciplined enough to let strategic ’gems’ slip, so he’ll be popular.

I won’t be watching, but I look forward to the headlines grin.

... she probably was the "real thing".

Unless she'd stolen the poppies etc and was pocketing the proceeds which I think is highly unlikely - there are easier ways of scamming people than trudging from door-to-door in 'undecided' weather conditions for what more than likely amounts to £ 'peanuts', not to mention the likelihood that there are households who would not answer the door, or decline if they did.

A thankless task, which only the truly dedicated would undertake.

Oreo Wed 01-Nov-23 09:55:36

Well Dickens that’s what I thought, but had to check as it’s true that the BL don’t endorse door to door collections ( since 2016). There was also the possibility that she was a genuine person trying to raise funds for what she thought was the BL.Which does happen in certain cases. Also the poppies were the usual type with plastic stalks and I just read that this years poppies are all paper.

maddyone Wed 01-Nov-23 11:29:22

I saw some poppies in M+S yesterday that were the usual type with the plastic stalks, but I heard on the news that although the poppies will be all paper this year, they will be using up left over stock of the old ones too. I didn’t buy one yesterday because I want to get an all paper one.

Callistemon21 Wed 01-Nov-23 11:33:44

Yes, they are using up old stocks as well as selling the new paper ones.
