Old fashioned pick me up

Good morning everyone, I have been through the mill recently with broken foot and various other health issues, and I’m just wondering if any of you ladies know of a good old fashioned tonic.

Metatone from the local pharmacy helped my mum recover from an illness - it's a blend of iron and vitamins. We put it in fruit squash for her, but I quite like the taste of it by itself.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Bio Strath is our family go-to.

While I can see you are asking about medication/tonics, don’t forget the therapeutic effects of getting out in the fresh air (if you can, as I see you’ve had a foot problem). You’ll get vitD and outdoor exercise is often suggested to those feeling a bit ‘down’. I know several GNs report on Health Walks.
Hope you feel better soon.

I would like nothing better than to go out for a walk in this crisp sunshine, but unfortunately I have to stay off my foot for three months as I had an ankle fusion a couple of days ago

Poor you. I’m in a similar position. Winter drawing on doesn’t help either does it?

I’ll read replies with interest if you don’t mind me piggybacking on your thread

I can only sympathize with your enforced housebound situation Lesley60. I had a knee op many years ago and had it not been for my DDs (before babies) taking me out in the car for a change of scenery, I think I’d have gone mad!
I hope you can get out and about when you’re well enough. X

Thank you for your lovely replies, I can’t go out for a drive as it’s to difficult to get to the car
Quokka I don’t mind you piggybacking at all 😂 the more we can help each other the better

Here are some flowers to cheer you up x

Do you have a garden? Even in the Winter I love to sit out and read or just have a coffee, wrapped in a warm blanket/throw/coat with a warm hat on. So long as it's not raining. We have a number of bird feeders and like watching them flitting back and fore. And there are less mowers out now so it's quieter too.

I use Metatone too.
Helps me. Doesnt doing anything for someone else I know.

Floradix is good too iron plus B vitamins, but perhaps you should have your haemoglobin levels checked before you take iton supplements.

AreWeThereYet's suggestion of sitting in the garden if you have one, warmly wrapped up, is a good one. It's a bright sunny day here for a change 🙂
You won't get Vitamin D from the sun in the winter so taking a supplement might be useful (a blood test could check Vit D levels too) but being outside is uplifting.

Callistemon21 Mon 30-Oct-23 12:56:57

iton supplements.
iron supplements.

I also have (hopefully temporary - plantar fasciitis) problems at the moment. Can drive and have a young dog, so do get out, but sympathise if housebound.why not take up a new (or old) hobby, like some form of needlework or art? It could be a project just for when you are immobile, or maybe something you never have time for. I did this during covid lockdown (embroidery). Loved it but not done any since 🤣
Hope you’re soon feeling brighter

Any suggestions for a pick me up that doesn’t involve iron as mine and my haemoglobin levels are already very high. That doesn’t seem to have increased my metabolism unfortunately. I shall increase Vit D.

SachaMac Mon 30-Oct-23 13:17:47

I take Osteocare liquid, contains Vit D, Calcium, Zinc and magnesium. A blood test found I had low levels of Vit D. this seems to do the trick.

The vet gave me Metatone for my cat! Is it really a pick-me-up for humans too? Good to know it works!

Minadex from Boots.. could you hire an electric wheelchair for a short period.. Or if you have someone to push you maybe borrow one.. I'd contact AgeUK they might even have volunteers..

Nannarose Mon 30-Oct-23 15:09:31

I would think about hiring a mobility scooter, or seeing if a friend could drive you to one of the country parks where you can hire one, and walk with you. Absolute tonic!

What about Floradix Vitamin B Complex? No iron in that. Available from Boots (except I haven't been able to find it there yet - always out of stock 🙄) and Holland & Barrett I think.

It can help vitamins to work better if you have some fruit juice at the same time.

Hope you feel better soon.

I find meta tone helps. Increases the appetite though!!
