Old fashioned pick me up

Good morning everyone, I have been through the mill recently with broken foot and various other health issues, and I’m just wondering if any of you ladies know of a good old fashioned tonic.

My mum used to swear by Metatone. Hope you find something to help.

It might seem slightly off topic but when I injured one if my toes badly *by dropping a full tube of shower gel on my bare foot) the pharmacist suggested I take strong Vitamin C tablets as they increase blood flow to the extremities and take inflammation away promoting healing. They might be worth a try. Good luck.

To be honest, Lesley60, in a situation like this I think you need a two pronged attack to support your mental and physical health.

Taking a supplement should be okay but if you are on any medication you should really check with your GP before taking anything - even vitamins and minerals can react with medication.

Try to think of things that you can do that will bring you pleasure to support your mental health - a big mug of hot chocolate by the fire, a good book or film, music, send yourself a bunch of your favourite flowers, a nook in the garden where you can sit amongst the flowers, a hobby, a phone call to a friend. Plan a little something for each day to look forward to. Not being able to move around easily gets depressing and saps your strength eventually

Hope your foot is better soon.

I am taking Vogel's Echinaforce echinacea drops which support the immune system.
I can remember asking my GP to recommend a tonic but he didn't. My mother years ago used to take Sanatogen. Don't know if still available.

Best wishes. Glass of sherry and some quality chocs. Take care and best wishes for a good recovery

I was put on to Sambuccol after a nasty bout of Covid - found it a brilliant pick-me-up. Boots sometimes have it on offer (3 for the price of 2). I'd highly recommend it.

how about this for a double good thing? This is a definite pick me up in this house and also uses up food in a good way and does not waste it. What is it? Right take one banana that is going a bit brown, peel and I use a corn on the cob bowl but anything will do. cut a line down the length of banana, add a little orange juice - fine from a carton - and a little brown sugar . (I dont keep sugar but bring home the little packs you are given with your coffee. Depending on the size 1 or two sugars spread along the banana) Then look in the cupboard and take your pick. A little rum, or brandy or the last drops of some liqueur. Pour over banana and put in the microwave for about a minute. well just look at it and see if it needs a little longer. They go mad if you want with a small amount of cream to give you the most cheering little treat whilst using up odd things. Very warming . I dont keep a lot of sweet stuff in as am diabetic but if I have unexpected visitors they make a great dessert. (You might need to try out one or two to check that you have the right recipe! After all you wont be driving. Cheers !

I'd just suggest that you take one of the A-Z vitamin and mineral tablets every day and also a Boots Max strength omega oil capsule (fish oils and similar). Possibly better to take them all the time rather than take a tonic to give you a boost?

So I’m coming at this from a different angle for your old fashioned tonic. It’s not supplements, vitamins or meds.

Here in my country - especially my state - there is an alcoholic drink that is very good and popular - called an Old Fashioned. (I’m not much of an alcohol consumer but I’ve tried this. 👍🏼)

It can be made with bourbon, whisky or brandy. And it’s a sweeter drink you can customize to your tastes:
• 2 tsp simple syrup (or can use sugar cubes)
• dash of orange bitters (to taste)
• 2 oz (shots) of bourbon
• lots of ice in the glass
• one orange peel
• one whole maraschino or cocktail cherry
Stir it all up and sip. That is if you like a good cocktail now and then.

Be careful if you are still on pain meds, you probably don’t want alcohol - but people enjoy drinking anyway.🤷🏼‍♀️ This is totally up to you as you may not drink at all!

But it made me laugh when I saw the original post - “this lady needs an Old Fashioned!”

I find meta tone helps. Increases the appetite though!!

albertina Wed 01-Nov-23 11:16:56

It can help vitamins to work better if you have some fruit juice at the same time.

Hope you feel better soon.

The vet gave me Metatone for my cat! Is it really a pick-me-up for humans too? Good to know it works!

Worked for us! grin

Any suggestions for a pick me up that doesn’t involve iron as mine and my haemoglobin levels are already very high. That doesn’t seem to have increased my metabolism unfortunately. I shall increase Vit D.

What about Floradix Vitamin B Complex? No iron in that. Available from Boots (except I haven't been able to find it there yet - always out of stock 🙄) and Holland & Barrett I think.

I would think about hiring a mobility scooter, or seeing if a friend could drive you to one of the country parks where you can hire one, and walk with you. Absolute tonic!

Minadex from Boots.. could you hire an electric wheelchair for a short period.. Or if you have someone to push you maybe borrow one.. I'd contact AgeUK they might even have volunteers..

I take Osteocare liquid, contains Vit D, Calcium, Zinc and magnesium. A blood test found I had low levels of Vit D. this seems to do the trick.

I also have (hopefully temporary - plantar fasciitis) problems at the moment. Can drive and have a young dog, so do get out, but sympathise if housebound.why not take up a new (or old) hobby, like some form of needlework or art? It could be a project just for when you are immobile, or maybe something you never have time for. I did this during covid lockdown (embroidery). Loved it but not done any since 🤣
Hope you’re soon feeling brighter

Callistemon21 Mon 30-Oct-23 12:56:57

iton supplements.
iron supplements.

Callistemon21 Mon 30-Oct-23 12:56:12

Floradix is good too iron plus B vitamins, but perhaps you should have your haemoglobin levels checked before you take iton supplements.

AreWeThereYet's suggestion of sitting in the garden if you have one, warmly wrapped up, is a good one. It's a bright sunny day here for a change 🙂
You won't get Vitamin D from the sun in the winter so taking a supplement might be useful (a blood test could check Vit D levels too) but being outside is uplifting.

fancythat Mon 30-Oct-23 12:48:15

I use Metatone too.
Helps me. Doesnt doing anything for someone else I know.

AreWeThereYet Mon 30-Oct-23 12:43:29

Do you have a garden? Even in the Winter I love to sit out and read or just have a coffee, wrapped in a warm blanket/throw/coat with a warm hat on. So long as it's not raining. We have a number of bird feeders and like watching them flitting back and fore. And there are less mowers out now so it's quieter too.
