Anyone else already hating the wet, dark cold nights

The clocks have only just gone back and I already hate the dark cold and often wet nights. Please tell me I am not alone. The winter seems so long and I need some inspiration about how to get through the next 4/5 months. You’d think I should be used to it by now but I am not!

Yes I hate it to don’t like wishing my life away but can’t wait for the light nights and warmer days

rosie1959 Fri 03-Nov-23 19:45:57

Most definitely agree OK till Christmas then just can't wait for spring

Sorry, but I love it! I love drawing the curtains, putting the lights on and hankering down. I love watching bad weather.

I sort of agree with you op.

Are you a going out in all weathers and in the evenings, sort of person.
Or a hankering down type person.
Or both?

Grandmadinosaur Fri 03-Nov-23 19:53:48

Yes I am. I just hate the dark, damp days. Doesn’t really change anything but one thing I like to do is to light lots of candles.
Roll on spring.

I join you in hoping for inspiration. Have been afraid of the dark all my life.
I refuse to economise on electric light - leave them on all over the house after it’s dark, esp hall and landing, Never do anything difficult after dark. Never make late afternoon appointments. Annoy DH by leaving too many lights on if we go out. Make sure I have plenty to read. Stockpile tomato soup.
Read polar adventures.

I am not a sun worshipper and never have been but this weather makes me wish I could hibernate. My joints hate it more than me so it’s quite depressing no matter how I wrap up the damp chills my bones.

It never used to affect me but nowadays I feel it more and more. On Wednesday, when it was cold and wet here, I felt in despair at another five months of chilly, dank weather. I just couldn’t get warm. We’ve just come back from my son’s in the US, where it was 28C last week, though it’s as cold as us now. The difference there is that even when it’s cold, it’s often dry and sunny and not this bone-chilling damp.

We’re still getting to grips with the CH in our new house and there are cold spots where we don’t want them, but I’m gradually learning how to control things. Biggest problem is the hall, which is north-facing and has a hard floor which is perpetually chilly.

It seems early in the season but I’ve begun wearing thermals on my top half, which has helped, and taking a hot water bottle to bed. Today a new throw arrived for the sofa so that should make things cosier.

I hate the long dark evenings. I went out yesterday at 2 pm and we were saying that in the summer it seems like you have most of the day left. During winter 2pm seems more like evening is drawing in.
I won’t wish my life away but I am already looking forward to spring time.

I don't mind the dark nights until Christmas, as it's a busy time and there is something to look forward to, but after that I just want to get the winter over, and there is often a long haul before Spring.

I love it, too. I love that moment when the curtains are drawn and we are all cosy indoors. Listening to rain feels good too, providing you aren’t out in it.

Thermals here too SueDonim although it’s not that cold yet really, I’ll know when my fingers go white and the Raynauds kicks in every day, only the odd occasion so far.
Electric blanket is now on every night though.

M0nica Fri 03-Nov-23 21:40:20

No, I love them.

grandMattie Fri 03-Nov-23 21:48:43

I enjoy the cosiness of the closed curtains, warmth of the flat, etc.. But… by the end of February, I start to feel that the dreariness has gone on for long enough, and long for spring and longer, brighter days

RosiesMaw Fri 03-Nov-23 21:52:56

Oh for goodness sake OP!
I know the British have a reputation for talking about the weather and worse, moaning.
Nights , by definition unless you live in the Arctic Circle in summer, tend to be dark.
It’s not cold yet and while there been a couple of storms, as somebody once said “You ain’t seen nothing yet”
Too cold, too wet, too hot- global warming? Doom and gloom.
Can’t you find a more positive way of looking at life?

Me too😄
Just love lighting candles and snuggling under a fleecy throw.

I do dislike the clocks going back, but this is the way, for now. But, the house is cosy, fireplace is warm, thermostat has us warm all day.

Doodledog Fri 03-Nov-23 22:07:51

I love listening to rain, too. If I am indoors, that is grin

Shinamae Fri 03-Nov-23 22:11:12

Absolutely love winter weather and early dark nights…..⛈️🥶

rafichagran Fri 03-Nov-23 22:16:47

Love it too, plantation shutters closed, candles, and the house is cosy.
I don't mind the dark nights and I love my winter clothes. I love all things Autumn/Winter.

merlotgran Fri 03-Nov-23 22:23:58

Roll on summer!

Joseann Fri 03-Nov-23 22:24:37

Each season has its own treasures. I always like to find something beautiful to enjoy.

Casdon Fri 03-Nov-23 22:26:41

I hate it, I’m a summer person. Getting outside for at least half an hour every day, however cold wet and miserable it is, is the best thing to do I think, at least that way a bit of light enters your brain and lifts your spirits.

Georgesgran Fri 03-Nov-23 22:37:49

I’m not a fan, but I like to alternate between cosy nights at home, a bit of babysitting for my DDs at their homes and I try to do a bit of City late night shopping once or twice a month for a change of scenery’.
Once the New Year starts, I get spring flowers for the house and look forward to the clocks jumping forward.
