Anyone else already hating the wet, dark cold nights

The clocks have only just gone back and I already hate the dark cold and often wet nights. Please tell me I am not alone. The winter seems so long and I need some inspiration about how to get through the next 4/5 months. You’d think I should be used to it by now but I am not!

We also need to remember that just as for most people in that situation, poverty is part of their life, but not their whole life. So someone who is well off now may well not have been well-off all their life, and may well have experienced periods of poverty.
So someone who was well off is poor now and will be struggling through these cold wet months. Possibly endangering health. That's OK then. We shouldn't care.

Oh come on. Nobody has said that we shouldn’t care. In fact I specifically said that there are things that we can do if we want to help. But not mentioning that we like cold days, or talking about the beauty of snow on the trees is not going to help anyone, is it?

I don’t mind it really. I rather like the feeling of closing the curtains late afternoon and feeling all snug indoors. I like better TV progs in autumn, I like catching up on my reading, I love making hearty stews and casseroles and I like my autumn and winter clothes. I even like going for a walk mid afternoon and coming back to a warm house as the heating comes on at 4.

Doodledog I agree. Autumn colours are lovely. And I love winter walks wrapped up in woolly scarf etc. And candles. Although I di find lack of sunshine lowers my mood.
But I'm not sure what point Monice is making. And I don't like the phrase "politics of envy".

As I walked dogs outside early this morning I worked out a bit of why fall is not my favourite. I dislike orange, brown, rust, tan, - fall colours. I prefer blue, pink, wine red, black, white. As do my face, hair and eyes.

di do

I love snow, everything about snow makes me happy.

We're all different.

It's very cold and wet in France as well, not pleasant even to walk the dog. The Alpes had heavy snowfall, so some will be happy. The French talk about the weather as well ,nothing negative to do so.

It’s the rain that gets me down, and the dark, dripping days. A bright sunny day is lovely at any time of the year, but a short, dark, wet cold day just isn’t a recipe for happiness in my book. I wonder if some of us are just naturally outdoor people, so we find winter harder than those who are naturally more indoor people?

Witzend Sun 05-Nov-23 10:39:41

It’s lovely and sunny here at the moment anyway. 🙂

I didn't really think the clocks going back was affecting me. Haven't given it much thought really. But, I am aware that my spirits are low at the moment. I feel really fed up and don't know why. So maybe it is because of the dark evenings.

We certainly are grin

I like to look at snow from a warm room. I hate being out in it, and apparently did as a child, too. My mum always says that it took her longer to get me dressed to go out (coat, hat, gloves, scarf etc) than I would stay outdoors in the winter, and I haven't changed much.

Lucky old us. We have a winter and a summer so 50 per cent of the population are happy at any given time. Personally I love both seasons

Norah Sun 05-Nov-23 13:55:44

It's not yet time for exterior window cleaners. I do inside on my own. I decided looking through our windows, after harvest, was not good for me. I took the step stool outside, washed windows. Done.

Still fall, but slightly better view of 'hurry on January'.

Still leaves falling...

TBH they’ve hardly started here. We have a big beech tree in the garden, still in full leaf, though some have changed colour.

Some are falling, definitely Autumn. Looks untidy. Clean windows help.

I am grateful to live in a country where there are four seasons all of which have beauty in them. Of course there are those who do not like the heat and can’t sleep and those who are cold and can’t sleep. Life is not fair or equal unfortunately but I do think we should count our blessings where( and while ) we have them whilst empathising and supporting with those who don’t. Not just in this country but around the world.

Well said Cressy.

Here is a cheery winter scene. This is my little redbreasted friend. He is nesting in the hedge outside my sitting room window, along with numerous other birds. Every hour or so he hops along to this gap in the hedge and stands sentry before hopping back in again. He seems to be looking straight at me from his perch. I can't get a better picture on my phone without getting closer, and if I did that he would fly away.

Norah Mon 06-Nov-23 11:33:59

I think washing the windows, yesterday, was a help lifting the glum mood of Autumn. December is hard - but January awaits.

Dottynan Mon 06-Nov-23 14:09:57

Doodledog~: Try holding your hand out with some mealworms in it. My daughter did this and after a couple of weeks her little robin was landing on her hand and happily feeding. It needs lots of patience.

I d too Norah and get ridiculously excited if we get any, it’s rarer here in the south.

I’m definitely in the camp that likes drawing the curtains on the dark nights and staying cosy inside to sew/crochet/ bake/ read/ watch tv etc etc.
I do try to get out in the daytime for a while tho as long as it’s not wet.
