Shrinkflation is so annoying

Shrinkflation is the practice of reducing the size or quantity of a product while the price of the product remains the same or slightly increases.

Have you noticed this with anything you buy?
Mine are:
Special K cereal - 500g down to 440g
Tiptree marmalade - 454g down to 340g

My husband checked the email confirmation for my online Tesco order last night to see if I’d forgotten anything we needed. Reaction? “ WHAT have you spent that much on! ! *”
Just the usual shopping dear, don’t you usually notice the price? Obviously not.
As for my typo earlier re -Andrew- toilet paper! Don’t care what it’s called as long as it does the job!

There is Gammon joint I buy and that has definitely shrunk in size, I think it used to be 1kg and has gone down to 700 grms, I know we used to get 2 good meals and a lunch out of it before, but just scraped the 2 meals last time. Price has increased too.

I still love M&S plain ginger biscuits. Admittedly these used to be better quality, crunchier and browner. But now the packet has shrunk. And quite a lot. And the taste deteriorated significantly.

This weirdly has been happening to the contents of my wardrobe ,could swear everything has shrunk by at least 10%shock

Shinamae,

Since Cadbury’s were taken over by Kraft a few years ago, they’ve slowly changed the milk chocolate over the years, until it’s reached the taste it is now. It’s getting very much like American candy. They deny it, but there’s a lot of stuff online about it. No doubt cheaper ingredients.
I no longer buy it either, as it’s nothing like it was. I tend to prefer a good quality dark chocolate instead nowadays.

I recently noticed Asda's own brand Cinnamon has gone from 38g to 34g.

Shinamae Fri 10-Nov-23 14:27:27

I haven’t had any Cadburys chocolate for months now, not just shrinkflation but to me it just doesn’t taste the same as it used to..🤷‍♀️

My local Tesco superstore used to sell boxes of 100 Twinings English breakfast tea bags for £3.00 per box. Overnight they increased to £6.00 per box. Then, they introduced a "new" product, same colour boxes of Twinings English breakfast tea bags at £5.40 per box. The catch? The boxes only have 80 tea bags, making the price now £6.75 per 100 bags. Each bag also seems to hold less tea as one tea bag no longer makes 2 cups of tea. I believe the price has since increased further.

I switched to own brand tea bags.

Look on Amazon, I get 4 x 80 strong variety for £11

I like Nakd bars but as they’ve got rather expensive, I now only buy them when on special offer, usually in Tesco or Sainsbury’s. Recently I spotted them in Asda, apparently with an even better offer so bought some. On getting home, I found the box only contained 3 bars instead of the usual 4. This worked out as the current price per bar when not on offer.
Caveat emptor!

The size of the holes in the middle of bagels has got bigger. But the overall size has remained the same. Crafty so and so's!!

We ran out of tea, because the brand we buy had decreased the number of bags in a box from 90 to 80.

Re toilet paper - I started buying boxes of Who Gives a Crap during the shortages in lockdown, I’m happy with the feel of it and the size of the rolls. I hate the name, but I can put up with that for being stocked up with loo roll!

(My gran is used cut up newspaper, not sure if you’re allowed to put that down the toilet nowadays!)

I remember those days of newspaper instead of toilet paper 🤣. Not very comfortable. How poor we must have all been in those days 😄

Fairycakes Fri 10-Nov-23 13:12:11

Prices are quick to go up but they rarely come down 😕

Boolya Fri 10-Nov-23 13:11:11

Lurpak now 200g not 250g.
Andrew loo roll so thin. I have just splashed out, ahead of a Christmas’invasion’, on quilted version.

I don't really mind the diminishing quantities - it has kept prices nearer to the pre-inflation ones and as my pension is fixed this is a good thing.

I find it more difficult to accept that although we breed the pigs, slaughter them ourselves in this country and cure the bacon that bacon has become so dear that I can now only afford it a treat, not as a useful standby I always had in the fridge.

Worst of all, are the items that suddenly without prior warning are either missing from the supermarket shelves or
in short supply.

I would rather pay the same price for a slightly smaller packet of flour, than find none at all in the shops when I need it!

Suzique Fri 10-Nov-23 12:53:56

Cadburys chocolate bars used to be 200g,
Now they are 180g, and don’t seem to be on offer either!
Maybe Cadburys are thinking of our figures?

Sjonlegs Fri 10-Nov-23 12:52:27

Ooh don't get me started, after a really, REALLY tough week I treat myself to a bottle of wine last night (nothing special, but due to inflation cost me an arm and a leg nonetheless) ... - my son and my husband were both out on corporate shenanigans ... I swear I only poured myself a glass and 'poof' gone!

You're so right ladies - shrinkflation really is a thing!!!!

Step4gran Fri 10-Nov-23 12:39:49

Tesco still do the packs of 6 - I buy them every week

weeducky Fri 10-Nov-23 12:39:24

Kittycat... Had a wee laugh at your typo "Aldi's seem better quality than ANDREW". Poor sole I'm sure he is just as good as old Aldi wink

cc Fri 10-Nov-23 12:35:19

CanadianGran

Here there has been so much of this, but I notice the bacon especially. 375 grams now.

Thank goodness there are still 12 eggs in a dozen!

Though there is one brand (Happy Eggs) that has 10 per box. I have to remember to look at the "price per" when I buy online.

Mojack26 Fri 10-Nov-23 12:29:22

Totally agree

Valeriejane Fri 10-Nov-23 12:22:47

I'm sure that very famous brand of gravy granules have made their glass jars thicker to make you think you are getting thr same weight.
Mind games 😵

Breakfast cereals. The boxes are so enormous, I can’t get them into the cupboard, but the bag of cereal inside the box looks tiny!

I do think it is a good thing when it comes to sweets, chocolate, cakes and biscuits. To me they should be a treat and not part of everyday eating, if they are not economical then we wont but so much of them.
