A question about quoting on Gransnet

I wonder if it's possible to quote just part someone's post, rather than all of it. Sometimes I'd like to respond to something that someone has said but have to quote the whole lot 🤔.
Many thanks.

copy and paste ?

merlotgran Fri 10-Nov-23 13:58:52

I wish more posters would just copy and paste the bits they want to reply to rather than stick another comment on multiple quotes.

I get tangled up and can’t work out who said what! 😩

I can copy and paste on the desktop but not on the tablet. Do others have the same problem?

RosiesMaw Fri 10-Nov-23 14:01:58

Yes, highlight, copy and paste then put it in italics by adding ^ ^ at the beginning and end.

Saves confusion and those great long posts containing several quoted posts or threads where the same thing comes up half a dozen times.

(That was on my iPad. )

@Merlotgran - hear, hear!

I can copy and paste on my Samsung. Just run your finger along the required text and a menu appears, allowing you to copy or cut.

I get annoyed, when someone quotes an entire lengthy post (I know a minor irritation in the light of world events) and then posts a one word response. I can only assume, they do not know how to copy and paste.

Beechnut Fri 10-Nov-23 15:09:52

^only assume, they do not know how to copy and paste.^

You’re right Marydoll I didn’t know, but I do now. Thank you 😀

Marydoll exactly the same on iPhone or iPad Copy and paste and it irritates me too when you get these massive chunks that you have to try and ignore to get past them

Ilovecheese Fri 10-Nov-23 16:02:06

I still can't do it, but thanks anyway.

Bella23 Fri 10-Nov-23 16:09:40

I'm getting Dh to give me a lesson I can't do it either.

Always happy to help! 😉

Thank you. I'll try it out next time and see if I can get it to work 😁

Doodle Fri 10-Nov-23 16:29:23

I didn’t realise you could do that either. I didn’t know that on the iPad if you put your finger on the text and hold it there the highlighter appears and you can select the text you want.
Thanks all. It makes things much easier.

Thanks all. It makes things much easier. (Doodle).

I've tried out the copy and paste from Doodle's post above, but I don't know how to get the inverted 'v' sign on my phone. I can see it on the 'w' key but don't know how to access it. If I press the key I just get 'w' 🤔😏

Fairycakes Fri 10-Nov-23 18:41:33

So I can't put her name in italics

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-23 19:07:49

Fairycakes

So I can't put her name in italics

if you press the !#1 key on your phone, you should get the inverted v.
This key is the equivalent of the shift key.

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-23 19:09:35

DH has spent just two hours sorting email problem. It took me ten minutes. I haven't lost my touch! 😉

Fairycakes Fri 10-Nov-23 19:26:43

! #1 is this right?
It didnt work! 🤣🤣🤣

Fairycakes Fri 10-Nov-23 19:36:07

I've found the inverted v but it doesn't do anything when I click on it.

For my Google Pixel android phone I have to:

press the key with
?123
followed by the key with
=\<
to find the key with
^

I hadn't realised it was such a palaver until I just checked 🤣

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-23 19:58:31

I have just done it on my Samsung Android.

I pressed the !#1 key , used the ^ key at either end of the word and it worked. No palaver at all. I don't use the mobile site. I kept my interface as desktop on all my devices. I don't like teh mobile site.
Could this be the answer?

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-23 19:59:00

Samsung Android phone.
