We have just booked a city break to Glasgow (1st week in December). Can any of you 'Glasga Grannies' (or any other GN members!) give us any recommendations of places to visit and good restaurants? Many thanks in advance.

I've never been but it is on my list of places I want to visit and reading about all the suggested places to visit makes me want to go even.more
But there are obviously too many places to visit just for a couple of days, and it is a long way for me. How long a visit would make it possible to visit a lot of those places. I love art galleries and museums and do actually like to spend time liking at the exhibits and reading the captions. I'd be really frustrated just popping in a gallery for just a couple of hours.

Hope you have a great time it sounds a good time had by all kind of gathering but I’m not free at the present to meet up.
Be good to read about how it all goes though.

Coia's is lovely.

Hijacking the thread, sorry Curlywhirly. Would any of you, who obviously live in Glasgow, be interested in coming to the latest meet up?

Concert Hall Cafe Bar, light lunch and everyone pays for their own meal/snack. There is always lots of chat and hilarity.

Lots of places to see in Glasgow. Plenty have already been mentioned.
A superb cafe which doubles as a restaurant is Coia's in Duke Street in the east end of glasgow. Hubby and I go there regularly.

Red Onion and Ardnamurchan are my two fave restaurants

I have been trying to recall Chakkoo, been racking my brains. It's favourite of ours.

Great ideas on places to visit from everyone and, if the weather is reasonable, the HoHo bus (live commentary if possible) is an ideal way to get about.

If you appreciate good food, you are spoiled for choice in Glasgow. Obviously depends on your budget, but here are some suggestions:

We love the west end and Finnieston areas for restaurants.

Ox and Finch or Ka Pao for amazing tapas style food.

Six by Nico ( 2 separate restaurants usually offering different menus).

Crabshakk for fish - not cheap, but excellent - again 2 to choose from, the original in Argyle St is small, but lots of character, Vinicombe St one is bigger and more stylish.

If you like curries, Chakkoo does tapas style dishes - again 2 restaurants - 1 in the city centre and 1 in the west end.

Have a fabulous trip Curlywhirly

Sound like you’ll need more than a city break to see all these interesting places

It certainly does ninamoore!! There's obviously lots to do. Really looking forward to it.

Depending on the weather, The Necropolis is a very interesting place - it contains the tombstones of the great who founded Glasgow, salsa walking round it you can see all aspects of Glasgow - It's quite close to St Mungo's Cathedral and the gallery of religious art.
Enjoy - I'm jealous!

Baggs

I've never eaten a 'proper' meal at the Willow Tea Rooms (Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald design) on Sauchiehall St but the Tea and Scones are fabulous.

Thank you Baggs for triggering a wonderful memory. In 1965 Love of my life and I went to Glasgow to buy an engagement ring, Then for a bite to eat at the Willow Tea Rooms, where he went down on one knee and proposed. Of course I said yes and the customers and staff all cheered. No charge for our meal but we left a generous tip

We were in Glasgow recently. Lovely Indian food restaurant, Koolba in the Candleriggs area. Loved the murals in the city too, you can book a guided tour.

I’m in Edinburgh, but when I go to Glasgow I usually go to a restaurant called Ardnamurchan at the top of Hope Street which has excellent food and is not too expensive. It is also within easy walking distance of the bus station. Glasgow Cathedral is worth a visit, as is Provan’s Lodge, the ‘oldest house in Glasgow’, which is nearby and also the Cathedral museum which is interesting too. Have a great time!

The thing I remember most about Glasgow was the wonderful friendliness of the people in the hig sprawling Central Hotel and the big smiles of the ladies who served me in shops. It was so different from attitude of shop staff in central London and really added happy memories of Glasgow.

Blondie49 Tue 14-Nov-23 11:33:23

Agree with all the sights folk have mentioned, but one thing we really enjoyed was the hop on hop off bus which was valid for 2 days , though that was a couple years ago. Enjoy

Philippa111 Tue 14-Nov-23 11:23:11

People in Glasgow are really friendly and helpful.. Have a wonderful time.

Bookcooker Tue 14-Nov-23 11:12:49

Concur with all the above. Just don’t expect to be able to use your English bus pass in Scotland. Unless there have been any recent changes. Oh and city centre is now a ulez type zone.

In case of any misunderstanding, The Burrell is wonderful 🙂. I just thought it might be difficult to do it justice on a short visit to Glasgow. You must book another visit immediately, Curlywhirly 😂

LOUISA1523 Mon 13-Nov-23 22:33:49

I took my mum for 3 nights last year...we loved it....we stayed in a tenement building airbnb....it was 2nd floor but worth the stairs climb....we were on great Western Road....near the botanic gardens .....we had a lovely Thai meal on Byers Road ( can't remember name ) ....buses and metro were cheap and reliable ....we were at the kelvingrove over lunch time and at 1pm a
The organ was played for about 30mins ...it was lovely...we were sat having a cup of tea.....I love Edinburgh....but Glasgow had the edge imo .

Marydoll Mon 13-Nov-23 22:21:09

I am quite excited reading too this thread and I live in Glasgow! 😂

My DIL was one of the project managers on Burrell, which one an award.refurbishment.
# proud MIL!

Litterpicker Mon 13-Nov-23 20:58:38

Oooh, I’m all excited - I already have an ‘Alexa’ list of places I want to visit in Scotland but now I will have to add a few more. I’m a Glaswegian who hasn’t lived in Glasgow since 1972 so feel like a tourist now.

I would say, whatever else you do, you should visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The Burrell may be too much for a two night stay - maybe better to enjoy the city centre and a stroll along the riverside if the weather is kind 🙂

Hope you have a great time, Curlywhirly.
