The return of David Cameron

What a very clever move indeed to bring David Cameron back into the Cabinet. Tories all must be shaking in their boots with a General Election nigh and the shambolic government at present.

David Cameron was respected by a great many people and his return must give a much needed boost to Tory morale. The chap has a backbone.

I just could not believe that Cameron is back! He ran away after the Brexit vote. If the Conservatives think that bringing Cameron back will help them win the next general election they should think again.

Cameron's appointment smacks of desperation. Not just shuffling the deckchairs on the Titanic but digging out a frayed and shabby one from the back of the cupboard and hoping no one will remember how it collapsed on us last time. Many of us have not forgotten or forgiven the Brexit shambles, or DC's lobbying scandals, or his role as the architect of austerity. And then of course there is the nonsense about him having to be a Lord to get him into Cabinet - so very quaint and British.

As a member of the Lords David Cameron’s actions or statements cannot be scrutinised by other MPs as he is not allowed in the House of Commons- I don’t call that democracy. He will be receiving his PM pension, Foreign Secretary salary and £300+ a day for popping in the Lords- when public finances are at rock bottom we now have to pay an already rich man 3 salaries . I have a feeling Dodgy Dave will be controlling things behind the scenes with puppet Sunak dancing to his tune.

Don’t you think that given what is happening in Ukraine and the Middle East someone of known standing on the international stage is needed for this post? This is a bold and visionary move by Sunak

I’m sorry but have you seen Cameron’s past record on foreign policy!!!

Susieq62 Wed 15-Nov-23 15:43:55

No backbone at all, did not stand up to Farage and his bullying, jumped ship when he lost the referendum. I have no time or respect for him and I am delighted that the Tory party is in such disarray. Our civil service departments must be tearing their hair out with all of the ministerial changes. Consistency has flown out of the window .

They are finished anyway!!!!

I disagree with your OP. David Cameron couldn't bear to comply with the electorate's decision to quit the EU - a referendum he thought he would win but badly miscalculated- and therefore had to leave government. Then there was the massive failure and scandal of the Greensill Capital which he tried to secure government backing from. So I fail to see what good he will bring to Sunak's government - in fact I can only see another nail in the Tories coffin. Sunak deserves every inch of ground he's got coming for the disgraceful way he treated Stella Braverman. We need more straight speaking politicians like her, not more slimy, self serving snakes in the grass like Sunak and Cameron.
(and I'm a lifelong Tory voter - or was!)

I cant work out if you are serious of just making a tongue in cheek comment. It it's the first then you must be living in a different world to be. David Cameron is spineless. Lost the Brexit vote and threw his dummy out by resigning. Didn't have the guts to stay and salvage the mess he had caused. Disgraceful that Sunak has made him a Lord to justify bringing him back to government. It will all end in tears.

There is no point arguing about this. As usual those who hate Conservatism will remain entrenched in their opinions and those who are in the middle or who vote Conservative are outnumbered. It is plain for all to see that this Government is in trouble. You may not like it but Suella Braverman was correct that unless we got out of the antequated ECHR we had no chance of sending illegal immigrants to Rwanda. It amuses me that those of you who adore the EU fail to see that Germany, Italy and Austria are all working on a similar scheme to ours. Italy has already agreed to send illegal immigrants to Albania. It probably will not work and they will still come to UK! It is pure common sense to ask where these immigrants will be fed, housed, kept medically fit and have children in school without overcrowding our cities and causing all sorts of problems. All we hear is such discussion is “racist” so the left shut people up. I will always willing to discuss these live problems but all we hear is we must Chuck more money at the NHS and build more homes and schools. Both Labour and Tory govt have not done this. I just know the country is in adisunified state. I am really looking forward to Sir Keir arriving on his red horse and solving all our problems. He won’t ofcourse but he cannot do worse than my party which deserves to be defeated.

He had the integrity to resign after the referendum result because, as a committed remainer, he felt that he could not properly lead the country out of the EU. A man of principle. Unlike Johnson who tossed a coin to decide which side to support (i.e. which side he would gain most from supporting).

I agree. Having lived in Witney until 20 years ago he was my MP. Though not myself a Tory supporter, I did respect him and thought he was OK. Immediately prior to him we had a Tory who defected to the Labour party and was then rewarded with a safe labour seat. Prior to that we had Douglas Hurd. He at least brings some experience into the cabinet, though I don't think it will be enough to win them the next election.

Zuki Wed 15-Nov-23 19:05:04

He is just what's needed level headed experience not an annoying personality With all the trouble in the world great choice

Saggi Wed 15-Nov-23 20:01:32

Bringing him back is the nail in the Tories coffin ….hopefully!

Julia9TC Wed 15-Nov-23 20:51:20

Have we forgotten the unnecessary, indeed very harmful, austerity meaures he brought in after being elected? which re still in force? These have caused dreadful harm and driven so many into desitution that the UK envoy on human rights says tha te UK government is in breach of international law. He called it the“systematic immiseration of a significant part of the British population”.

Ikiesgranma Thu 16-Nov-23 01:28:25

No he hasn’t or he wouldn’t have mismanaged the referendum in 2016 then taken his ball home when he didn’t like the result. Backbone, eh?

My thoughts exactly. He behaved like a five year old and ran away when it went the wrong way for him.

MayBee70 Thu 16-Nov-23 01:57:28

What has happened to Alok Scharma? I thought he was one of the Conservative good guys but he seems to have disappeared to the back benches?

maddyone Thu 16-Nov-23 09:27:12

It was reported this morning that Cameron is in Ukraine today.
I imagine Zelensky is overcome by a visit by a previous failed PM.

toscalily Thu 16-Nov-23 11:01:09

Is that a ploy, keep him out of the country as much as possible in the next few weeks in the hope that there will be less publicity regarding his past exploits?

Not necessarily. Rory Stewart said the problem for foreign secretaries is they were often tied to having to be in parliament for important votes etc and that, by having someone who can’t be in the HOC they are free to travel anywhere anytime. He also said that Cameron was straight on the phone to world leaders that he knew personally. So his appointment could be a good thing for the country at a time when the world is in such a mess. I still think his appointment was pretty shameful but it does have a positive side.

Finding it hard to swallow whoever said a woman couldn’t fit it.
Angela Merkel did a great job in many ways.
Ursula Van Der Leyden may not be all that but s huge on international stage.
PM of New Zealand. President Croatia, PM Norway then Shadow opposition Yvette Cooper and Emily Thornverry.
None suitable for The job but take a look at women rising stars like Zara Sultana
And qureshi and other emerging Labour left women.
Trouble is people get a vote with little understanding of what parties stand for.
How many know that Starmer had moved right of centre for instance and is whipping mps who want a ceasefire in Gaza?

Frogoet Thu 16-Nov-23 11:31:33

Take a look at what Starmer is doing to women and men of principle

I live in a strongly Tory area where tgere are women who say - I don’t discuss politics it’s boring and then vote Tory

Galaxy Thu 16-Nov-23 11:39:16

Sorry if those women are not interacting in exactly the way you want them to.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 16-Nov-23 12:05:46

Why should they discuss politics with you if they don’t want to Frogoet? I also live in a Conservative stronghold and vote for that party in general elections but I don’t make a habit of getting into political discussions with neighbours unless I already know that their views chime with mine - it’s a guaranteed way of falling out. Strictly good friends and family only.

Galaxy Thu 16-Nov-23 12:16:24

I love a good political argument with my family but not with anyone else to be honest. I, shock horror, know lots of people who never give party politics a second thought, it's as much as some of them can do to make it through the day.

oldeman Thu 16-Nov-23 13:46:53

I'm not sure about David Cameron. In fact I'm not sure about most politicians! Looking back though I think he may have been better than most of those we have had since and even those recently before him. I say this taking into account my general observations as I am not particularly a Conservative supporter. It must be a horrendous job trying to run a country but I'm guessing that there are lots of perks.
