Do you like to be given flowers for the home as a birthday gift, anniversary etc or as a nice surprise? Would you buy yourself flowers? I ask because I would prefer a pot plant or chocolates

I buy a bunch most weeks from one of the supermarkets. When we have some in the garden I will cut a few of those instead, and at daffodil time the house will be full of daffodils.

The only flower we don't buy are lilies - hate the smell, hate the pollen and they remind me of funerals.

I love fresh flowers but unfortunately, I have a cat who launches a seek and destroy mission as soon as she sees them. 😥

Love flowers in the garden but not cut . Our dog nibbles them and they look daft high up. Love a plant , if it’s a gift it makes me think of that person. Also allergic to Lillies .

Always, have some plants too but you can't keep getting/buying them as you'd soon run out of room.

I do love a vase of flowers. Mostly I take them from my garden in the summer, and I have a few smaller vases for this.
My kids will buy grocery store bouquets for me on occasions, but I find they always have lilies in them which I don't like.

I haven't the heart to tell my kids to avoid lilies. I rarely buy flowers for myself, mostly tulips and daffs in the spring.

I also like houseplants, but am getting to the point of not knowing where to put them. My one son always seems to buy a potted plant.

For the person with the orchids not blooming; I had similar, but I gave them a bit of a shake-up by pulling them from the pot, trimming ends, re-potting and feeding. You don't need a bigger pot. It is rewarding when they finally do re-bloom.

I love flowers and am lucky to be given some now and then.
But I also love pot plants. I recently bought a lovely pink cyclamen for only £4,99 and it's blooming marvellous. And a little African violet for £3.99 which is so pretty. I also collect indoor succulents which I love, and have a lemon tree which I am growing indoors and is now about two feet high.
Plus a few other plants. I'm running out of space for them now.

Always have flowers in the house

My daughter works p/t in a supermarket and brings me flowers that staff can buy at cut price, once they reach the 'don't display after this date'. Recently I have had roses which last for about 2 weeks. Otherwise I have a few pot plants.

I love flowers and always have a vase full on the hall console table. I love to receive them as a gift and like to give them to others. I don’t like to cut flowers from the garden because they last much longer growing there.

I love them. They really cheer me up. I love to receive them from my AC s , much better than chocolate any day!
Today I bought myself some… which I always do if I’m feeling a bit down.

If I'm giving a supper party, I inwardly groan if guests bring cut flowers.
There's more than enough to do without having to find the right vase, unpack the flowers and put them in the vase, then find the right place to display them.
Pot plants are a different matter, they are definitely welcome.

I love receiving flowers on special occasions. On my recent birthday, I was thrilled to see my DGD arriving with a huge bouquet of autumnal colours. They lasted well - even now there's a bronze chrysanthemum all on its own in a small vase! I buy flowers for myself quite often. The lovely white chrysanths I bought in Aldi last week are surviving well.

I dont like cut flowers. Last birthday i. Was given a lot and had the trouble of arranging them and then some died before others and they needed sorting out and water changing. Much sooner see them growing in their natural state.

i have an in-law who has known me for 40 years but never bothered to get to know me, she has never once sent me a gift that i like or could use, flowers are one of those, large expensive bouguets, i tried to hint one year that the flowers are nice but i did not have a vase, so yes she sent a vase for next time rather than think if i am in my 40s 50s or 60 and i don't have a vase it is because i don't like flowers, and have no use for a bloody vase. she also goes online and sends expensive chocolates, i am not a chocolate person, would prefer a cheap box of milk tray.

My mum used to buy me flowers nearly every week in her last years, because I looked after her and took her shopping, so she picked up a bunch for me.
Now she’s gone I have a photograph of her and dad on a small table in the sitting room and I buy the flowers and put them there near the picture. When it’s her birthday or dad’s birthday, or other special days, I buy an especially nice bunch and put them there. When I look at the flowers I remember my parents.

I love flowers in the house , but with costs these days they have to b e a treat, so dont always have them. Absolutely HATE those awful roses that look ok but have no perfume and are usually imported at great expense. I used to be able to grow flowers in my garden and was rarely without something lovely inside, from snowdrops through to hellebores etc . In plant pots I have scented leaf geraniums which I love especially tomatosa which is velvety to touch and smells of mint. Have also deliberately grown various mints in pots in the kitchen. Lovely to touch and mint sauce at the ready!! I know you can buy bottles of mint sauce etc but oh that lovely aroma as you chop it up with a knife. Brings back memories of doing it for my granny many years ago. I am a singer and busy at christmas so I deliberately grow hyacinths NOT for the christmas day time but I have about 3 or 4 pots set up to begin flowering about middle of january and then on until about the end of march. Plant 3 of the same variety in a pot - they dont mix colours well as they often come out at different times, so use the same kind and you can have a lovely perfumed room from january onwards and of course being yorkshire, I ignore the instructions to chuck them away afterwards and have planted them out each year. They may not be so closely flowering but still give a great show nevertheless. I also try to get some paperwhite narcissi planted to bring a lovely cheerful look to the winter. Yes i want my cake and eat it, if money no object would have flowers and plants all the time. Bring a joy to winter definitely

I love flowers, mostly all types. Favourites are daffodils-nice, cheap & cheerful, roses, sunflowers, Lillie’s, tulips. Not so much the chrysanthemums flowers, I call them old ladies flowers, wait for it, I am 62 so getting there. Just don’t find them a pretty flower.
Yes I buy myself flowers, I don’t wait till DH does. Flowers cheer up a room no end, I love chocolates but could eat so many so soon so rather have a nice bunch of flowers any day. I would have plain houseplants over flowering houseplants

karmalady Tue 28-Nov-23 06:45:21

I much prefer plants in pots and I think I have around 30 pots downstairs as well as several upstairs. My main love is my collection of many types of sansevieria, I think I have over 70, they like being tight in pots. I have chinese evergreens, peace lilies, christmas cacti and so on. I do get flowers but they are usually gift bouquets from the AC. It is the green plants though, they exude calmness and clean the air

I grow hundreds of flowers in my garden but I don`t cut them

CBBL Tue 28-Nov-23 07:09:07

I love flowers, but with 3 cats, having them in the house is problematic.
Many are toxic to cats, and there is always a danger of one of them knocking over the vase.
When I do receive them, I take any pollen bearing parts away before putting them in a vase, and try to site them away from places where the cats love to be (windowsills, for instance).
Plants are worse, as the cats would dig in the soil!
Much as I love flowers, my cats "last" for 18 to 20 years, and bring me joy every day - no contest for me!

BigBertha1 Tue 28-Nov-23 07:46:48

Yes I have flowers in the house usually bought by me from the supermarket...mostly lilies. Having 2 lovely daughters means I get lovely flowers on my birthday and Mothers Day. Flowers from husband on our wedding anniversary but no present. This house is smaller so now the Xmas decs are up ( yes it's early but we have visitors this weekend) there isn't any room.

I adore flowers in or out of the house ! I love to receive them as a gift or I buy them for myself, I always have to have at least one bunch in the house , if I didn't it would feel like being half dressed !

Shel69 Tue 28-Nov-23 19:46:34

I love cut flowers in my kitchen and living room,I also have put plants in my bedroom kitchen and sitting room

Oreo Tue 28-Nov-23 20:33:27

Yes, I love having a vase of fresh flowers in the house but rarely get bought them.I buy some myself now and then if they’re fairly cheap.I like a few pot plants around as well.My ex MIL gave me lots of her old fashioned vases years ago which are really pretty, so I’ve got tons of vases but very few flowers.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 28-Nov-23 20:51:45

madeleine, I have grown forced hyacinths for January blooming for many years as gifts. I tell the recipients to plant them.out in the garden afterwards- double the pleasure.
