Fish and Chips - not a cheap meal anymore

Someone we know told dh yesterday that he’s been quoted £5k to insure his new Tesla. This is a reasonably sedate bloke of 50 odd, not a boy racer. This was in Oxford.

Dh heard elsewhere yesterday that someone in a fairly affluent London postcode, has been unable to find anyone to insure his Range Rover - apparently because so many in that area get nicked!

Here in Hull it is around £7.50 for Haddock and chips (Cod would never be served in a Hull chippy!)

Back in the day Hull would smell of fish as so much was landed from the trawlers, freezers and sidewinders that came into the fish dock.

The area was buzzing with life and activity, local business thrived due to the fishing industry and now it’s all gone.

No fish is landed here in Hull, there is one fishmonger left in the Hessle Rd area, it’s so sad.

The only reminders are the beautiful murals in tribute to the all the men who worked so hard in treacherous conditions to bring home the fish and the “headscarf revolutionaries that fought for better working conditions for these men and boys.

£7.50 seems like a bargain really!

Our local chippy serves a cheap white fish not cod or haddock at all with chips and peas £11. If we go to a restaurant or pub locally £16/18 depends where we go. I only like this meal in the summertime on holiday.

Bite off their arm. £7.50 is a good price but sad that the historic fishing industry in hull has been decimated. Is that post Brexit or earlier, sorry I live a way away and don’t know hull.

We pay £15 each for takeaway hake and chips at the harbour in Padstow. Expensive, no doubt because of the chef's name, but superior to those from the chippie.

This is very sad. My first part time job (age 14) was in the local chippy and every night I worked we had a free supper and a bottle of Tizer. My school friends were a bit sniffy about my working in a chip shop until they found out I got paid twice what they earned in a department store. I worked there on and off for years and later when I was a student. Of course I was paid in cash.

£9 - 10 for a small portion in my corner of South Oxfordshire. Large cod and chips is £13. They also do a mini-fillet and chips for £6. We find that suits us nicely, but it is only available weekday lunch time.

Silverlining how come your Insurance is so high, that's almost more than the car is worth.
I have a 10 year old fiesta too, and my fully comp insurance is under £250.. and I'm in greater London

I don’t think fish and chips has ever been cheap? Years ago when our girls were young the 4 of us used to go round to my mum’s on a Tuesday teatime. She’d set the table, warm the plates in the oven and butter half a loaf of Warbie’s bread and Himself & I would go round to the chippy. Food of the gods - and we were always so grateful for our weekly treat. It seemed expensive then to be honest. Pro rata to wages anyway.

The “Cod Wars” was the beginning of the end, this started in the 1970’s, many countries then started their exclusion zones.

Oh ok thanks Sago, it’s always a pity when these things happen.

I've given up on our local shop; the food was excellent, and we enjoyed a fish and chip supper from time to time. However the cost has almost doubled in a year, and the quality has gone down dramatically.

How funny daughter just messaged me to say she has had to sell her Defender as the insurance quote was 10K!

They live in rural Cheshire.

Some of these prices seem astronomical. I always think of the UK as a ‘fishing nation’ with lovely haddock ,fresh kippers etc. We don’t get haddock,most of our fish in a chip shop is flake which is actually shark but they don’t call it that ( can’t think why !) Apparently lobsters and crayfish prices are through the roof so won’t be getting any for Christmas!

Maybe eat your Fish and Chips in daytime at an Ember Inn - it was still 8.29 last time I looked and you get free heating while you eat it !!!

I think the price of domestic fuel is driving the price up. It can’t be cheap to get and keep oil or dripping to boiling point and keep it there. Last time I went to our chippie, it was just under seven pounds for a small portion of cod and chips, but they are always fresh and second to none, with plenty of takers.

Two cod, one portion of chips (more than enough for two), one large mushy peas was £18.50 last week.
It has gone up quite a lot recently but so have their costs.

I've often wondered why, when Australia is surrounded by sea and many large cities and towns are coastal.
Barramundi (not farmed) and chips is delicious.

DH and I have discovered the most glorious chippy in Glasgow. It is traditional Italian, run by third generation, under a railway arch and 2 fish teas ( 1 large 1 small ) are change from £20.
Last time went we tasted the most delicious black pudding which they were happy to sell us. Absolutely fabulous service and value.

Paid £9 for large fish and chips tonight which did both of us. Was nice and welcome after visiting DM (88) who is having a baby boy and not sure how to tell my brother!

I’m a bit confused about “did us both” . Are we all talking about takeaway as opposed to eating in.

Think it means it was enough for us both.

I understand that, but if you’re eating in you can’t both share a portion. If you’re at home you can order 1 and divide it between you. I think we all understand that eating in a restaurant or cafe will be a different price than a takeaway.
