Fish and Chips - not a cheap meal anymore

I was thinking how cheap it used to be to buy a portion of fish and chips but now, for us, it is around $15. I think that is around £8. We used to be able to get good fish for much less than half this not very long ago. What is happening in the UK, is it the same? Where have all the fishes gone ?

I am 100% positive Callistemon. It was actually £4/10s and 2 old pence.
So £4.51 today’s money. I got one Day off a week for college too and 2 bob luncheon vouchers,
I worked in central London so had to pay fir travel (£1.50) and my mumTook another £1.50.
It went up to £5 ..eventuallysmile

And I thought they paid London Weighting. I was in the provinces too.

I only had to pay for the bus!

In the 1950s/early 1960s I used to buy a sit down meal of cod, chips, buttered bread and tea for 2s 3d in David Whitfield's 'Gainsboro' fish restaurant in Hull. Halibut was 3s 6d. Las time I bought fish and chips from a chippie was in Godalming a few years ago: about £11!

Locally for me just over £7 at the nearest F & C .
Do my own in a air fryer with Frozen Fish Cod or Haddock and then McCain Chips .

Glad someone does Dickens. Rock n roll had begun ( which I did like) but I still liked DW, probably because mum did. Always was a bit behind the musical times,

I had fish and chips plus a drink in Wetherspoons and it came to just over £11 .
But it was such a small portion of chips that I was hungry afterwards .
Perhaps , it's designed to make you want a pudding !

Our local chippy offers fish and chips for OAPs for £6.90 .

The cheapest lunch is offered by our greasy spoon . I can't fault it .
