Bed jackets

My mum had a pale blue crochet bed jacket that I think she was given when I was born ( 70+ years ago) . She was still wearing it every morning for her breakfast in bed before she died aged 97! I did buy her a smart cosy fleece one for a birthday which she never wore. I use a shawl that thinking about it, is at least 50 years old as I used it when night feeding !

My mum gave me one as a present when I was in my late twenties that she had had knitted for me. I was appalled and gave it to a charity shop unworn!

A lightweight fleece does the job for me.

I have two large crochet shawls on the chair next to my bed. When I had Covid I wrapped myself in shawls, [funnily the pattern was called The Virus Shawl] and always use them if chilly when reading in bed. Love a shawl.

Bon Marche have some little quilted bed jackets at £12.80 at the moment - reduced from £16. They look quite thin so don't know how warm they are. Quite pretty though, in different colours.

I'm another who doesn't have heating in my bedroom. But when I wake up and have my tea in bed and read for a bit I put on an old Laura Ashley thick wool jumper, a scarf and a hat.

That was supposed to say hoodies are great backwards cuz you could put your popcorn in the hood!

Isn't a 'hoodie' or 'oodie' the modern substitute?

I too prefer a cardigan I’ve 2 lovely white ones I wear to bed and if I get hot through the night I just take it off I don’t get up though I just chuck it to the side.

Still available and very nice too! But very expensive to wear in bed!

I suppose we are now expected to leap out of bed first thing to go running or whatever. Staying in bed after waking is no longer advisable as an appropriate indulgence or a “cure”. And it is no longer viewed as a desirable pastime exclusively for the privileged. Perhaps. .

I have my Mum's bed jacket, knitted by Tante (German Auntie) Maria, in 1962. Still nice and cosy.

I received a free poncho from Cottontraders which is lovely and warm.

My DD bought me a double-sided poncho granmattie it was from Joules. I think they still operate online though the shops have shut down. It's really handy even in the car.

I don’t have the heating on in my bedroom as I’m always too hot with it on , but when the temperature dropped last weekend I was freezing when sat up in bed to watch tv. The need for a bed jacket came to mind so I looked at Amazon and I’ve ordered a soft fleecy one in pink . I really didn’t think that I’d find one x

Okay here's what I do when I'm laying in bed and I get chilly watching TV or whatever. I keep a cardigan nearby I put the cardigan on backwards, slip my arms through the sleeves and do not have to close the back because it's up against the pillow. This usually does the trick.

I think I must have the M&S one Witzend mentioned. I wear a dark red fleece one most of the time as I go to bed early to read. I have a much thicker drab cream one also bought at the same time but it’s too hot even in our icy bedroom.

I bought a lovely, fleecy bed jacket in a charity shop last year. It doesn’t look at all old ladyish and is very nice to wear at this time of year.

I bought several blush pink, extremely soft velour type jackets with waterfall collars from Matalan which I gave out as Christmas presents a few years ago. One went to my dear mum who loved hers. When she died, 4 years ago, it came back to me and its so cosy and warm and I love wearing it as it reminds me of her.

I was looking for something similar to wear while reading in bed so I went on good old ebay and found a lovely short cardigan. It's warmer than it looks and is very pretty.

Some nice ones on Amazon, but they are £40! I did spy something called a “shoulder cape”, though, brand is Akozon, it’s grey and purple, Velcro fastened….. with a voucher it it’s only about £12 - I’m tempted!

Aldom I'm not surprised you love your bed jacket. Your eldest child will be 60 next year and I wish you both happiness.
My late DM bought me a duvet-like bed jacket when I had a frozen shoulder about 30 years ago - so painful, and the jacket did help. I gave it to a neighbour with a frozen shoulder, who told me she had also given it away eventually.

My bedtime wear is really for sundays as it is very "Hol(le)y !! As a widow living alone I dont need to worry who will see it and my lovely top is a very very old cashmere jumper where the underarms are definitely holey. But the rest of it is still good and so it is lovely and warm and light. I still wash it gently by hand and wouldnt be without it . It is the very oldest of my cashmere jumpers which have been very slowly accumulated for over 25 years, looking out for sales and charity buys. I treat them with care and they keep me warm. Certainly wouldnt be any competition for one of those very fancy pretty bed jackets but I am happy with them!
