Matching pyjamas by whole family.

Opinions may vary 😀

I have to agree with you, annsixty and I can't help wondering how many grans, reading some ot these posts, have been mortally offended!
Just used one of my pet hates; over-use of exclamation marks!!

Houses lit up worse than Blackpool illuminations at Christmas. Blow up Santas.

Just wondering where the words 'settee' and 'serviette' came from and why Nancy Mitford should have regarded them with such horror that it persists for decades... grin

I was thinking of her You and Non You list too. - Perfume, toilet, mirror, sweet and radio etc etc.

Tatler produced a new list in 2019. Included in the Non U list are Jacob Rees - Mogg and France (except Paris).

Add white stillettos to GSM's list and I'm reminded of dozens of girls getting off the train at Liverpool whilst we were waiting for that same train to take us back to Suffolk at midnight.

The dresses the female stars wear at premiers and award ceremonies.

I wonder how people would react if the male stars/celebrities turned up at these shows wearing next to nothing, but an apron so tiny it barely covered their tackle, or trousers with the buttocks completely cut away.

Then look at pictures of people at serious events. The DM today has a picture of 5 young women, all giggling and posing like my 16 year old granddaughter and all beautifully dressed in exquisite evening dresses.

calling absolutely everybody LOVELY.. and those huge bows that poor babies have to endure on their heads

annsixty Sat 16-Dec-23 12:58:14

Alright “shattered” was a bit silly, pathetic even.
But it did express my thoughts on such snobby attitudes.

TerriBull Sat 16-Dec-23 12:58:32

Shattering or even devastating are only expressions I would attribute to really horrific events such as those being played out around the world, or a personal tragedy.

I don't think the thread is meant to be taken too seriously. Most of the comments are observational and subjective I imagine we all have our foibles and personal dislikes, particularly when it's driven along by social media. It's not a big deal just a discussion point and reflecting on attitudes of a bygone era, exemplified by Nancy Mitford's writings highlights how attitudes are often generational and in her case of a certain demographic.

I think what i used to call naff or common has become more "commonplace" so these things have now trickled into every day life phrases actions etc i even use some myself but the thing that gives me the ick lol (great saying) is young kids using americanisms x

GrannyGravy13 Sat 16-Dec-23 13:05:47

One person’s naffness is another person’s favourite.

Urmstongran Sat 16-Dec-23 13:10:16

I’m with Mr. Bennet (Pride & Predjudice):

“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?”

😁

I did read some time ago that Mitford's article was written as a bit of a joke...

Joseann Sat 16-Dec-23 13:14:05

dressing dogs up in daft costumes is totally naff
Oh dear, I'm obviously the epitome of naffness. But happy with it.
grin

I will re-post to please people
I am dismayed by the snobbery shown on here.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 16-Dec-23 13:20:44

The question was asked. People have answered.

Ziplok Sat 16-Dec-23 13:27:06

To think something looks silly or naff doesn’t make someone a snob. It’s all down to personal opinion and personal likes and dislikes.

Oldnproud Sat 16-Dec-23 13:44:27

I don't think I am a snob, but I agree with well over 90% of the opinions voiced on this thread.

Patsy70 Sat 16-Dec-23 14:11:51

NanKate

You have haven’t offended me Sago however I have been known to say settee. 😏

Witzend 👍

I had a yellow VW Lupo 23 years ago and loved it! 🤔

M0nica Sat 16-Dec-23 14:22:27

Annesixty no snobbery here, or very little, but a lot of tongue in cheekery.

I think this 'naff' list started with a high class interior designer Nicky Haslam. he prints a different list on a drying-upcloth each year and sells them for charity.

Here is a link to this year's list, and the commenst of the magazine publishing itthetab.com/uk/2023/11/08/nicky-haslam-common-list-2023-336784

Family photos on walls. I am happy for them on mantlepieces or sideboards but NOT the walls. Hideous and tasteless. And decoupage photos. AWFUL. Girl baby headbands - ridiculous. Young men with trouser crotch so low it shows their underwear. Thigh boots - SO common except on fishermen. I agree with Calendargirl about bonding. And yes, Witzend, too many things to mention.
