Fed up of seeing Acronyms in comments

Why does everyone, when making comments on social media or sites like these always use Acronyms. DH, dear husband, DD, dear daughter, it drives me bonkers. Have people forgotten how to write in a normal fashion, the way comments or stories should be written.

It makes no wonder that children and many adults cannot spell because they are too busy shortening words. Is it because they don't have time to write dear husband, or dear daughter or is it just laziness.

I also think that if you are going to start a thread criticising writing style, it is wise to check that you have not made a grammatical howler in the title, missed out question marks and inserted random capital letters.
Just saying.....

Well said!

TBF, as MerylStreep gave a link to the meaning a couple of days ago, I’m tempted to write RTFT (not really, I just wanted to put in more abbreviations. Especially a sweary one).

My google search for the long acronym came up with nothing so Dickens it isn’t as easy as you presumed
Perhaps someone can write it out so we can all join in the laughter not just the few in the *acronyms club*

Here it is:

FOTTFSOFATFOSM

f... off to the far side of f.... and then f... off some more

Much more effective when seen in context on a mumsnet thread.

I'm wondering where our Opening Poster (OP) has gone.

Purplepixie Sun 31-Dec-23 08:46:54

Each to their own.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 31-Dec-23 08:41:15

Indeed Mamie.

^An acronym is an abbreviation that forms a word. An initialism is an abbreviation that uses the first letter of each word in the phrase (thus, some but not all initialisms are acronyms).^
Maybe better if they were all referred to as abbreviations.

Mollygo, many of us have stated this over the years, but GNHQ TNNOABOAOB.

I did quite like the OP's random capitalisation of Acronym. Sounded like a slightly mysterious place name. 😂😂😂

Oh please someone tell me what FOTTFSOFATFOSM means! I won't sleep tonight if I don't find out. I've tried looking it up but haven't found it yet...sad

... and Parsley3

Just paste the acronym into Google, or whichever... it'll come up!

Wow - I had to Google twice because my first search results were for a number of Chiropody clinics near Stockholm, such as Fokuspåfoten
grin

My Google search came up with sofa beds and footstools!

Grammaretto Sun 31-Dec-23 06:57:32

I noticed that too Notagran
Acronyms are words formed from initials such as
NATO
LASER
LOL
UNESCO
RAM
PIN
Guessing initials is fun infuriating

NotAGran55 Sun 31-Dec-23 06:38:04

The funniest thing about the thread is that the OP talks of acronyms and clearly doesn’t know what one is!
(Along with many other people who have subsequently commented 😃)
Abbreviations and initialisations aren’t acronyms.

Grammaretto Sun 31-Dec-23 06:18:54

Mamie 🤣 very true

Hear, hear.
This thread has provided a few laughs but ultimately has become a case of CBATLDR

SueDonim

I have never trained as a typist, therefore my typing is relatively slow. Acronyms online originated in the days of text messages, when there was a limit on character numbers, to keep costs down.

Do acronym-haters also type out National Health Service or British Broadcasting Corporation instead of NHS or BBC?

Your last paragraph made me laugh SueDonim. I wonder if acronym-haters not only type them out but say them in full too.
GrannyGrunter, by all means dislike them if you want, but it’s not lazy, anymore than using shorthand was (though that took longer to learn).
My Y2 children, although they are taught what it means, are very grateful to only have to write RNLI when the topic is Grace Darling.
Are you even condemning scientists working in that field, who always write out or say Deoxyribonucleic acid instead of DNA?
Are you claiming that only lazy people
use chemical acronyms like
NaH 2PO4 instead of the full name of the chemical compound?
Perhaps you’d even say I must stop teaching children to sing the water song,
“Did you know that H2O is just a name for water?” 🤣🤣🤣
Fine if you don’t like them, but a sweeping condemnation of those who do as lazy is rather unkind and self-congratulatory.

biglouis Sun 31-Dec-23 01:30:23

If you go over to Mumsnet you will find that they even have Ddogs and Dcats.

Dinahmo Sat 30-Dec-23 23:09:31

I started to read this and got to page 4 and then stopped. Does it really matter? GrannyGrunter do as you wish and lave everyone to do as they wish. Please note - I used your full name because there is already a GG on here.

Marydoll Sat 30-Dec-23 22:53:40

I really don't care! I am my own woman and I quite like using them. 😂

^When at University/training it was always drummed into us that you do not use acronyms (or at the very least you must in the first instance write the full text with the acronym in brackets after) - permissible then to use the acronym in the same body of text.^

Despite many of us here on GN having been to university, it hasn't stopped us using abbreviations. We know what they mean, no need to explain ( in the first instance. ) 😉

👏🏻 Marydoll - oops maybe emojis are disapproved of too! 😉

Callistemon21 Sat 30-Dec-23 22:45:54

Perhaps we should start a Guess the Acronym thread!!

ixion Sat 30-Dec-23 22:44:14

"Fokuspåfoten" - which means focus on the foot.

So, just the one foot then! grin
