Anyone else in on their own tonight? Not invited by best friend

Hi

I’ve been divorced a long time and normally get invited to spend NYE with my best friend and her husband which I have done for about the last 15 years.
However this year I have not been invited. I did ask her what she was doing and she did t reply and then mentioned a few weeks later that they might be going away. I know they haven’t gone away and they clearly just didn’t want to ask me.

I know I have no right to expect to be invited to their house but I am really hurt. I am also not used to spending NYE on my own and feel very lonely and sorry for myself. I know it’s just another night.

Anyway for anyone else spending it on your own like me have a nice night and here’s to a fresh start in 2024.

How was your NYE Optomistic1 ?
I hope you have got over your disappointment.

There may have been no lying, maybe they were thinking of going away but plans were changed. I suppose her husband may have remarked that he would like the evening to themselves and she went along with his wishes.
I definitely wouldn’t break the friendship up a lot of changes happen over 15 years

i spent christmas and hogmanay on my own, i did my usual traditions of opening the door and the windows, making sure i had food on the table then spent a few hours online (youtube) watching things and listening to music, i am still humming some of the drifters songs today. maybe next year you could think about having some friends to yours or even going away for a few days. there will have been thousands of people on there own last night, just take some time to look around and tell yourself you are brilliant and so what if you have a new year on your own, you have a whole year to plan for 2025. happy new year and all the best for 2024.

Can’t beat this!

I took the same turning, as homes with cats should have been included.

Spent this New Year's Eve comforting two scared cats alone. Next New Year's Eve I shall invite friends.

Optimistic - why don't you invite friends over for New Year's Eve?

Ours was a quiet night in just my Husband and myself it was our choice. We had bee invited to friends but declined as Mr J had major surgery a few months ago and we just wanted a relaxing evening. Did not fancy a late night and lots of drinking! It was just as we wanted it and we woke up refreshed having gone to bed at our normal. time.

Just a thought Optomistic but maybe, after hosting NYE for 15 years, they were hoping that you might return the favour and offer to host them this year instead?

I was thinking this.

Happy New Year to you all. We also had a quiet evening, courtesy of the Virus. There was an online Christmas event for GNs. Might it be worth having something similar for next Hogmanay? People alone at home could pop in and chat.

the fireworks went on for hours here and I thought Rod Stewart was rubbish blush

Optimistic, I'm sure there are lot of us who don't bother with new year. I'm sure you friend hasn't meant to hurt your feelings flowers

I have been on my own for more years than I care to remember. I have not seen or spoken to anybody face to face for many days but it does not bother me.

I had a paella last night, opened a bottle of wine, watched rubbish TV and then went to bed to read my book. I lead a simple life, doing what I want when I want.

I have little family left and they are in Southern Ireland and friends are miles away.

When I read some of the horror stories on GN I am more than happy to be able to please myself.

It is sad, OP. But I had the same thought as FannyFanerkpan.

Since my husband died nearly 20 years ago never stayed up to see the new year as normally in bed between 9-10. Today is just a normal day . Will take the tree and decorations down but leave the cards for a few more days. To me it's just a normal Monday except no sit fit class. Happy new year everyone.

Optomistic - don’t be sad. Your friend probably didn’t feel like celebrating this year, for whatever reason. They were probably planning to go away but something got in the way. Don’t break your friendship because of this. I too am divorced, but my d.I.l’s parents have kindly asked me over for the past couple of years. Before that , I used to stay alone in bed, watching the various celebrations on TV. Have a good 2024 everybody. I am a night owl. Happy 2024🎉🎉💐

Apart from one or two spent abroad Ive been on my own for NYE since I left the parental home. Trying to go anywhere in winter without a car is just too much of a hassle. I watched the London spectacular firework display on TV and some of the earlier ones son U-Tube. Then I rang nephew and we had a small drink and toasted in NY. He is coming down tomorrow and bringing dinner so we will share a bottle of wine. I also texted a few people and some replied.

Glad all the flummery is over for another year.

I'm with NanKate. Including the dratted fireworks- started hours ago.

The Hootenanny has got off to a good start. Good old Rod!

Moonwatcher1904 Sun 31-Dec-23 23:31:38

There's only me and DH sat here and will put Hootenanny on in a bit. He has a glass of brandy and coke and I've a glass of Rose wine. I'm going to pour a glass of Advocaat out to see the new year in. I know it sounds daft but I need to read my electric meter at midnight as the tariff changes from the 1st. The crazy things we do.... smile

Grammaretto Sun 31-Dec-23 23:14:29

I've been on my own all day and all night.
I went out for a walk while it was light and called in for some last minute supplies at the community store/café.
I saw a woman I know slightly. She looked so sad. I joined her for a chat over her lunch and she told me how she is caring for her DH who has dementia. Her DD was with him to allow her a break. She told me my company had been a tonic.

I went home, heated my spag bol, poured a glass of wine and lit the fire.
I've been watching old TV episodes and feeling quite content.

It is a shame that your friends have stopped their invitation but maybe they just needed a break this year.
Try not to take it to heart.

Oh I do every year but they have dogs so won’t leave them…. If she’d been honest with me and said we want to spend it on our own I would have been fine with that! It’s the fact that she’s said they were going away and they haven’t and she’s not mentioned it since!

I wouldn't break your friendship with her over this. It really has been lovely of her to invite you for 15 years solid. They probably wanted the night alone but after so many years didn't know how to tell you. Lying obviously isn't the thing to do but perhaps she got herself in a tizzy about it all. See how she is going forward before you cut her off.

NanKate Sun 31-Dec-23 22:26:27

It’s just another night to me. We did have a nice roast duck supper, then DH took himself off to his office and I settled down to watch the Agatha Christie two parter and found it reasonably entertaining.

I’m tucked up in bed now will drift off to sleep soon and then will be woken by the dratted fireworks 🧨 at midnight.

It’s a shame your friends weren’t honest with you Opto Try and let the disappointment pass now, there are worse things going on in the world than no invitation. 💐

As woodenspoon says they might just want to spend a New Years Eve alone just the two of them, which is fair enough.
Try not to feel upset by it, or over think it. Definitely don’t break off your friendship over it, it is as you say just another night.

I hope you have a pleasant evening, as for me I’ll be off to bed soon.

I am on my own, second without DH. I don’t mind not doing anything but miss him terribly. I feel lonely even though my family are good, son is at a party and SIL and daughter who is 6 months pregnant home with toddler.
We all went out for brunch today and tomorrow I am cooking lunch for us all so I feel lucky.
It’s hard being on your own but many people do it, tomorrow is another day.
