Hi

I’ve been divorced a long time and normally get invited to spend NYE with my best friend and her husband which I have done for about the last 15 years.
However this year I have not been invited. I did ask her what she was doing and she did t reply and then mentioned a few weeks later that they might be going away. I know they haven’t gone away and they clearly just didn’t want to ask me.

I know I have no right to expect to be invited to their house but I am really hurt. I am also not used to spending NYE on my own and feel very lonely and sorry for myself. I know it’s just another night.

Anyway for anyone else spending it on your own like me have a nice night and here’s to a fresh start in 2024.

I intend to watch Rick Astley on BBC TV,you are welcome to join me!
Perhaps your friends just fancied a quiet non event night? I think a lot of people haven't been feeling very festive this year.I hope 2024 will be an improvement on 2023

Hello Optomistic, sorry you're disappointed and upset at being on your own after so many years.

I'm spending my 6th NYE on my own; (my DH died in 2018). I just have to accept that family and friends have other plans, (anyway, my DD and husband are in Belfast with his family). My DS works shifts and as he had Christmas off it is highly likely that he is working this holiday.
I am lucky enough that they all spent Christmas with me and we had a lovely time last week.

I have a nice dinner lined up, have just had a cocktail, and may open a bottle of fizz. Plenty to watch on tv, and will see the New Year in, as I am usually a night owl.

Hoping that you can make the best of it, and wishing you a Happy New Year. xx

I’m sorry you’ve been treated this way. She should have at least been honest with you. Time to reflect the friendship, perhaps.

DH and I are just going to be in together, the weather totally disrupted our plans and we can’t be bothered to organise something else.

Have a good evening and indulge yourself. Happy New Year.

On my own as it has been for 5 yrs. I might just go to bed at my usual time unless the tv is riveting.

Happy New Year all. 😘

Don’t feel sad about being on your own, optimistic. There are loads of us in the same boat so embrace being able to watch what you like on telly, eat and drink what you like, finish the Christmas choccies, sing along, dance around the coffee table or just relax with your favourite tipple.

Cheers! 🥳🍷

Maybe they just want an early night this year.. I certainly do..

kittylester Sun 31-Dec-23 19:03:57

I'm with pascal.

Luckily I gave dh here and we are happy to doze in front of whatever is on the tv.

It’s easy to feel sensitive in a situation like this but perhaps the friendship, like the NY arrangement has outlived its usefulness. Sad, but we move on
If they have actually been less than honest with you, then all the more reason to dump these “friends”

RosiesMaw Sun 31-Dec-23 19:22:54

Can’t beat this!

Bea65 Sun 31-Dec-23 19:23:13

This is when you realise this person is not your best friend- had similar reality check earlier this year- you and several of us here are alone on NY eve- stay strong and wish you a Healthy 2024 and better friendships- yes friends do disappoint us greatly- Karma and warm 🤗🤗

I agree, friends don’t lie to each other, as the kids in Stranger Things say.
I’m not alone but may as well be as DP is already snoring away on the sofa😁 not that we usually do anything much on NYE anyway.Am just sitting down to watch Antiques Roadshow and have a glass of red wine to hand.

Don’t be too hard on friend maybe they just wanted to do nothing together. You can have a nice time lots of suggestions given, have some nice food and a new year drink. Happy new year to everyone wine

Grandmabatty Sun 31-Dec-23 20:06:47

I'm on my own too. I have been for a number of years. I don't mind being alone and have plans that involve tv and a small drink. Have a Happy New Year when it comes.

MiniMoon Sun 31-Dec-23 20:07:30

I'm watching the Antiques Roadshow with the cat on my lap. We are waiting for my husband to come home from work. He has requested scrambled egg on toast and a snowball for his supper.
I'll make a snowball for both of us.
I don't think we will stay up until midnight to see in the new year. We don't have the staying power any more.
I'm sorry you are on your own, have a virtual drink with us. Happy New Year🍷

notoveryet Sun 31-Dec-23 20:16:17

I'm on my own, well apart from my dogs and cats and my dd dog, I've opened a bottle of wine and am honestly feeling a little lonely and missing my dh who died 5 years ago. But life goes on so happy new year to all who are struggling a bit tonight.

flappergirl Sun 31-Dec-23 20:18:34

I haven't done anything for NYE for many years. DH died in 2016 which leaves me, the cat and my disabled son who currently has stomach problems. To be fair it was very nice of your best friend to include you for so many years. As a widow I have found that couple friends only want to be with other couples. or each other. She should have been honest though but after 15 years that is going to be quite difficult. Have a`drink and watch something cheesy on TV. Here's wishing you a very happy new year.

BigBertha1 Sun 31-Dec-23 20:21:45

Well not on my own but we are not doing much. You would be welcome to sit and watch tv with us with a glass of wine. Usual bedtime to enjoy a book. Happy New Year

Optomistic1 Sun 31-Dec-23 20:26:48

Thank you so much everyone for your very kind words and suggestions. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.
I live on my own and am normally very happy but there is something about NYE that made me feel like the only person in the UK spending it own their own , which I know is ridiculous!

That coupled with the disappointment of my friend which has made me re think our friendship to be honest.

Happy new year to you all whatever you are doing.

Xx

sodapop Sun 31-Dec-23 20:34:43

Happy New Year to you too Optomistic for what it's worth I think your friend was very remiss in not telling you why her plans were different this year.
You are a strong woman don't let it get you down. winethanks

FannyFanackerpan Sun 31-Dec-23 20:37:06

Just a thought Optomistic but maybe, after hosting NYE for 15 years, they were hoping that you might return the favour and offer to host them this year instead?

isla1 Sun 31-Dec-23 20:38:35

hello

BlueBelle Sun 31-Dec-23 20:38:46

I ve had NYE on my own for years had a Turkish meal out earlier now grandkids gone to pub etc but that’s fine I usually treat it as a normal night and just go to bed my usual time somehow seems more lonely to stay up and see the jubilations than just going to bed as per norm
It’s a new year tomorrow it might even prove better optimistic who knows ……..cheers 🍷
