WHY ARE THREADS' HEADINGS BEING CAPITALIZED?

Just that. It's rude.

Aesthetics aside, I'm just grateful for the correct application of the apostrophe.

In which case, GSM, may I suggest that you don't do today's Wordle or peruse too closely another current thread heading?
😉

Take a look at my post of 7.34 and you will see that my post was not aimed at just one poster, I really wouldn't have bothered had there just been one post.

And yes, current internet etiquette is of the opinion that typing in capitals on social media is rude.

I'm finding the thread quite entertaining.

I understood that the etiquette applied to direct responses or initial posts, where it is considered the equivalent of someone shouting.

However, a heading in a forum is a caption - a banner headline, which is designed to capture attention. Which is a different thing all together, isn't it?

As far as I know, no one ever writes or types a letter in all caps (unless they have an impairment), so it is obviously not the 'done thing' to create a post or message in this way. But a headline or sub-heading? When I write to any organisation where there is the necessity to include identifying information, I often include caps in the heading so the recipient can see it clearly without having to search for it. I am sure they don't think I'm being rude.

Do you think the posters of the headlines are being intentionally rude, or just using the caps as a narrative technique?

That you find the thread "entertaining" makes me think you wanted to stir up a little controversy for amusement.

Small mercies, ixion. I don’t favour the use of the letter ‘z’ in ‘capitalised’ though - something I always view as an Americanism.

It's a literary device, sometimes used in books, pamphlets and magazines - and newspapers - to capitalise a heading.

You might not approve, but it is not "rude".

What is rude is to address no one in particular but everyone in general with an accusation of rudeness, when you can see quite clearly the originator of the topic. Why not address them directly - you must have known you'd garner some goady replies - like mine? grin

Mountains and molehills come to mind.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jan-24 10:43:47

Nothing wrong with your heading Terribull. I don’t see why a thread title shouldn’t be typed in capitals - it draws attention to it. Bugger aesthetics!

Is this really something to complain about? ‘Very ugly’? I don’t look at GN expecting to find beauty and harmony in the layout of threads.

Hear, hear!

ugly ?

Aesthetics should be the least of our problems. And hardly something to fuss about.

TerriBull Tue 02-Jan-24 10:11:12

Thanks Parsley, Marydoll and Sparkefizz. Whilst I do see the poster's point of view to an extent, I just didn't give the aesthetics, or lack of them in my title a lot of thought at the time. I won't ponder on it anymore other than to make a mental note not to capitalise another thread in the same way.

polomint Tue 02-Jan-24 10:06:14

Who cares? I think capital letters are just to make you notice. I don't regard them as shouting although according to the younger generation it is. Just modern technology etiquette. I read recently that to be posh you now say " what". I was taught to say " pardon"

I don't think it's rude, Terri. Please don't let it bother you.
It might be rude, if a whole post was in capitals, but not a heading. When I see a heading in capitals, I just assume it is a literary device used for emphasis and to attract attention, which I think you were trying to do.

Exactly! I agree.

henetha Tue 02-Jan-24 09:57:45

It's not really important. I always thought capitals meant shouting on here. But it doesn't bother me much.
Happy new year smile

Spinnaker Tue 02-Jan-24 09:54:28

Dearie me have we nothing better to get worked up about ? Back in the day when learning to type (RSA standard), all headings, once centralised (one backspace per two letters) were in capitals.

NannyJan53 Tue 02-Jan-24 09:51:33

This is the only post I have seen that has Capital letters in the heading??

JustinJames Tue 02-Jan-24 09:51:10

that's good.

OldFrill Tue 02-Jan-24 09:08:16

Good grief

Elegran Tue 02-Jan-24 09:05:10

Apart from several Games threads, which have been there in capitals for ages without anyone getting hot and bothered, I can see "SCABIES!" and "AGEING PARENTS" as well as the book one and this. I can understand the scabies being capitalised as a warning, and ageing parents do bring out the same kind of feeling as scabies in some posters. That doesn't add up to an awful lot.

fancythat Tue 02-Jan-24 09:00:48

No.

Juliet27 Tue 02-Jan-24 08:49:01

Not a good start to the new year is it.

fancythat Tue 02-Jan-24 08:46:13

This is the 2nd or 3rd thread where people seem to be out of sorts.
Not quite the normal amenable GN.

Presumably just the time of year.

I am partly staying away.
Dont wish to get drawn in.
Want peace!

Just like this one sassyetc ?
(Having deleted Games threads) I see precisely 2 and one is yours.

You couldn’t make it up.
Do some people have nothing better to do at 6.30 in the morning?

Clawdy Tue 02-Jan-24 08:22:06

The whole format of the forums has changed on my tablet now - totally different font. Anyone else?
