What is the perceived threat if photos are posted of babies, toddlers and young children if their faces are shown?
We have so many photos of the backs of children or their faces blurred. If the Prince and Princess of Wales are not bothered (Harry and Meghan don’t allow it of course..) why is the rest of the world so concerned?
Maybe I’m being naïve, but I’d like to be enlightened.

Schools often show photos of their pupils on their website, obviously with permission not in my school, or L.A. I can assure you. Only back view and no names were allowed.

If you had attended as many safeguarding and internet safety courses (many organised by the police and CEOP) as I have, you would not be suggesting that we are hysterical.

I also served on L.A internet safety working parties, our L.A. took it very seriously and rightly so. Some very inoccuous webites for children, turned out to be a cover for paedophiles.
In my school at the start of the Autumn term, the ICT programme focussed solely on internet safety for six weeks.

Furthermore, you would not believe how foolish and naive some parents are.
Alerted by a parent, I came across the Facebook profile of an eight year old pupil , posing provocatively in a bikini. Eight year olds are not legally allowed a Facebook profile. Her mother had set it up.
Sadly, these things are happening every day.

I fear we have turned into a country where so many believe there is a paedophile hiding behind every hedge and the default position is distrust of people, usually men. Statistically most abusers are family members or friends. Daily Mail readers and red tops go around suspiciously on the lookout for rapists. Bird watchers can’t take photos and photographers generally have to be on their guard. It’s rather sad.

Schools often show photos of their pupils on their website, obviously with permission and like to charge for DVDs of nativity plays as photos may not be allowed. A nice little earner.

It’s refreshing to be in a country like Spain where this hysteria has not taken hold….yet.

You cannot legally give her those images. It is a breach of GDPR.

This reminds me of another saga with my needy neighbour.

We have a private roadway behind our houses where kids from the local school often congregate in groups. They are mostly Asian children (teens) and maybe its difficult for boys to meet girls in their culture. Thats not my problem and I am not here to police meetings by Moslem children.

They sometimes leave cigarette buts, coke cans etc (which my gardener clears upon his monthly visits). The children can see the cctv warning and they choose to come down the roadway so they are informed about the presence of cameras.

My neighbour asked me if I could let her have pictures of any children who pass my house so she can contact the school and complain. I refused because it was not my place to distribute pictures of children who happened to pass by my doorbell camera. There was no proof that these were the same children who were leaving the mess.

She got angry and said "If you have these pictures anyway why not let me have them". Well the pictures are autodeleted after 30 days and I have no intention of keeping them or passing them on to third parties. I told her I would only pass on copies of the pictures to the police so she would have to contact them about the matter.

Ive several times been contacted by police officers investigating a local incident where intruders may have passed along the private road.

Somehow I dont think the police are going to co-operate. I have no wish to have angry Asian parents demanding to know why I am distributing pictures of their children to random people.

Same here Galaxy. Knocks the edges off you. My daughters used to tease me when I checked out their swimming/gymnastics/drama/horse riding etc tutors. Now their children are joining those kind of activities, they do as much checking and observation as I ever did

What has the natural checking of tutors for our children got to do with the photo of a baby?🤔

Are you deliberately being naive? How can you not have seen what has been going on for years and years.

Galaxy Wed 03-Jan-24 13:10:21

We have explained the numerous reasons why there are issues regarding photos of children online.

I can well understand estrangement/domestic issues giving rise to this, but it has reached a point in the art groups on FB etc which I belong to, where beautiful paintings from the past including babies and children can be censored, or there are outcries from (usually American) members.
It really makes me wonder what goes on in the heads of people these days.

It's nothing to do with purity of mind, in my case its 30 plus years of working in the social care field.

hollysteers Wed 03-Jan-24 12:25:52

Thanks for comments. Obviously my mind is a lot purer than many of our wise gransnetters on here😄😇
I have no personal interest in this, but thought it might be part of the heightened paranoia we seem to live with these days.

vegansrock Wed 03-Jan-24 12:07:54

The RF have to be seen to be believed - it’s their job to be photographed and seen in public, you can’t extrapolate from them to anyone else.

Fleurpepper Wed 03-Jan-24 12:03:57

Thinking about it- I truly feel uncomfortable when people share on Facebook or other social media- scans of unborn babies.

flappergirl Wed 03-Jan-24 11:36:40

Because babies and children cannot, or do not fully understand, consent.

You wouldn't plaster pictures of a relative all over social media if they were opposed to it. Children and babies have no voice or choice in the matter. It is immoral to disregard their choices and treat them as property.

Because their images could be hijacked and used for child porn. It happens a lot.

Because the images may be identifiable by an estranged or violent partner or relative.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are already in the public domaine. It is their job. It would be almost impossible and extremely unpopular for them to hide their high profile children from the public gaze. They are not Mr & Mrs Jones of 42 Acacia Avenue and they have the best security in the land including M15 and M16. It is daft to use them as an example of anything relating to every day life.

Fleurpepper Wed 03-Jan-24 11:12:26

I am always amazed that grand-parents publish photos of their grandchildren on social media, including GN.

In our family, it is an agreed NO- and fully respected- unless face blurred or hidden. I always ask permission first.

Katie59 Wed 03-Jan-24 10:11:56

Many of us are “innocent” and don’t realize how a photo can be copied from a website, Facebook for instance, you can copy a photo of someone’s friend, store it on your computer and use it how you want if you are malicious.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 03-Jan-24 10:06:15

I don’t think Princess Beatrice’s daughter has ever been seen in the media. Always a back view.

annodomini Wed 03-Jan-24 10:00:44

I have only once put a photo of a GC on line - she was 17 and beautifully dressed for the school prom. Had she been much younger, she might have been crudely described as 'jail bait'. That is why, boast as I may about my gorgeous toddler GGD, you won't ever see a photo of her here.

Parsley3 Wed 03-Jan-24 09:54:53

The Prince and Princess of Wales are very bothered about their children being photographed and that is why only official photos or those taken at public events are published.
I hope the perceived threat has been well enough explained above to be understood by the OP.

Why not use some other medium, WhatsApp? to send photos to friends.

karmalady Wed 03-Jan-24 09:37:57

AI can be used to put these pictures of children on very realistic, made-up, videos, showing horrific child abuse for the perverted in our society

MerylStreep Wed 03-Jan-24 09:37:22

BlueBelle

Are you seriously asking this ?
Pictures can be easily used for child abuse and other illegal anti social behaviour have you never heard of women who fall in love and are fleeced out of large sums of money by men who steal a picture and become that person
Harry and Meghan quite rightly don’t want their children maligned, pored over for every little flaw, or used for criminal intent Same reason we never see or hear Johnson’s new brood
Gosh you sound very innocent with this question

Exactly!!! Some folk just wander around in La La land 🤷‍♀️

DillytheGardener Wed 03-Jan-24 09:32:01

Son doesn’t allow pictures of GC online because you don’t know who is viewing or sharing them. Images can be doctored and photoshopped by sex offenders. Also your location can be given away by the metadata on the photo. Gen Z are apparently statistically very high in identity theft figures because of the all the information given out in photo posts, their dob, full name etc all given in birth announcements, birthday posts etc.

I was disappointed of course not to be able to show off to friends about gc like everyone I know seems to, but having read a little into I think it’s a good idea not to.

TerriBull Wed 03-Jan-24 08:53:51

Aside from all the relevant points already raised, on a minor note, the child/baby adult can't give an informed choice as to whether or not they want their images displayed on a public forum and may in the future take their parents to task for doing so. If any of us go back through our own childhood photos would we have wanted them put up for perusal if such a method was available way back in the mists of time.?
