(Over)sharing pictures

I understand the wish to share experiences with our friends.
But am I alone in wishing my mobile inbox had NOT got clogged up with the entire holiday snaps from my WhatsApp friend’s recent 6 week holiday?
Or seeing a couple of nice pics on a FB post - the final one bearing the dreaded inscription “+36”

Your friend does want to share her travel experience with you (and others?) thinking you will rejoice in her good fortune.

That’s not always the case. Social media has created these “over sharers” who feel the need to “keep up with the Jones’s”. Some of us, if not most, could care less.

What it has produced is a glut of meaningless nothingness… then how about adding all my pictures?

If you know your friends and family just share one or two really lovely shots that will be appreciated. If they want more, then you can send more.

I REALLY dislike social media, much preferring one-on-one communication.

I have just deleted 1,798 photos from my Whatsapp account! (Kept procrastinating about clearing them). Many from friends, including memes, jokes, pictures of holidays, people I hardly knew, etc
My phone is so much happier now, as am I ! wink

I wish they would stop doing it. It drove me mad during Lockdown, when they kept sending funny videos, which clogged up my phone.

We've sat through slides, cine film, and albums of photos which friends and relatives have wanted to share with us. I made my cousin cross by falling asleep during her holiday video. I'm glad that they want to show us, but how much better when skipping through the offerings at your own speed!

I had a friend who always bored showed me photos of her great grandchildren, even little bits of film showing them counting to ten at two years old and I was required to say how clever they were admire that skill. Sadly this friend has died now and despite those little aspects of her character, I miss her.

There is nobody in my life who does this on WhatsApp! I don’t have a FB account, my lovely goddaughter deleted it for me (I never looked at it) recently. I’m very happy 😊.

Years ago some invited friends to see their holiday videos or slides, I don’t suppose that happens much these days, they are just put on Facebook.

Much less of an ordeal

You don’t need to store them if you receive them on WhatsApp. Alter your settings for each group who sends them and only select those whose photos you want to save to your camera roll. Much easier and then you don’t clog up your phone and don’t need to keep going through and deleting them.

I am in the fortunate position that none of my friends do this.

It would drive me mad if they did!

But at least we are not in the company of the sender when the photos arrive, which is a blessing.

Remember the days of the cine-films? When you had to watch someone's entire fortnight's holiday during evening coffee at their house?

Callistemon21 Thu 11-Jan-24 15:48:55

Yes, there is too much over sharing generally these days!

However, this thread reminded me of when we used to visit an Aunt and Uncle of DH at Christmas and, after lunch, were settled down in the best front room, out came the projector and slides and we were subjected to enjoyed a very long slide show of their holidays with commentary.

I have two friends that do this. The younger friend is like your friend, Funnygran and puts up photos of everything her family does and is seems to be an awful lot. If there isn’t anything else, she will post “memories.” Her two children have had their lives posted on Facebook. She is a lovely person, but I think it is unwise to post so many photos of her children on social media in this way,

Fortunately you don't need to look at them!
I also love seeing pictures of my grandchildren, my children no longer use Facebook but Instagram and tend to edit the photos down to the best ones. It is hard to decide which to keep, but who wants to store 40 extra pictures on their computers? It just makes it more difficult to find the ones you like.

You do if they’ve been shared via WhatsApp - that was my complaint - blocked up data storage full of holiday pics “shared” by a friend !
I’ve spent 3/4 of an hour trying to delete them all from my phone!

Funnygran Thu 11-Jan-24 14:17:07

One of my Facebook friends does a daily update of everything that she, husband and daughter have done the day before. Usually accompanied by photos of exactly what she was wearing or what she cooked. I’m afraid I’ve stopped looking at them. My son tells me I can ‘mute’ her but he’ll have to show me how to do it!

Babsbada Thu 11-Jan-24 14:02:02

2 or 3 photos fine but no more please. Why do people do it? Honestly beyond me!

Can't bear photos, unless they are of dogs and cats being amusing/beautiful. Who wants to see someone else's holiday snaps? They all look the same anyway! Grandchildren only look cute to grannies - I love mine but would never bore anyone else with their photos - if you want to see them, visit my downstairs loo!

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more 👏👏👏

I love every pic I’m sent of GCs, ACs, and friends. I’m happy to look at my friends’ photos, I just love to see them so proudly showing off pics of their GCs. It’s part of being a family and friend.

After a recent neighbours' party outside last summer (I think it was the Coronation) two kind souls put up 50+ photos of the event. Most of us are long past the time when we wish to see photos of ourselves, though the Red Arrows were interesting!

I have a friend who has documented her 4 month olds life from day one from his birth until now (and probably will go on) on both insta and FB which I really can't understand at all

Friends, relatives...sharing their happiness...what's not to like?...

Pix of grandchildren ✔✔✔
Six weeks worth of somebody touring Europe clogging up my data storage? Less so.

No one can force you to look at pics you don't want to look at.

You can delete them if they cause a data storage issue. Maybe save one to remind you what it was about.

Lona Thu 11-Jan-24 11:38:10

Oh yes, I so agree Rosie’sMaw
There’s one of those friends in our WApp group and then we get the same 48 snaps on FB too! 🙄🙄

Annsan Thu 11-Jan-24 11:31:58

Couldn’t agree more!!!!!L

Quizzer Thu 11-Jan-24 11:25:14

I really don’t need to see pics of what you have cooked or are eating in a “fantastic” restaurant on a daily basis. Come to think of it, I don’t want to see them at all!
