Katie Hopkins on Kate Garraway.

Katie Hopkins as been quite rightly castigated after a viscous rant about Kate Garraway.

I do however feel that KG did parade her husband during his battle with Covid, it felt too intrusive to watch in an ICU bed intubated and hooked up to all kinds of support.

I’m sure he was not in a position to give his consent.

His recovery and return home was also put in the public domain, in my opinion it was too much.
There are apparently books and documentaries too.

I have never watched anything KG has presented or appeared in, I only know her as Derek Drapers wife, for which she now more famous for.

Should she have allowed Derek the dignity that Michael Schumacher has been allowed, his family have shown such love, care and respect, or was KG right to use her late husband to promote awareness?

Sara1954 when you deeply care and love someone there are very few lengths that you will not go to when they are in an extreme situation and utterly dependent on you for survival.

Out of interest do those people that think it was wrong of Kate to use her husband to promote awareness of long covid also think the publicity that Rob Burrow is getting for motor neurone disease wrong also? Or the lovely lady who garnered so much publicity for bowel cancer? Can anyone explain if there is a difference and, if so what is it.

IMO no difference whatsoever.

IMO, sorry to say it, but I think Katie Hopkins is utterly vile and publicity seeking

Galaxy Fri 19-Jan-24 09:39:21

It's to do with consent cossy, I havent followed the Rob Burrow case but certainly Deborah James was able to provide consent. It's an issue for those of us who work with or know people where we are almost 'guessing' consent.

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-24 09:53:33

Only those on life support should say when it should cease ?

A huge difference!
Rob Burrows and Dame Deborah James are fully aware and in complete control of their actions.
When KG first started her campaign DD was not in a position to give consent.

Monica
Yes I understand that, and maybe the whole family were happy with the exposure, but I only know my husband would have hated it, and would have found it deeply humiliating, as would I.
It’s not really a criticism of Kate, she has been in a heartbreaking situation, and has obviously done what she felt was best.

I am also glad that Sago (the OP) has raised this.

I agree with everything in the post. I thought it was just me who felt negatively towards the way KG paraded her husband and his illness.

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-24 11:28:48

Would your husband have hated it if it had given him more time with his wife and children?

HeavenLeigh Fri 19-Jan-24 11:43:09

Germanshepherdsmum totally agree with your posts

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 11:52:45

Thank you.

For myself and my husband dignity would be a huge issue.
I think that awareness could have been raised and KG could have done what she did without DD having to be paraded like he was.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 12:48:24

I agree.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jan-24 12:53:20

My husband would want to be kept alive at any costs. I on the other hand would not. Individuals vary greatly on this issue and we are therefore guessing their views if they are unable to give them.

pinkquartz Fri 19-Jan-24 13:06:07

I agree 100% with Monica.

These are media people. They have a different perspective to anyone else's point of view. Clearly they do not want to hide away to protect any feelings. They have been brave to not join in with those declaring Covid as something like a cold.
not for everyone it isn't !

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-24 13:12:47

I was 33 years old when my husband died, this perhaps helps me not to judge Kate Garraway

Judy54 Fri 19-Jan-24 14:40:35

Thank you for sharing that AnnieBach it puts things into perspective for many who still have their Husband's into old age. There was no opportunity for the two of you to grow old together.

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-24 14:50:40

Thank you Judy Our daughters were age 5 and 7 years old ,
thinking back to how I felt then, I don’t think dignity would be
the reason to let him die

Derek Draper verbally agreed to the documentaries being made.
So how was he 'paraded' without consent? And his wife is now being vilified!
He verbally consented and it's in the first documentary.

In the early days in hospital I don’t see how he could ever have given consent.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jan-24 16:41:07

I am not vilifying anyone, I dont mean to sound harsh but I am not particularly interested in KG, I am interested in hiw we as a society judge the capacity to give consent and what we do for those who cant verbally or in other ways give consent.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 16:41:24

Nor do I - and he couldn’t possibly have known how his condition would develop. He changed from being a very sick man in hospital to a helpless, doubly incontinent man dependent on others for everything in his own home.

OldFrill Fri 19-Jan-24 17:38:23

Kate started filming Derek as the doctors could see improvements which she, for whatever reason, didn't see. So she filmed to compare how he was progressing. These were for her own use. I don't think he would have objected to this, but doubtless others will throw their opinions forth.
Later, when she was going to make the documentary which he was able to understand he consented, and she aired this in the documentary
Those are the details
But when did many on Gransnet bother to base their opinions on more than their own unfounded bias and not check the details (or in many cases watched the documentaries etc).
Derek Draper desperately wanted to improve and live. It was because of the publicity that the American expert knew about him and offered to help him.
The OP is written to suggest that consent was not given. It's wrong.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 17:40:39

Consent may not be continuing consent.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jan-24 17:47:55

I have 30 years experience of working with people who have difficulties expressing consent. My guess is I have more experience than you on this issue oldfrill. Your own bias on people expressing a different view shines through.
