Agree! I've worked in care and as a chef. Numerous times within both I had to take a deep breath for fear of saying or shouting something I might regret!

But I do stand by my thoughts that everyone, at some point in their lifetime, should work in retail. You really do see the worst of how humans can treat others.

It certainly is. I'll talk to anyone about most things and made some amazing friends whilst working there, but some days I just wanted to scream! 🤣

As someone who has just finished working in retail, you're just the kind of customer who got on our pip. Same old question to which we have no answer! It highlighted a topic which I found interesting from a linguisitic perspective but there does seem little point in keep asking the same question of sales assistants who are selling hundreds of different products.

One of them might be persuaded to give some feedback to head office but it’s something a customer could do for themselves which gives them a chance to explain exactly why something is bothering them.

I’m a firm believer in going to top if there is an issue that’s bothering me and I haven't been able to get anywhere via the usual customer services route. Sometimes it can result in surprising and positive results.

It needs renaming for sure. I personally have very pale skin and many standard light coloured foundations are too dark.
I have in the past tried to buy cosmetics for a very dark skinned friend, very few ranges have a good range of foundations etc for dark skin. And having to go to specialist shops or stalls to get greetings cards for those with darker skin, very few available, if the bride or groom are black, I don't want to send a card with white couples on, or new baby ones, having to get ones without an actual baby on as their baby is not going to be pink and blonde haired. An irritation for me ,but what about if most people you send cards to need people with darker skins.

One's own trials are not being advocated as an excuse, I'm just trying to explain that we never quite know what is going on in another's life and how it is affecting them. This may be reflected in their post.

I’m afraid that I can’t agree with those who feel that our own trials and tribulations are an excuse to be rude or unpleasant to others.
I get the impression that the OP is simply expressing surprise that a shade she assumed meant something along the lines of naked and therefore suitable for all might seem insensitive to those of different colour.
She doesn’t say the same to the same shop assistant every time as she has made her purchases in various stores. I assume that she is just reminded of those thoughts at time of purchase and so makes comment.

Some of you know I struggle with chronic ill health. I have felt particularly awful this week and on occasions have read a post and thought, Why are you moaning about something so trivial? However, I know that my perception or interpretation may be flawed and that I am particularly vinegar-y, because I have a mountain to climb to get through the day. Therefore, I try to refrain from commenting (it isn't easy) because I am a grumpy old woman. I don't always succeed and may come across as nippy. It does not mean I am a bad person.

Please don't be surprised, OP. Most of us on Gransnet - those who don't need to hector, condescend, patronise, show off, argue or bully to defeat anything they're feeling vinegar-y about, don't bother to respond. That's definitely something for which life is too damn short. Ignore the nonsense, you'll eventually see it's mostly the same people making the same pronouncements.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Has the OP upset someone on here in the past? Surely she is just telling us about a conversation she has with a shop assistant, probably in a light-hearted manner, regarding something she imagines the assistant might be interested in and find amusing. Not expecting for it to be investigated or reported back to HO, but purely as a bit of conversation.

Surely she doesn't need to be told to get a life - she may well have a very good one, which includes making conversation with sales assistants. It's surely just chit-chat.

Every time I buy my usual tinted moisturiser I always have the same conversation with the shop assistant. I buy Laura Mercier in the Nude shade. I point out that I am surprised that they haven’t changed the name of the shade because the shade is only suitable for white women whereas Nude could apply to any skin shade. They don’t really get my point; the last time I bought it in a Space NK shop I was assured that the product came in shades for all skin colours. The daftest response came in Selfridges where the assistant thought for a moment then said, “Well we do have it in Natural.” Am I being pedantic?

You are not being pedantic Maggierose. About 15 years ago my daughter and I were shocked when buying a well known body moisturiser that gave the skin a tanned glow. The colour was listed as ‘normal’ 🤷🏻‍♀️. To whom?

Yes Tin. If you're going to have what looks like fits over such a meaning/definition, I'd suggest that you never examine a paint sample 'leaflet', with maybe 15 versions of pink they've had to find names for, 17 blues, etc etc?! Car colour options too . . .

Stage make up (oil based sticks) used to be known by numbers I seem to remember.
The "greasepaint" Leichner ones.
