In the late 50's there wasn't any sunscreen to talk about, I don't remember it being a sunscreen at all, it just helped you tan so we made our own sunscreen out of olive oil and vinegar and put it in a bottle and we fried. The day after I could not straighten my arms they were so red and sore.
l remember the olive oil used as sun screen. It amazes me now as l think about it, how as we as kids we were never covered up but only told 'you'll burn if you stay in the sun too long' Then left to play on the beach all day burning raw
l remember going back to school where we would all show each other our peeling skin..it was like a badge of honor to have been burnt so bad..yuk..
My husband remembers he
did get covered up once with a large towel as they were lying on the beach but they forgot to cover the soles of his feet !!! His feet got so badly burned they had to pigback him back to the digs as he couldnt walk for days. It ruined his holiday and he still shudders thinking about the pain
