Think this was a comment was made on TV but for the life of me cannot remember who said this and/or why? Perhaps some GNs heard this and can confirm I'm not going pottygrin

I've reduced how often I flush to save water. It was even recommended by Martin Lewis to save money if you're metered. As I live alone I only flush when necessary but I flush every time outside home or if I have guests. We really need to reduce our water use not just because of flooding. Shorter showers, shallower baths and general reduction in usage helps our pockets as well as the environment.

WE are not on mains drainage
When it rains our system has to cope with the water like a river running of the road so we use the Australian rhyme. Have never flushed toilets in the night wherever we have lived so as not to wake sleeping children and adults. We are obsessed in this country I think you will find most yellow a sterile fluid

water companies pay £15bn to shareholders whilst our bills will increase whilst companies update the infrastructure so toilets etc. can be drained safely. thats why some people have been told not to flush the loo according to Tory MP Flick Drummond.

This is why privatisation costs more, the shareholders and managers expect whopping payouts, same in the NHS etc.

Privatisation does not get better frontline services, but it costs us more.

I go so many times during the night that I have half thought about a commode in my bedroom.
It is the thought of emptying it every morning that puts me off😉😰

This whole thread sounds like a discussion between flaky Generation X'ers. Doesn't anyone remember the days when some people still had outside toilets? My uncle and aunt in the country for a start. They gave us a big china potty under the bed. I would have no problem emptying a commode, not as awful as dirty nappies.

I've got a plant in the china gazunder.

Chestnut Thank you for the compliment "Generation X'ers" flaky?? hmmm scatty at times I admitsmile
Yes I do agree some people just waste water eg when brushing teeth..I always switch tap off and have a glass of water to rinse..
fluttERBY123 yes I was taught this mantra from an early age as Mother was strict about wasting water ..actually wasting anything really...
annsixty I was offered a commode for bedroom but like you the emptying of it, put me off...grin
Callistemon21 whats a gazunder...sounds painfulsmile

We get so much rain in N/E Scotland that would make things unbearable. It's not feasible here.

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Feb-24 15:00:11

Bea65 a gazunder is a potty, po, chamber pot. Went under the bed at night so you didn't have to trek down the garden to spend a penny in the middle of the night!
I may have spelt it wrong, it could be guzunder.

My Mother called it a po. Must have been her French heritage.

And what would happen if it rained on St Swithun's Day?

Drains aren't being kept clear of leaves and debris and I think that contributes to the flooding. Stands to reason really, doesn't it.

Juliet27 Sat 10-Feb-24 15:25:53

I think if I sat on a po on the floor I’d have trouble getting up again. If I put the po on a chair I’d have trouble getting onto it.
Thank goodness the loo’s not far.

Juliet27 Sat 10-Feb-24 15:27:42

Rivers and streams don’t seem to be dredged often now either albertina

They're not, partly here because shipping doesn't go up the river any longer and it was the shipping companies which paid to have the river dredged.

Silt is washed down river and settles, flood plains are built on and manure from intensive farming is washed into rivers, turning them into sewage dumps.

Hmmmm........sounds like an ideal way to block the household drains to be honest........just think of the build-up of loo paper not to mention other 'unmentionables' hmm

As soon as it stops raining, everyone flushes their loos and everything gets blocked up at once.

It was an MP who said it not a representative of a water company.

Callistemon, I was referring to the actual drains on peoples property. If none of us flush because its raining heavily there will surely be a build up of loo paper as well as other 'matter' in the toilet which could lead to a blockage because it might not go round the u-bend when we can flush.

Oh dear. This could be very simply solved. If there is a possibility of masses of toilet paper blocking the pipes then you could easily use a j-cloth cut up and then rinse it and dry it. More environmentally friendly anyway. These are really not difficult problems.

You can see I'm a 1950s child can't you. Mend and make do applies in all sorts of ways.

Is it any wonder the country is in such a state with such bonkers MPs.. deflection is the name of their game

downtoearth Sat 10-Feb-24 17:35:35

Its called a gazunder, because it gazunder the bed.

Bea65 Sat 10-Feb-24 17:52:48

The worst time to flush the loo is during a halftime break of a football game on tv, when half the nation jumps up to go potty at once!

Yes, I did get it.

Then if we all flushed when it stopped raining it might go down the loos and block the drains.

People put all kinds of things down loos which they shouldn't as well.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 10-Feb-24 18:48:32

All I can say is that with all the rain we have had lately, there would be a great many stinking houses, if toilets were not to be flushed during rainstorms!

Blimey, the joys of mains sewage systems. We're on a septic tank here and I grew up knowing what you don't put down drains. Never ceases to amaze me when you have mentions of fatbergs! Excess fat/grease was wiped off the plates/pans and any fatty liquids went in jars, then in black bin. Common sense we thought so why do folk think any thing other than loo paper and dodahs can be shoved down the pipes?

maddyone Sat 10-Feb-24 20:16:54

Tory MP Flick Drummond

Oh my goodness, that’s our MP. I don’t like her. She’s moving constituency next election (the boundaries are changing) and guess what? We’re getting Suella Braverman. She’ll probably get in too, it’s a staunch Conservative constituency.

Yes, shocking, isn't it!
I've heard of systems blocked with disposable nappies!
We wipe out pans with paper and it goes in the bin.

dodahs 🤔 I think I know what you mean!

Joseann Sun 11-Feb-24 07:28:41

We are into day 3 and counting of sewage overflowing here in our town. It happens frequently for whatever reason, and I am not voting for our MP because nothing ever gets done.
