What was your favourite comic as a child?

Bunty, Judy, then Jackie.

I got the Topper followed by the Bunty and the Judy. Bunty was my favourite and I loved the four Marys. I think I also got a comic called the Mandy. My big brother got the Hotspur and the Victor and I read them too. At Christmas we both got annuals and I recall the Look and Learn and Rupert as well as the Bunty, Judy, etc. We were all big readers in my family and Mum got the Family Circle and the Woman and Dad got the Greyhound owner. Also daily paper, local weekly paper and the Sunday papers. I have lovely memories of snuggling up in bed with my Mum while we enjoyed a rare lie in, Reading out comic and magazine. Like lots of Scottish families we always got the Sunday Post and my brother and I loved Oor Wulliw and the Broons. I loved Rupert and have quite a collection of Rupert annuals.

I was born in '57. I had Jack and Jill when I was very little. Then another comic but I can't remember what it was called. Which one was Moonie from the Moon in - I liked him. I remember in another comic there was Alona, a girl who lived all alone on an island. There was an older girl's one called Princess, and then it merged with Tina to be Princess Tina. My older sister has Petticoat and Honey and I graduated to them. Once I had a letter printed in Jackie and I was a 5 minute wonder at school. Our comics and mags were delivered early on a Saturday morning and I can remember rushing downstairs to get mine to bring back to read in bed.

I loved Ken Reid and Leo Baxendale and always had The Beano and The Dandy and when Wham started up I became obsessed with that and its sister comics, Smash and Pow. I remember my mum making me burn them all because of some forgotten infraction. I never really forgave her for that. I also collected Valiant and TV21 and had every copy of each from Number 1 with all the giveaways.She didn't make me burn those because they 'weren't as daft'. I told her years later she might as well have made me throw money on the fire but by that time it wasn't as raw.

When I was little I had Jack and Jill, but I don't remember Walter Hottle Bottle at all.

I do remember Harold Hare - I loved him, but not what comic he was in, or any other stories.

I was only allowed one comic, so when I wanted the new Princess when I was ten, I think, I got it instead of whatever I had been reading before.

For some reason my mother did not approve of Bunty or Beano, but on Sunday I was allowed to read The Broons and Oor Wullie.

I wasn't allowed any comics. My mum said they were a waste of money.

I began with Robin, aged about 5. It had a regular story about a Siamese cat with’a magic kink in her tail’. Weird! Then Swift, a glossy comic for slightly older children which was short lived, then Girl which I loved. Around 10 years ago a book called ‘Best of Girl’ was published with many favourites such as ‘Belle of the Ballet’ and Vicky who went to exotic places with her dad who was an archaeologist. My favourite strip was ‘Susan of St Brides’ about a student nurse. I used to borrow School Friend and Girls Crystal annuals from friends, and I also loved ‘The Silent Three’ with the monks’ cloaks in SF.

Mine was The Eagle, because I wanted to be a boy - or thought I did. I actually found the comic boring. Just as well there was no 'wokery' in those days or some do-gooder would have had me on the trans path! As I progressed into my teens I changed completely and became very girly - still loved climbing trees, though!

How times change though.Someone mentioned our comics of old as being good innocent fun and they were. I remember being in a newsagent last year with my ten year old Granddaughter and I said she could have a comic/magazine. It was horrible, when I looked at the suggested ages on them I couldn't believe there were debates about which boy to fancy and stuff about make up.This was for eleven year olds.I didn't want any of that for her more appropriate for 14 year olds. How times have changed.

Beano, Dandy, then when I was 10, Eagle! Not girly...Dan Dare was my hero.
Then later my parents wanted to stop Eagle and get Girl...I was so upset I finally got both. I liked the educational bits in Eagle too, always something new to find out.

And Radio Luxemburg - but that wasn't Dan Dare, was it: it was 'Jet Morgan, Pilot of the Future'!
I still read science fiction and even write some.

Bunty was delivered with the newspaper. I enjoined School Friend annual and Film Fun annual.

Bunty. My Daddy bought a copy home for me every Tuesday evening.

We weren't allowed comics as my Mum thought they were rubbish. However, I met Walter Hottle Bottle once at my cousin's and loved it. Nobody else I have ever met has heard of it and I didn't remember the name of the comic so it great to know I wasn't imagining it!

I loved Bunty too and could not wait for it to drop on the mat! Was not allowed to look at it before school though x

I liked the boys’ comics Wizard and Adventure best. They mostly had stories to read rather than cartoons!

I had a pen friend in Massachusetts and we swapped bundles of comics by post. I got Superman and various funnies and she got Girl and Schoolfriend. This was the late nineteen fifties.
