Strange habit of other Grandmother

No I haven't heard of that. Sounds very odd. I have heard of the placenta being dug into the roots of rose bushes. That's strange as well but at least it has been put to a good use.

Does she keep them in match boxes? Well if they are an uncommunicative lot you don't have to discuss it with her.

Does she keep them at home - that would be weird - or does she pay for them to be stored as Oops suggests. That is a very thoughtful thing to do.

It won't be huge pieces I think and it won't be grisly as I think she means the small stump of dried up cord that falls off the baby's belly button in the first couple of weeks of life. I think it's unusual for the grandmother to keep this - I think if it's kept it's usually the parents who choose to keep it. After all, it's just small and dry and tiny - finger-tip sized and pebble-like. It's the last physical remnant of the physical mother-child bond. I don't personally think it's grisly.

If she doesn't mean saving this cord-stump but instead is offering to freeze or otherwise medically save/store the cord or cord blood for baby's future use - what's not to like? It's an extremely valuable product and in future may become even more so.

Or... maybe you should Google "umbilical cord art" or "umbilical cord jewellery" or similar...

I've got my eldest son's. It had dropped out one evening and I felt bad about throwing it away. I popped it in a tiny jar adve it's still up they're there, 35 years later .

Well we're going to be seeing a lot of poos, fingernails, haircuts, scabs etc so not quite the same. Just the one little nub.

I didn't do it with the other 4. Which is possibly strange .

When my youngest son’s cord end dropped off at home a few days after coming home from hospital it fell on the floor and my Labrador got it before I did😳.
He seemed to enjoy it.

I gather that a lot of animals eat the placenta. A nutritious meal (for carnivores anyway) when the mother won’t immediately feel like going out hunting.

Isn't that a bit weird qhen you think about it - as someone said above - there will be lots more of those!

I think it's a bit weird and I've never heard of it before. In any event, I would have thought it more appropriate for the mother to keep it rather than the grandmother. What does your daughter think about it OP?

Are the other grandparents hippies or new age types?
